We got our first real Christmas tree from here this past weekend, and it was a great experience :) Everyone was so nice and helpful. They had a decent selection (not too many big ones) - it's still early in the season, so I'm not sure if they'll be getting more later on. We got a 6.5' foot tree named Polar Bear. I purchased a home that Snow's had placed a french drain, which isn't working. I called the company and it took a month (I continually called and emailed for resolution) for response. They were too busy, no one could talk with me - they work limited hours which were all during my working hours. No response until included the owner in the emails. Result was - nope not covered. Asked them to give me a quote to fix the problem. The person would only meet or talk with me during a couple hours a day. In general, they were inflexible on their hours of work and mine. I was to take time off to work with them. No customer service and don't want a new customer. I will find someone who wants to work. Apparently they don't need the money. read more

Came in looking for a specific evergreen...was told no we don't have that variety, call the grower directly and have them ship it to us. No discussion of substitutes or even an "I'm sorry for the convenience " , just attitude from the manager. I've dropped a lot of money at snows in the past and have paid for delivery and installations but never again. There are more professional garden centers in the area. Additionally Snows loves non native plants, they comprise most of the inventory. No thanks. read more

I have visited Snow's many times over the years in Charlottesville and customer service has never been their strength. However, a recent interaction will ensure I never shop there again. I had an employee argue and scoff at me about signage and pricing. It was such poor customer service that another team member approached to intervene. Snow's sold me a diseased Shumard Oak. I planted it with an arborist. When it became evident that it was ill (it sprouted very few leaves), I returned to the store - the employees must be trained in "the customer is always wrong" approach. Two different employees tried to tell me the tree was planted too deep. The did give me a refund (the only bright spot), but that was after blaming me - they finally realized that their other Shumard Oaks on site were diseased. I bought two other trees this year, one from Food Lion and one from Tractor Supply - they're both thriving. Poor treatment of customers. Poor product. Overpriced. read more

gorgeous garden center. I've been to the best in DC and NYC yet I've visited a Five times and not even ONCE has any worker/owner even said "hello" much less "can I help you?" The most recent episode was this past Saturday. I finally found a person (who showed no interest in me Z-the only shopper in the facility ) asked for small deer-resistant ferns. The worker directed me to huge Ostrich ones. I explained due to large tree roots I needed small ones. she shrugged and said "Oh I don't know, they keep moving stuff around on me, so I never know where they are. Try over there" pointing to the indoor greenhouse. While I needed assistance (also looking for a black Diamond mystic magenta crepe) three workers seemed to be having a very long Union meeting in the back of the lot. For 45 minutes there were gesticulating hands and other complaints being aired down while I was hobbling around higher on the heel with a knee injury . I would have bought some 10-10-10 fertilizer but no one was available at the front cash register to even ask for a recommendation so I got in my car and called Ivy Nursery. They had what I wanted and I went dropped over $1,000 there. Perhaps it's just the "invisible woman over 60" phenomena, yet while you ignore me you forget I may be an accompliced professional who worked her entire life to have thousands of dollars to dump at your garden center, and on cars, clothes, jewelry and resorts . I couldn't ask for a better neighbor--it's three blocks from my house--when it comes to my rather ratty gardening skills. I inherited a beautiful lawn when I moved in, but in two years haven't done much to maintain it. But Snow's has been an amazing resource, providing plants, trees, herbs, and flowers of all types for my front and back yards. I never knew that kiwi trees would do well in Virginia--but I was wrong! (The progress below occurred in just two weeks!) The staff are pleasant, informed, and well spoken, the plants and products available are first-rate, and the prices are extremely reasonably given that most other major options involve a trek up 29 to Lowe's or Walmart--where the customer service is abysmal. I have shopped at Snows for years and have had mostly pleasant experiences. In April, I bought bulk compost. I got it home to unload and found plastic trash and hair (animal or human) littered throughout the load. Needless to say, I was disappointed. I reach out to the store to leave them feedback and the person I spoke to told me that the manager totally dismissed my feedback saying that "their compost was clean". I found this reaction very off putting. I will not be shipping there anymore. read more

