I called the Social Axe at 5pm on a Friday to see if they had any walk-in availability. They told, "yes" and I headed right over. It was empty when I showed up at 5:15pm, but was full and bumpin when I left at 6:20pm. Came just to practice (and I needed to stall some time). $15 for 1 hour and I had my own lane! Not bad at all. The place I have at home you need to rent the lane at like $150 an hour and you divide it up with whoever you bring or randomly get partnered with. Service was very friendly. Host/worker showe me a couple of techniques and gave some light coaching (as I asked for her opinion). I didn't get her name, but she was great. Very friendly, helpful, and supportive. We had a party of 6 so if we wanted a reservation, we only had the option of booking for two hours with a host. We did that. And actually they were very flexible with us when our dinner plans were running late..so that was nice of them. It's a nice facility, the decor is great, the set up is great, they sell beer! All great! BUUUT.... Here's the reason I'm not giving it 5 stars... We did not have a pleasant experience with our "host" she was rude, irritable, short and very obviously treated the women differently than the men. Making snarky comments to one of our friends that kept forgetting to retrieve her ax. NOT NECESSARY. To be honest, the host should be there to provide guidance, suggest games, keep score and maintain safety. But not to make people feel uncomfortable or unwelcome. LEAVE YOUR ATTITUDE AT HOME. I've been ax throwing before (near sugarhouse) with a host and they were fun, playful and nice! Completely different experience. So family is in town and we were looking to do something fun and I believe we found it. This place is awesome the scenery, environment and set up is perfect. Started out with a kool entrance a huge wooden chair perfect to take IG and Yelp pics on for sure. Immediately most locations have computers to sign waivers forms no this place has a cool QR code ya scan with your smartphone which everyone has in today's society to quickly fee out your form. They also have small convenient little hand sanitizers to take with you how awesome it that? We were immediately greeted by the new employee Bailey which was super awesome, helpful, friendly and very charismatic employee. Luckily for us we called in advance to schedule a party of four however it was empty considering it was a Tuesday however for the weekend or busy times strongly recommended calling ahead. Bailey showed us the basics for the technique to throw the actual axe which was a must considering we were all new to this. Overall the place is awesome. If your a drinker they have tons of beer options and pool tables and arcade games very nice place. First time axe throwing. Was in town for work and went with family on the first night. Had so much fun I brought the coworkers back on day two! The staff was great. They took the time to teach you how to do this safely and provided pointers on how to hit the target. All in was a nice night out to bond, drink and throw weapons. Highly recommended. read more

So you need a corporate team build and you're tired of the same old sheez. Who isn't? It's enough to make you want to not build anything, particularly with anyone on your team. Enter "Social Axe Throwing." It's new. It's different. Odds are nobody on your staff has done it before. My team was a pretty good litmus of all ages, sizes, recreational abilities.... and they ALL had a blast. Think of darts. But with axes. It was awesome. Here's the skinny: We made a reservation for a mid-day session. It was nice because we had the place to ourselves. You have a facilitator that a.) teaches you how to not kill yourself doing this b.) teaches you how to properly handle said axe and c.) runs the games and contests. He/she is with you the whole time and makes sure your group has a blast. Remember to tip them. The event time was for 2 hours which upon booking I thought was a short window. Turns out you can throw a lot of axes in two hours and play a lot of games. We played several games and had a mini tournament where you can smack talk and hopefully knock out all of the members on your team and earn an trophy (they have legit axe trophies there for sale as well.) You can buy drinks and small snacks there. For private parties you can even have adult beverages. There is open play and leagues as well. Minimum age for wood chopping is 15 so leave the littles at home. read more

