Especially after having to move away and experience what it's like to NOT have Vigo County Schools, you really appreciate what a good school system really is. Ohio Blvd is my favorite city street and the historic neighborhoods are fun to drive through. Even the city cemetery, Highland Lawn, is a beautiful place to drive, bike or walk. The police department and Sheriff's department are both dedicated to keeping Terre Haute safe. I have lived on the southern coast for many years, but I am moving back home as soon as I retire where I can enjoy four seasons again. Autumn and Halloween are magical there, sledding down Deming Park hill in the winter is special too. What's not to love? You have to live away to know what you're missing.

Walmart is the go to store, almost pizza is served and liquor and beer prices are just as expensive as gas in 2022! As you are traveling on Hwy 41 (the highway that drives through the entire city) you will notice that stop lights dominate the flow of traffic. It is a quiet town... most business close around 6pm. Almost fine dining closes shortly after sundown... this place reminds me of a place where you will get a good education, go to church and become a rock scientist! It seems like this place is where people come for school or retirement. We came here for a college graduation - now that this is over, and I am not in retirement yet... I guess it is time to go back to Atlanta GA

Cunningham Memorial Library - Special Collections and Archives. Great staff and super helpful!

There are lots of stacks and study spots, even a cafe in the entryway. I didn't spend nearly enough time here as a student, but I still appreciate this concrete behemoth! The card catalogue is gone but plenty of old school history remains in the stacks and the archives. My visit on this day was for historical research on student organizations and ISU presidential papers. The special collections team were most helpful in identifying relevant holdings and giving me access to review documents related to my topic. Advance notice is needed due to storage location of the archives. Legacy materials are held in a different location on campus, thus staff need time for document retrieval.

    Vigo County Public Library

Although my review is only a 2 in the Yelp world, I still believe a public library (regardless if…read moreit appears to be as antiquated and dated as the Vigo County Public Library) is a vital resource to a community. So my heart wants to give it higher stars, but it is what it is. If you go to libraries in general, as I do, this library is indeed just at best a 2. It is not a bad library, nor did I have a bad experience, it is just kind of an old crappy library. I would describe it as somewhere between nostalgic and antique. I say this based on having visited this library 20+ years ago (there might still be some of the same material floating around), it still has that feeling of a time capsule and times gone by. In a world where people can look at an atlas on line or simply buy the book used on Amazon, maybe libraries are simply loosing their footing in many peoples eyes. I hope this is not the fate of this institution, despite my 2 rating. While stopping in today to simply check it out, this library is indeed being used by people in the community in which it serves. I saw many at the public computers browsing the web, kids in the children area reading books and smiling attendants at the front desk. There was a little art installation set up down one corridor. I parked myself on a bench and read a bit while observing the happenings going on in the lobby of the library. Something about this space seems old, but old like a blanket your grandma had (which is good and bad at the same time....this is how I feel about this library). If you wanted to pop in to read the local paper, while catching some A/C in a welcoming spot & safe place at no cost, you could come here, and I suppose this is at the heart of a public library. This library is basic, needs a freshening up of some sort and serves this local population in a way that only a small time community library can. After writing this review, I think I might be a library snob and only just figured it out.

this is the worst library ive ever been to please make kids something fun to do. ts actually sucks…read moreim sueing

I digress..... This branch in Terre Haute gets 5 Stars in my Yelping mind for a few reasons: 1) There never seems to be a line at this location. Heck, I was there at 8:45AM this morning shooting the breeze with the postal clerk for 10 minutes before I even saw another customer walk in. Maybe now that I have dumped this spot into Yelp, I have jinxed myself and swarms of people will be flocking to this location, but I kind of think not. 2) They are open until 7PM during the week and 4PM on the weekend. Say what????? Please know that other US Post Offices across the US are never open this late, especially on a Saturday. 4PM on Saturdays? That is almost 6 full days of having a post office available to you...with funds being cut and losing money, post offices across the country are trimming back days and hours, not having great hours like this Terre Haute branch does. 3). Passport hours are posted as 9am-3:15pm Monday through Friday. Another unheard of at all US Post Offices across the US. (Passport services are not available on Saturdays). 4). Staff is always sincerely pretty nice. Customers to the post office universally can be not nice (short on time, always in a hurry, expectations too high). But I gotta tell yeah, as an official "Post Office Geek," the staff here are pretty nice, normal and sincerely there to help you. 5) They have a very organized and stocked array of merchandise from greeting cards, tapes, post wrapping papers and boxes. Compared to other US Post Office branches, this location always seems relatively organized, clean and stocked. So there is my input on this US Post Office location. Pick up a pen and write your dear mom or kind Aunt Netty a note and stop into the post office to check it out for yourself. Heck, buy the card for your beloved relative that does not even know what your handwriting looks like right there on site and then mail it in one fell swoop!

The Courthouse was designed by Samuel Hannaford of Cincinnati and the builder was Terra Haute Stone Company. The French Neo-Baroque structure was completed in 1888 at the cost of $434,000. The building's limestone was mined from the Stilesville quarries. The two ton bell that runs rings in the clock tower was purchased by the County namesake, Col. Francis Vigo, who assisted with early exploration and Revolutionary War efforts. The west entrance is open to the public. Entry requires security screening. The officers are considerate and helpful. I obtained a paper describing the Courthouse history. The Courthouse is large with multiple Superior Courtrooms. There is a central atrium with a grand painted dome at the top. The woodwork has been painted and marble floors replaced. Doors to offices and courtrooms were closed and access limited. The iron staircases were beautiful. On the ground floor are several modern murals depicting local history. Unfortunately, I did not encounter anyone that shared stories about the Courthouse. Courts were in session and people were busy. The Courthouse grounds are immaculate. A beautiful water feature artwork runs near the west entrance of the Courthouse. Benches and tables attract the lunchtime visitors. Several war memorials stand on the Courthouse grounds. There was no or limited parking around the courthouse square. Construction on the grounds limited access to the entire square. We found free street parking across the street from the Courthouse. Traffic is crazy fast, so you need to be careful at crosswalks.