Those who know our family know that we are understanding and patient with businesses that are making a conscious effort to do their best. We are not the type of people to complain, but I would be doing a disservice to my friends and family NOT to share this experience. [ ] Last fall, Donna and I decided we would like to extend our patio to include a walkout for sitting area with a fire pit. We hired Snow Garden & Landscape Center to scope out a solution with estimate, and perform the installation; but, have encountered nothing shy of a complete disaster ever since: lethargic installers, shoddy work, ignored requests for service and assistance, deliverables under warranty not receiving any attention when defects were identified, and on multiple occasions, making excuses when evidence of those defects were presented to the hardscape director, Ben Reid. What makes this all the more disappointing is that we never saw it coming. We had used their service previously, with no issue (different agent), and felt confident we could return to this business for a major design and installation such as this. We felt it would be a nice gift to our family upon my returning from a year-long deployment -an additional area of our home to which we could invite friends and family to enjoy themselves. Now we're completely embarrassed to bring them out to see it because of such poor workmanship. Interestingly, we talked ad nauseam about our concerns with drainage and the effects of settling in the area of installation, but Ben assured us he had a plan. We saw no evidence of any effective drainage solutions following the installation. To avoid a legal battle, and incurring an even greater expense with retaining an attorney, we pleaded with the owner, Corbin Snow to come out to our home to see for himself. He claimed he and Ben came out to our home (when we weren't home I might add) to evaluate the damage. Subsequently, he forwarded, via email, a commitment to resolve what they believed to be the problems with our walkout. They never once coordinated a time to visit when we were actually home, so we may be a part of this evaluation process. What we shared with Ben and the Snow team, is what you see in the photos we have posted. 1.   Sunken walkout platform, that creates significant pooling when it rains 2.   The metal perimeter band raised above the structure, creating a not only an unsightly design, but a trip hazard for us, our children and our guests 3.   Sharp corner edges of the metal perimeter band exposed, creating a trip hazard and potential for cuts 4.   Metal perimeter band separating from the flagstone platform, thus creating a space where debris, rocks, weeds, and the like can enter 5.   As a result of the pooling water, holes starting to form in the spaces between the flagstone 6.   Significant pooling immediately outside the area of the walkout - depth: ankle-deep 7.   Improper re-install of pre-existing sprinkler head. It is now completely exposed just below the bottom of the head Keep in mind, our installation was in November 2017. We began to experience (and report) the aforementioned issues as early March 2018. The response we received from Ben Reid was to wait it out because he believe a colder winter and frozen ground contributed to what we were reporting. For the amount we paid, we expected the type of work you see represented on their website and social media platforms. However, the service and quality of product, is quite distinct. We are not a family with a lot of money, and we appreciated that this business is a family-owned business. We felt they would be a company we could trust because of the family-oriented mentality. I suspect that only applies when it comes to the Snow family, and does not extend to its family of customers. Let's be real, we ALL make mistakes, but the fact that Snow Landscape and Garden Center refused to acknowledge their errors with design and installation when the proof was presented to them in the form of pictures is highly unacceptable, and their customer service leaves MUCH to be desired. If Snow Landscape and Garden Center had spent as much time fixing their problems as they did talking around them, I would speculate that the issues could have been resolved much sooner. Friends and family in the Charlottesville, Zion Crossroads/Gordonsville and Louisa areas, do yourselves, your friends and family a favor and share the knowledge of this company's poor performance. Snow's is located just outside the city on Avon Street on the left as you head South. It's a family run business and has been around for like 90 years. They stock high quality if not bargain priced stuff, and offer a solid guarantee. Snow's also offers full service landscaping and grounds maintenance. I've never used those services, so I can't comment. I will say the staff really knows their stuff and can answer your questions or suggest things you may not have even known to ask about. Often they have celebrations where they have a moon bounce and grill dogs and such. Nice free way to entertain the kids while you select ground cover. read more

Yes you can get a shovel cheaper elsewhere but this is a small local business, not sure what they're expecting. I used Snow's to have them do a free design layout of my backyard as I heard advertised on the radio. I did warn them that my backyard is very small, just a little patio in the back of a townhome. They told me no worries, they do big and small projects! Well my backyard is small, like under 200 square feet. The designer came out did a nice sketch and promptly sent me the estimate a few days later. $8,000! $8K to put in a concrete paver patio, mulch and a few shrubs! The labor alone was $50 an hour for a total of $4,000! I obviously went into the wrong profession. Anyways, very disappointing with the super inflated prices of this small business. read more

I moved to Charlottesville a few months ago and began to visit Snow's for several new trees and shrubs. They delivered three trees (cherries) and 10 bags of soil for a small $25 delivery fee - unbelievable! I've now purchased two additional trees (a maple and a weeping cherry), five azaleas, three rhododendrons, a butterfly bush and many annuals. Very helpful and friendly staff (Steve in particular). They also give you "Snows bucks" to use as a credit towards purchases in June. Happy to have found Snows! read more

ABSOLUTELY THE WORST EXPERIENCE - we signed up with Snows on the recommendation of our builder for a significant job for our newly built home, and regretted our decision very quickly. Watch out for great reviews on Facebook - most of them come from people that either work there, or are associated with them - what a scam! The quality of their work is extremely poor, the people they hire have no idea what they are doing - for example, they installed sod on top on 2" thick wood chip layer - comes summer, all the grass would be dead if I did not catcht it. They proposed putting down compost under the sod - and they never did - when I pointed it out, they brought a bag of fertilizer and just dumped it down - now we have dead spots where they put too much fertilizer, which burned the grass... They installed significant amount of mulch - every load they brought was a different color. I have pictures of their people sitting and playing on their phones. I can go on, and on... absolutely horrible company to work with. Their designer, Janice, wants to tell you how wonderful they are - she, herself has no idea what she is doing - when questioned about proper way of installing, she gets very defensive... and they are very expensive - I thought I was buying a piece of mind - wrong. There is something wrong with the picture when the owner shows up in his designer clothes, in his new Mercedes to supervise the site. I've been using Snow's for years, as I live very close to the store, and decided to bite the bullet this year and pay for them to come do landscaping. DON'T DO IT. Poor service, poor responsiveness, poor job. A lot of money so that I can continue to do my own lawn and yard care. They manage to send a hefty bill every month but they can't seem to get their guys out here, and when you call and complain enough they send them out to do a lousy job. VERY DISAPPOINTING.
