Snälltåget is a fun(ish) night train experience. We took the night train journey from Berlin to Malmö via a ferry between Sassnitz and Trelloborg aboard the Stena Line. They did a good job keeping us informed of schedule changes caused by track work prior to boarding.
Their coaches are greatly aged and not well maintained, they were tidy but not clean. Our coach had no working WC on either end and the joined coaches only had one working WC each. The lead coach had no working power. There are no power outlets in the coaches which caused some mock consternation and apoplexy in my kids, "you mean we actually have to *talk* to one another"? There is no food option on-board the train, I highly recommend grabbing food before boarding unless you want to wait until ferry embarkation at approx. 22:30 to eat. There was an electrical problem on-board which prevented the heat from working until the coaches pulled onto the ferry - the outdoor temperature was 1° C, the coach temperature felt like 4-5°. We would have been fine had we been camping but for train riding, not so much and even bundled up it was chilly. In general, it was an okay experience but not exceptional. read more