My husband, 18 year old son and I spent an hour at Social Axe this evening. We made a reservation ahead of time. We got there and needed to fill out a waiver. Then, they got us to our lane and taught us how to throw. They take the time to watch a few of each of your throws. After a short while the assistant manager came by to give us some pointers. Intrigued, Dan and Roseanne look at the envelope, Rosie says, "Well, they say there's a card for everything" and open it. That's how I feel about axe-throwing ... I guess there's an activity for everyone. And yes, indeed, Yelp has a category for Axe-Throwing under "Active Life" ... wonders never cease. I see why after giving it a whirl. My shoulders are killing me the day after. You really have to put some oomph into and axe-throw. And, when you totally miss the target, the embarrassing clanks permeate throughout the place. Hitting the mark isn't too hard, I'd say you're throwing from about 8-10 feet away. It's using proper form to get the sharp end in and the strength to get it the 5 ... the bullseye of the target. And, better yet, they have "coaches" who will fill you in on proper form. Don't worry, the berths are wide and the seating is a safe distance away. Shoes are required, so hippies need to invest in some Vans. Social Axe Throwing has set up shop in SLC and Ogden. Ogden is a little easier when it comes to walk-ins (less wait time, at least in my experience). And better news: They've got their beer license now, so don't forget to wear your hard hat! ;) Cost is $15 per person, per hour. Sadly, you can't bring your own axe. But, then again, you probably don't want to be moseying down the street with an axe. Most important: it's fun. Feeling like getting medieval on your own ass? How about throwing an axe into a wooden wall?....over and over again. We saw the signage for this place on a previous visit to the area, then asked several locals (who gave the thumbs-up). And they turned out to be right - My family spent an hour here on a whim, and it ended up being one of the highlights of our short trip. It was safer than it sounded. Each party was assigned a "lane" that is separated by other lanes using metal fencing. We were given instructions on technique and safety before we started throwing (including "if your axe bounces, run away," said with a wink) but we never had an issue regarding misses getting anywhere near anyone. Only one person throws at a time, and non-throwers stand/sit behind a barrier. As for throwing, it took me a while to get the technique down, but once I got it, I was in the zone...and ended up barely winning our 3-person match, which was not unlike a game of darts (the walls are marked with numbered target regions). They even served beer here, which was less crazy as it sounds - All beers were below 5% abv and the limit was three/person. I had two IPAs and barely had a buzz going. Bonus points for having free video games on the side for those waiting for lanes. They even had some ancient stuff like Galaga and Asteroids in the mix (ah...memories). In the end, we paid $12/person for our hour. A steal for such a fun time. I hope to be back someday. read more

My cute family and friends gave me a surprise party here. It was so so so so fun! They booked it as a party and so we had two throwing lanes with a private "booth" for food and enjoying each other. Brayden, a staff member, stayed with us for the whole two hours running games and helping those of us who were not natural axe throwers. The owner was wonderful and checked on us several times. The entire experience was fabulous! They also allowed us to bring I outside food which was nice because then we could have a cake and some homemade treats. That didn't stop us from ordering from them though, the chicken wings and pizza were better than I expected. Overall, this is a great place to come and I would gladly have a party here again. I love this new Ogden location! It's bigger and more open than the last one. The coaches are extremely nice and are ready to instruct anyone that needs help. If there happens to be a wait for an open lane, there is a ton to do. You can play a game of pool or try your hand at Killer Queen or any of the other arcade games there. They have snacks and drinks (wooo beer). We went as a walk-in of two people this time, but going in a group is a ball. If you've never been axe throwing before, this is the place to start. We had lots of fun. Staff was great. Best games were lightning and the tournament bracket. The left to right numbers with the green dot at the end wasn't that fun. Heres the only reason why it didn't get 5 stars. I booked online for a main event for 7 people on Saturday at 6. We ended up having a total of 14 people. They still had all of us on only 2 boards. The 2 boards next to us were empty. We thought maybe they had reservations for another group. At 7:20 2 people walked in and they gave them the 2 boards. Lets do some math. 14 people times $30 per person is a total of $420 plus tip for 2 hours. The 2 guys that walked in to play for $15 per hour for 2 people so a total of $30. They each got their own board! We paid over 10x what they paid and got squeeze into 2 boards. It just didn't seem right. We felt ripped off. So the only suggestion I have is they should have given us all 4 boards since we had so many people. If they were saving it for another reservation, we would have understood but it was just saved for potential walk ins....seems a bit greedy to me. read more

Axe throwing is my new favorite group activity. Everyone can do it! The coaches are fun and know how to make you have a good time with all the games they play with axe throwing. Pros: -it's definitely a lot of fun -staff spends time teaching you how to throw different ways -lots of fun games played as a group Cons: -bad managing -we "reserved" our spot ahead of time. Says you need at least 6 players, we ended up having about 14. They stuck all of us on 2 boards. There were 2 boards right next to us completely empty for almost about and hour and a half. 2 guys came in and had their own boards. Basically in a matter of 30 minutes, those 2 guys probably threw more axe's than I did the whole 2 hours I was there. -you basically get punished for reserving a time and bringing more business for the company, if we had came in as 2 separate groups of 7, we would have gotten more playing time. read more

Social Axe is sooo much fun & totally worth the price! It's good for groups, couples, and individual stress-relief too! I've been to both the locations multiple times (this one and the one that opened up in SLC) and neither have ever disappointed! I've gone individually, with my partner, with friends, as a group with my coworkers for a work party, as a group with my sorority and as a group with the organization And She's Dope Too and every time has been a fun, awesome experience! It's super safe, the instructors are knowledgeable and help you easily pick up the right form to successfully land some throws, and you can make it competitive or just play for fun!
