I had a wonderful time working on the Hatchery construction June 1966 through November 1967. For…read morethe Summer '67 salmon run we got to help Fish & Game operate the Hatchery because we knew which valves to open and close. Revisited once around 1990 with my son. Best commute I ever had, rented a house from the Bakers just the other side of the bridge - the old one of course. When I arrived in June '66 they had just finished all the mass grading. I was the last one off the project, finished up the Punch List and sold it to the State DWR in time for the Fall '67 salmon run. You would not believe the amount of pipe buried under that place, including the main 54" water line from the Thermalito Diversion Dam to the cooling tower west of the Hatchery Building that supplies the entire operation from the Hatchery Building Tanks, to the Rearing Ponds, and the Spawning Channel. Also picture the train that ran along the River bank to deliver cobbles from the gold dredge spoils south of Oroville to face off the Dam to protect it from erosion. That would have been handy when they were filling the crater in the Oroville Dam spillway recently. When we were surveying for construction staking and the train went by about every half hour, the instrument would shake so much we just had to stand by and re-level it afterward. Another fun incident was when we blew a 1/4 stick of dynamite in a 24" pipe we were jacking under the railroad. It ran into a boulder larger than 24" so that was the only way to get it through. It made a wonderfully loud, but mellow WHOOMPH! that echoed 4 or 5 times between the bluff on the west side of the Hatchery and the Town on the other side of the River. We of course gave a heads up to City Hall, Police & Fire, but I'm sure they answered a few phone calls from worried citizens. There might be a few folks around Town who still remember that. Because…read moreit there is no relief care of tree cover or in a structures to protect people from the blasting that UV rays, this place is only suitable for people who are not sensitive to heat and sun or once it is under 70 out. This is a pretty neat place and unique but I can't go there unless it's 70 or under out because of the absolutely searing sun. It destroys me and makes it so I can't have a good time. Otherwise it's Unique and as long as you go between now and early Oct there is something to see. Otherwise there's not much to see at all because it's not salmon season.

Went camping over the weekend at Loafer Creek. Stayed in site 94. They've cleared a lot of the…read moreunderbrush around that site so not nearly as much privacy as in previous years. The a holes in spot 132 decided to party until 4 o'clock in the morning and keep everybody up. Thanks for that. Lots of clean bathrooms, and a central shower area in the first loop provides reasonably priced showers with both hot and cold water. Apparently, there are no evening patrols in this particular campground. No enforcement of the reasonable time to be quiet. When we informed the people at the gate on the way out, they just looked at us blankly. I guess we'll have to contact the district office. Cell phone reception was mixed. People with AT&T did not seem to have good cell phone reception in most places. I have T-Mobile and got two bars in most places. My friend who had Verizon had full service and 5G If you get a chance, go to the waffle shop in town. That's literally the name of the restaurant. See Rachel at the counter for excellent service. Also in the area not to be missed is Jake's burgers.
