I was most impressed by how well their staff takes care of this gym which in return the clients do so as well. There is nothing out of order. All the weights are racked. In the week I was visiting, I saw the staff wipe down with polish the lockers, sweeping and mopping the floors, wiping down all equipment, taking out trash, refilling the cleaning wipes, and cleaning the bathrooms. There are two main areas, the weights and cardio machines on one side. There is also a stretching area in the middle and then the powerlifters and crossfit style area on the other side. I went to a class "12 days of Christmas" and it kicked my butt. The instructor was awesome and the class was packed. There are two large fitness rooms upstairs for classes such as spinning and even kickboxing. The ladies locker room is impeccable. I even used their showers one day. They even have a dressing room. Highly recommend! This will be our go to gym when visiting the area.

The quality of the facilities, not quite as high. There are things to like here. Depending on what you do at the gym, they have a large amount of cardio equipment, a pool, and a workable free weights section. They have round weights, which I'm always a fan of. The gym and locker rooms are both generally pretty clean. For the most part, equipment is in good shape. One big issue I have here is the lack of collars for the barbells. I don't know if they're hiding or completely missing, but despite having about 10 barbell-based pieces of equipment, I could only find two sets of collars. This poses a huge safety risk. I don't know that this is a good thing, but I was always able to get one of those sets of collars....because the other gym patrons just didn't use them. That's not good. Also, the barbells are very rusty, making it harder to get weights/collars on and off than should be. Its a good gym for the money, and I don't mind going here when I'm in town - but there's definitely room for improvement.

Two years ago I paid by check(huge mistake) last year, a few weeks before my renewal date I asked for a price for the next year. I dropped off payment a few days before that date, and thought everything was good. On my renewal date I see an addition charge on my account from golds. They actually used the routing # off my check and charged me without approval. When I approached the manager to ask about this, he saId it was apart of my yearly fee ( even though I never agreed or gave approval). I let it go, and continued to use the gym. Today, a year later, the same exact thing has happened! DO NOT GIVE THEM ANY OF YOUR ACCOUNT INFO!!

That said, when my sister came to visit our family from Florida, she took me to the local Reading PA Anytime Fitness gym and needless to say, I was very very impressed. Not only were the facilities top-notch, the manager Troy was extremely gracious and helpful in helping me set up a short term membership and a tour of the facilities. Now when I visit my family in the Readin PA area, not only do I have awesome food to look forward to, I also have this awesome gym to look forward to and burn off some of my moms delicious cooking. I switched to Retro from BZ, having also attended Gold's, LA Fitness, and a few smaller gyms in Berks County in the past (including the colleges' fitness spots). The facility is better all around: it's cleaner, more up-to-date, has better ventilation, better equipment, and better showers/locker rooms. If I'm being picky, the only changes I would make would be to add an additional mirror in the Group X room and raise the placement of toilet paper dispensers in the bathrooms (they're very low if you're tall). But really, that's all I've got by way of constructive criticism! Staff is friendly and they remember your name. (And if you're reading this, Retro staff: Claire is a pseudonym.) To be particular: Janet is an awesome group fitness director and the classes reflect that. I also love that I can sign up for classes online: it guarantees me a spot in class and helps me feel that I cannot skip the gym because I treat it like a scheduled appointment not to be missed. Retro also has a smoothie bar, tanning, and better hours than most of the other gyms in the area. Biggest plus: Retro is far more affordable than just about any other facility. It's friendly to your wallet. My husband and I are both very happy with our decision to switch to Retro.
