I have been a loyal supporter of our Atchison YMCA since the beginning of what I call my "midlife…read moreweightlifting crisis", about three years ago. From the executive director all the way to the maintenance staff, The Y is one of the friendliest and most supportive places in town. One of their trainers worked with me at the start of my fitness program, and I'm proud to say the Y staff continues to support me as I near the end of the two-year plan my Y trainer helped me build. Always ready with a warm welcome and encouragement, the Y staff and my fellow members create a true family in the best sense. They may not be the cheapest option, but the comaraderie, enthusiasm and diverse and modern facilities make up for it. True, they could use a couple more flat benches in the weight room, which shrunk a bit with the move, but I'm confident the staff has heard those requests and will expand and improve as funding allows. So, if you haven't visited the newly remodeled/expanded Y, treat yourself to a tour and join the fun. I'll see you there on Tuesdays and Thursdays for some hard cardio! The equipment is solid, both weight lifting and cardio. They've got group classes, including spin (didn't see the full schedule, but they've got bikes in the group room). The restrooms are clean and spacious, with a men's & women's room; each with two stalls & one shower. Oh! And they have two tanning booths. We visited on a Saturday afternoon, and we had the place to ourselves, save one tanning visitor. Good music playing. Really nice that we didn't have to fight for machines. I went over the weekend and Cody and AJ were working the counter. I actually asked their names. These 2 young men are very nice. I heard one of them speak to a customer by their first name, they were very friendly, smiling, & outgoing. People want to see that when you walk into the gym, I do anyway, hats off to these young men. The gym was very clean and well-kept and not overcrowded.
