I like it here, thus far.
PROS
- The pt load is very manageable. The CNAs arent running around like headless chickens.
- The residents are happy and cared for.
- The facility is clean.
- They have a desk nurse/unit clerk. OMG.
- Univ Village tends to run shop like Fairway Oaks, if you're familiar. Fairway is very regimented and by-the-book. Best SNF at which I've ever worked.
- The building is older but very nice. The rooms are huge! The bottom floor is skilled and the top floors are assisted living. I only work skilled, but I've seen the ALF wing. Very nice.
CONS
- Low pay. I mean, low. I don't pull shift here often because of this. Yes, I "care". I run all over the place, bending and lifting and staying late to finish work for the residents BC i care. I just won't do it for pennies. Sorry.
BTW,
I can tell you what the s***ty facilities with crappy staff are in this town because I pull shift at various facilities. Fellow nurses (and aides) don't review facilities much. I understand the why of it all, but I just don't care anymore. They can blacklist me. I don't depend on these jackholes for my bread and butter, anymore.
University Village is bad?
No, EXCEL REHAB is. Hands down. This place cannot keep staff for a reason.
-- Unsafe pt/nurse ratios! Poor staffing! Why does this matter? If the nurses and aides are slammed. They cannot properly care for everyone.
-- Facility isnt wellstocked. No wafers, the right syringes, etc... Why is this a problem? One of my ppl had a 32 B/S. No glucagon anywhere in the facility, not even the edkit. I had to scramble and give the pt ice cream to prevent a hospital visit. This was the 2nd time within a week that something like that happened. The first time, the pt was sent out (to the hospital) because the nurse was new and, on top of not having access to the resources she needed, the experienced nurse would NOT help her! They were around to beat her up about it, though.
-- Poisonous floor culture. Rude and unfriendly nurses. Reread the last sentence of the comment above this one. Nuff said. Id never seen such a clear example of 'nurses eating their young' until I came here. The aides are okay. Most of the nurses on the floor, however, are just varying pieces of work. The skilled wing, especially. Why does this matter? Nursing is a team effort. If we can't work together, pt care suffers.
-- Odd company culture. Management and the CEO (i think) came to the floor days later and via some jedi mind self trickery basically denied the 'lack of resource' claims. Lol. There was no glucagon or glucatrol in the building but, according to them, we were just making things up. Lol. Interestingly enough, that shift, we were short with aides (7t3). Had 2 new CNA staffers who were doing their best. We, the nurses, cldnt help bc the med pass was too heavy. The CEO and management got all bent out shape about trays in an empty room (door was closed) and reamed out the nurse. Breakfast was late. The aides fed ppl and shoved the trays in the empty room bc few had been changed and the call lights were going off like crazy. They had more important things to take care of.
The aides were trying to prioritize pt care. What's most important when youre already behind schedule and new? Screwing around with breakfast trays or ensuring that residents are showered/shaved and their needs tended to?
"Well, why isn't this done -'?" Uh, look around. Do you see anyone sitting down? Instead of standing around asking stupid questions, "the management team" could have grabbed a cart, loaded the trays and taken them back to the dining hall themselves. SMH
Univ Village is nowhere on the crappy facility list. It is not perfect, but it is not like the other reviewer states. How many nursing homes have you seen with a desk nurse?! LOL So, I call bull on Katie's review and have to question not only whether she has worked in the facility but if she is even a hands-on hlthcare professional, ie, Nurse or CNA. Katie sounds like a "visitor", herself. To be honest.
In the first place, visitors visit often and weekends are generally the most slack shifts. Everyone knows that. Everyone also know that weekday mornings (7t3) is usually the most "together" because management, STATE, providers, company owners, AND family members are in the house. I have never seen aides and nurses at this facility refuse to help out a teammate. That's a lie.
