We rented our ski/snowboard gear from here through an aggregator (Banff Adventures) and we were able to pick up the day before we were skiiing (after 4pm I believe). So that was nice that we didn't have to worry about it the morning of. They actually ended up delivering it to our hotel free of charge! We came into the shop, which is conveniently located in downtown and we were the only ones in there. So getting fit was easy and a friendly experience. They were super patient with my kids and we ended up adding helmets for me and my wife. I would highly recommend this company as it was great service at a low price. read more

Came here as a recommendation from our server to rent bear spray to take with us for our hike to the Agnes tea house in Lake Louise. For a day rental, it was $12 CAD. They make you fill out paperwork and give you a demonstration on how to use the canister. They also have other outdoor gear and bike rentals. The staff here are professional. Super helpful team here who really know their gear, as well as the local conditions. I had booked 5 sets of ice cleats and 5 sets of poles for what is usually a fairly chill hike up Sulphur Mountain. When I got there the guys working let me know just how icy the hike was after a few days of temperatures hovering around zero during the day, then freezing up shiny and hard at night. They insisted everyone on the hike would need gear, and though I hesitated thinking maybe I was just being pressured to spend money, I took their advice and booked 20 sets of ice cleats... and boy were they right. I'm so thankful to them. Ascending 2000 feet in 5.5km on paths that were thick, slick ice almost all the way to the top in blowing snow would have been impossible without the footwear from Snow Tips. Some of my crew had a hard time, but every single person successfully completed the hike - even people who had never seen snow before, or never been on a hike! Every person got that sense of triumph and achievement, and that is entirely thanks to Snow Tips. So go say Hi! when you're in Banff and thinking about what kinds of outdoor adventures you might want to get up to! We called here a bunch of times before stopping in to rent - very helpful over the phone and in person. Devin was especially helpful with gearing our family up. We took advantage of a break during our rental days and had to adjust boot rentals - all possible and easy. Friendly, helpful staff... they get busy. We need a bunch of bicycles of all sizes, but especially needed trailers and other things for young kids. We found this place on the internet and arrived at 8am on a Tuesday morning. The place was empty but we were greeted by 2 friendly people. They had everything that we needed. We ended up getting 6 adult bikes, 4 kids bikes, 1 tandem, and 2 trailers. Helmets were included. All of the bikes were well maintained. Trailers worked well. They are a short distant to multiple trails. Lots of fun was had. The store is a short walk from public parking. Only issue we had was they initially rang up some of the bikes for 1.5 hrs and others for 2hrs. when we rented them all at the same time. We pointed this out and it was quickly fixed. So be sure to check your receipt. read more

Eddy & Jim at Bactrax saved my big trip! After renting from MEC, I realized that they forgot to give me a pair of skins to go with my backcountry skis. I was ready to board our helicopter for a big trip I was looking forward to for ages where I would absolutely need those skins and I was freaking out when all other rental places either didn't carry backcountry skis or refused to rent only the skins (understandably). Eddy and Jim at Bactrax were my last hope, and thankfully they made an exception for my situation and allowed me to get the skins and continue on my trip. I always rented from Bactrax, but after this experience I know I'll be back many more times. They honestly have the best prices, more gear available, and excellent service out of every rental place in Banff I've interacted with. Definitely a "local's secret"! Thanks so much guys! read more

On a trip to Banff in January, I found out that this store existed and they provided me with days' worth of recreation. I rented hockey sticks and cross country skis there, both for under ten bucks per day. The staff was very friendly and helpful. They showed me how to put on the skis and taught me how to use them and several of them were guys I had played hockey with in the park the night before. read more

Nice place to rent bikes. We got four mountain bikes, but they also have road bikes and serious mountain bikes. Prices were good, especially if you rent for multiple hours. And there are a lot of fun rides nearby; a great family activity. We kept the bikes for four hours and saw lots of interesting stuff; we'd have kept them longer if we had the energy. I had a very negative experience here. We came to rent fishing rods and tackle. We rented 3 rods and reels. I should have looked them over after they picked them out and gave them to us, but I assumed they knew what they were doing. This was NOT the case. Out of the three rods and reels, only 1/3 was BARELY FUNCTIONAL. One rod was VERY under spooled, with maybe only 25 yards of line left on the rod. The reel was a total piece of junk on that one as well. The second rod had a BAITCASTING rod with a SPINCASTING reel. Those two pieces of equipment are 100% incompatible!! Upon return, I kindly tried to explain to an employee why those two pieces of equipment don't work together. A very RUDE shaggy haired man in a beanie scoffed at my saying "these are just rental poles, they're only meant to give you a chance to have a go." He later told me "I could cast that!" I could tell this guy had never fished in his life, and had no place picking out rods and reels or working with customers. Being a fisherman, I was disgusted with the service and attitude upon explanation. They did not even offer to refund me when I explained why the equipment was faulty. I would NEVER would recommend this place to anyone. Save yourself the hassle and rude employees and go somewhere else!! read more

My friend and I wanted to rent snowshoes for a trail near Banff/Kananaskis Country. We were there on a Sunday evening, the last evening of the Banff film festival. Goodle said it was open until 8. We stopped there around 6:30, the lights were on, staff was in the store, but waived us off that they were closed. We thought it was odd, but returned promptly at 8am (there are no hours on their website, so this is google information). They were not open, yet their neon open sign was on. We got annoyed and just researched somewhere in Canmore to get snowshoes. Everywhere we went in Canmore was drastically more helpful and friendly than Banff. read more

This was the only place in Banff that had chariots to put a small child in for rent so we basically had to go with them. While the staff was "fine" the chariot was filthy inside which was pretty unsettling to put my 14 month old in. We rented 6 bikes and the chariot. My husband's bike which they attached the chariot to had very little air and his chain came off during our bike ride twice. My bike's seat was loose and we had to stop several times to fix it. When we brought the bikes back nobody asked us how the ride went or if there were any issues they just asked us repeatedly to bring the bikes indoors so they could "stop the clock" as if they were charging us for every minute we stood outside the door of the shop with the bikes. read more

Reading reviews, it appears that this shop does not like to service customers during normal operating hours. I called 10 minutes before closing and was 1 minute away from the shop to rent skis for my son. All I got was, "Are you serious, Dude, you can come in the morning at 7 when we open". "Dude" was enough to turn me to another store where we were promptly taken care of and the staff stayed after closing. That is customer service and I had no problem buying a few extra things I needed. Oh did I mention that the other shop gave us a discount too! I've rented bikes from this shop twice, and I will keep returning. They are really helpful when it comes to mountain bike rentals, one lady drew me out the entire tunnel mountain route my first time: how to get there, which trails to take, and she was so straightforward and nice. The second time I rented over the weekend and they were great about reserving the bikes, even when I kept changing dates... But get this: I was on the mountain, had technical trouble, called them to troubleshoot, and they just about sent someone in the truck all the way up to help me (till I figured it out and called them to say thanks no thanks). Really down to earth staff, who know their bikes. read more
