Waited 3 hour just for the lady to yell at us saying she can't help us that we need to schedule an appointment even though we completed all the forms online and just needed to drop off supporting documentation since the website said you have 45 days to drop off the documents they're requesting. If I could give them zero stars I would. Zero help and a waist of time.

The office has 17 customer service stalls, but usually, only about 4 are operational since COVID. The pace for being seen is relatively good. The customer service is good, and they all seem interested in assisting you in completing whatever you came in the office for. For me, the mood of a government office is pretty somber, and it is hard to get past the feeling that most people are seriously stressed out when they come through the door. I will say that the first person you see is a security guard who offers you a grin when you offer her one. She seems very pleasant and eager to help people. This office is so much more peaceful than the offices in Norfolk and Virginia Beach. The citizens demonstrated a definite sense of entitlement in the way that they complained about everything from the seats to their wait time. I like the atmosphere in Portsmouth much better, I know that's a first, but it's true. I knocked off a star because I am back today because the representative forgot to submit one document that held up my form. She did complete it and give me a copy with a date time stamp so everything is dated properly, so I still think her laughter and smile in a government office on a hot afternoon before Labor Day weekend was awesome.

The Outdoor Recreation program alone is a major asset. Between equipment rentals, camping gear, kayaks, paddleboards, grills, and seasonal offerings, it makes it possible to plan full weekends or spontaneous outings without needing to own everything yourself. It's practical, well-maintained, and priced in a way that actually supports families instead of excluding them. Commands can even check out items for zero cost for official events with a request submission. The gym and fitness facilities are equally solid. They're clean, well-equipped, and large enough to handle real demand without feeling chaotic. Whether you're lifting, doing cardio, attending group classes, or just trying to keep a routine while juggling family life, the facilities are reliable and accessible. It's one of those quality-of-life details that quietly makes a difference over time. What really ties it all together is how easy it is to see and access these offerings through MyNavyLife. Events, programs, seasonal activities, youth offerings, and special family events are all visible in one place, which makes planning far easier than hunting through multiple pages or flyers. There's a clear intention here to support not just service members, but entire families, and it shows in the range of amenities available. The MWR Library is honestly a very sweet location and has a single sailor Liberty Center for folks that are on their own and they have a lot of programs to make free time fun and not super expensive. Between Outdoor Rec, the gym, community events, and family-oriented spaces and places, JEBLCFS offers a level of support that is genuinely meaningful. It's not just "nice to have" we actively use these resources, and they've consistently made things better when we use them.

Aside from the ship, the outdoor sections are a little sparse but they do have live reenactors who are happy to explain a lot about what they do have, and that's really cool. The ship also has a couple people on board who are happy to explain both the historical and modern questions the kids have (like do you actually sail this boat... etc). The museum isn't extensive but it's enough to cover multiple topics and allows children to touch everything which is nice. It's short enough to not lose the attention of kids but does have some things that engage them. The town nearby is also super cute so all in all it's worth venturing out to Festival Park if you have some time on your hands.

Every stop along the way you are assigned tasks to get a stamp. Majority of the "actors" were amazing with this! There was one girl next to the black smith that refused to give my daughter the stamp because she didn't want to put the armor on, but the young man who showed us the black smithing called her over and gave her the stamp anyways. I believe that was the only off putting experience from the whole thing. Made my daughter not want to continue. I wish I had gotten her name to put an actual complaint in, not all kids will want to wear the armor for various reasons. We listened and watched each demonstration and I think that's enough. The prizes were actually nice, they weren't just some sticker it was either a bookmark or a magnet. Both good quality. I learned a lot, our favorite part was the blacksmith, he explained so much to us and even gave my daughter the nail he made. Both actors on the ship were nice, the young man under the ship really stayed in character and answered all questions as if he was one of the actual crew. Super cool experience.

The library is minutes from the mall minutes from a gas station minutes from a gym this is just perfect in my opinion. Very seldom do I use any other services other than the desk area to do independent work. Even though I do have a library membership in case I do decide to check out anything I just love being able to come and work in a neutral environment it's not super quiet in here especially if mothers or Guardians are with children but still it's nothing that's unbearable. The staff is super friendly always helpful. Every time I come in I'm greeted with a smile. The restrooms are always tidy! Upstairs and downstairs areas and handicap accessible. There are Stadium size rooms as well just an efficient building and location that holds a lot of events from graduations to seminars. But if you haven't been here definitely check them out. This past year, I've witnessed some graduates come and take their senior photos and evidently that's something that's allowed I've never seen anyone question them... I Love all the natural light that comes in as well petfect for pictures on a bright day. Have fun and enjoy life :)

Recently my wife and I attended an annual genealogy event dubbed "Moonlight Madness". It has been on hold the last three years with the pandemic. A sign up was required and I did not see it advertised. I accidentally ran across it. Unfortunately the event was poorly attended. However, the program was informative for a beginner and the staff was strong. The librarians are experts in the field of genealogy research. After the formal program which was held after library hours we had time to do our own research on provided computers with high speed internet. Staff was available to assist with specific genealogy databases. We were allowed free of charge to receive print offs. Hopefully next year when the event is sure to continue its advertised better for improved attendance. You do not need a program to begin your research into family history. The databases are free to use with a library card. As well there is assistance if needed. The City of Virginia Beach has wonderful resources for its residents at its libraries throughout the town. Look on their website for programing that your family may be interested in. Consider using VB Libraries if you do not already.
