We took three SJ trains in the summer of 2025: * One arrived at the station, was delayed several times due to electrical problems, and eventually cancelled. * One (a fancy high-speed X 2000 train) got halfway to our destination, broke down due to electrical problems, and we had to trasfer to a second train that was pretty full. Many of us had to stand for hours until a seat freed up. * The only train that basically did its job had no air conditioning in 25+ degree weather (80+ F) and was a sweltering trip from hell. Trains in Denmark and Norway were great, but I will never take a long-haul SJ train ever again. I'd rather drive or fly, even if it's twice the cost. SJ is that bad. Oh, and even if your trip is cancelled or delayed to where you should recieve compensation, the default answer is "no" when you fill out the claim form. I advise using a credit card so you can dispute the charges when SJ screws up.

You only have to bring an id woth you on the train and they usually only ask for your name, or not at all! I have sleept through many trips. With cheaper, faster and more comfy trains than SJ trains, it not that hard to choose. You also have the ability to upgrade to a Plus ticket which always includes a free seat next to you, a meal, tea/coffee served to your seat. It might not be the fastest (although you don't have to travel from the airport) but I will continue to enjoy the fantastic service that is MTR Express!

Questions submitted by email are answered, in English, in about six hours. I wish bus maps were available at the visitor center for more than tourist sites. But they respond quickly to getting to places and costs outside of the city. The system itself is clean with understandable maps in the stations. Your weekly pass seems to be good for several hours after the expiration date you see when you tag your card. So you will have a full seven day pass, at least until 4:30pm. There are many places to get your pass. We got ours at the airport but last trip got it at the Pressbyrian which is a common convenience store here. There is a small fee for the card. Just save your card for the next trip.

(https://www.yelp.co.uk/biz/stockholms-tunnelbana-stockholm) Unlike most metro stations it is fully accessible - other than certain stations with lift problems (lifts seem to go down all the time with no notice upon leaving a train or on the platform with some metro stations being hard to navigate and even staff unaware that a lift has been down for weeks and possibly even month. SL, however, do have an accessibility guarantee but with only a Swedish number (expensive to call for foreign tourists) and having to plan in advance - again this can be difficult especially when Underground, I do feel this could be better. That being said, the mobile signal while using the underground network was so much better than others - especially compared to the London Underground which is reliant on Virgin Media wifi at only a few stops. Transport is pretty good value for money if you buy a pass depending on the length of your stay which could be 24/48/72 hours - if you're a resident or staying longer they do have an SL card which is similar to an Oyster but much worse - you have to pay to get one and then load that card as some transport systems including trams don't have cash facilities - I'd much prefer a system similar to London or Manchester where an Oyster is free (as long as you put money on it) or you can use any contactless card to claim on (and you're still capped paying the cheaper fare) as the system right now is pretty confusing. My 72-hour card cost 260 SEK which as it included transport all throughout Stockholm County including Taby and Solna on commuter rail, I feel it was value for money as it ended up costing the same as I would have paid for the same period, travelling in Zones 1 and 2 in London (£7 a day) SL do run many other services too including tram, buses and commuter rail. The metro stations are probably the nicer of the lot, with many key stations having some beautiful art - but others do seem quite dirty with a huge stench of urine and litter which remains unaddressed. Transport in Stockholm is generally pretty good and SL can be proud of that, with also most trains being level access for disabled people - however, when things go wrong, they seem to go very wrong and with no public email address, making it hard for non-swedes to get in touch with them, the confusing and hard layout of many stations they operate across all networks and the lifts going down more than Mo Salah in the box when he played for Liverpool before VAR was implemented, it does let it down. 3* - Many drawbacks which can make what is generally a very good transport system, like hell.

Also if you're flying from Terminal 5, you save some time from walking to the transit hub at Terminal 4. Essentially as soon as you exit Terminal 5 baggage claim, you walk directly to where it says Arlanda Express, and take the lift up and you're on your way to Central Station. If you're traveling with multiple people, make sure you buy your tickets together because they offer a multi passenger discount. I flew by myself so I didn't get to utilize this discount... next time! There's no assigned seating (it's open seating!), so just hop on and find a seat (and a place for your bags). It saves time from having to find a specific train car or assigned seat. At Central Station, Arlanda Express operates from Spår 1 & 2. There's quite a bit of gravel outside the station, so I recommend walking inside the station vs dragging it through the gravel outside. Time and distance is the same. I flew SAS, so when I returned to Arlanda, I took the escalators up to the side that said Departures. Follow the signs up, and you'll reach the check-in counter directly in front of the escalators for SAS. Fast Track are to the right of the escalator, for those who don't have any bags. Pretty convenient if I might say! All in all, it took me about 40-45 minutes to complete my journey from Central Station to the SAS check-in counters & Fast Track. So while I paid an arm and a leg for Arlanda Express, it was very convenient since I didn't have to walk too much to get to/from Stockholm. It was nice that at T5, it literally drops you off right at the SAS check in area. Given the high price point, I give it a solid 3.5 stars rounded down to 3 stars. If the price can be cheaper, I'd definitely give it a higher rating.

Arlanda Express is quick to respond to your questions. This is the only way to go if you are jetlagged because of delayed and cancelled flights. There are 3 stops. Two at the airport and one at Central Station. Your other choice, the commuter train, can and yesterday was, packed like sardines. We couldn't even make it out the door and had to go to the next step and circle back. We are very familiar with Stockholm but you will find, for us non Swedish speakers, that the commuter train announcements and stations are worded slightly different than expected. Plus you have to walk to get it and walk and wait at the train station whereas Arlanda Express is right there AT the airport. It was COLD yesterday. On the return trip, I am spending the extra money for a more predictable trip. 18 minutes from Central Station. There are discounts for 2 or more paying normal price. Cheaper than a cab or ride share. And cheaper than an overnight stay at an airport hotel. But keep in mind that it only goes to Stockholm Central. That is fine if you are staying nearby. But even if you arent, Central Station has all the very good subway lines to transfer to. We were going to Sodermalm and I thought my initial commuter train was smart because once I got on it, it would take me to the part of town that I was staying, cheaper. At 24 hours awake, I have now learned to spend the extra few bucks on the faster less confusing option.

T-Centralen where "T" is an abreviation for "tunnelbana" that is the Swedish word for underground. Lots of escalators and many lifts. This is the only station where all of the subway lines meet and is therefore the busiest station in the Swedish network with an underground underpass to the Stockholm Central Station (for national and regional trains) where we caught the Arlanda Express to the airport. Both of the blue lines (Lines 10 and 11), both of the red lines (Lines 13 and 14) and all three of the green lines (Lines 17, 18 and 19). Thankfully, there's a great color map that shows what's what and where. Many food and shopping opportunities. Luggage storage areas. Several places to sit and rest. Just note things are a bit overpriced, but that's kind of expected in a station like this. One thing that really stood out to me was how friendly and helpful people are. If you ask for help, they genuinely go out of their way, which made navigating way less stressful. Overall, it's pretty easy to find your way, but it's so big that you can def get a little lost. It also has direct access to the subway, which is super convenient. One tip: if you buy the 18-minute ticket to the airport, double check exactly what you're being sold and make sure you keep your copy. The tours & ticket booth (near McDonald's) sold us the wrong ticket and we weren't able to use it nor get refunded, which was really disappointing.
