Despite the rain and a lingering head cold, I had a fantastic first experience at Snallygaster last weekend. Based on some not-so-savory older reviews, it definitely seems that they've grown and corrected past issues, as everything from check in to beer pours was seamless. I purchased VIP and I'm glad I did. There were hundreds of people in VIP, and probably thousands of GA, so after the first two hours, the crowd was huge. Even still, I never felt claustrophobic, as the space reserved for the event was plentiful. Lines were never too wild. The views of the Capitol were cool, too! Line up early for VIP. We got there around 11:30 and were very far back in line. I, like most others, wanted the rare Cantillon, so I went basically straight there and that ate up the first 20 minutes for me, though it could've been longer for sure. I think it would've been cool if the VIP area had more than just bathrooms and tables. That could be a future enhancement. Also hand washing stations would've been awesome since half the porta pots were out of hand sanitizer from the very beginning. I absolutely feel like I got my money's worth ($137 for future reference) with my ticket, and they had plenty of beers in my preferred style (sours) from local, national, and international breweries. Merch was reasonably priced. I snagged a cute tshirt for $25. I didn't try the food. Hopefully I'll be healthy next year and the weather will cooperate, as I'm already looking forward to it!

2012 ==== Avery Brewing Uncle Jacob's Stout, I have never been so in love. The comparative ticket markup was totally worth it, and the food options were better than other beer festival events. Lines stayed pretty manageable on all fronts, so early admission was nice but unnecessary. Idling near the exit allowed me to score extra drink tickets from livers calling it quits. The quality and variety of beer was mad respectable, and seating availability was reasonable. The club staffers rocking out to the music by themselves was borderline sad, but I'm happy when that's my only complaint at a convention for alcoholic mythology buffs. I'm already getting pumped for 2013, hope we see cooler shirt designs (mug package was the better value) and the Snallygaster with GoPro chest cam again. 2013 ==== Much more crowded this year. Brooklyn Cuvee La Boite came a close second to my ABUJS pedestal, with Van Steenberge Gulden Draak on its heels. Honorary mentions to the Elysian & 21st Amendment collaborations. DJ was better thought out, and a kiddie section added. Dogs around despite FAQ warning of paved ground this year. Food trucks repped harder, but Red Apron filled in gaps in the tents. As always, coming early to beat crowds and kicked kegs is critical. 2014 ==== Hardywood Gingerbread Stout takes the new crown. Great food trucks, the app map was a clutch paperless option, and the rain kept the crowds manageable. !!! put on an amazing show-- intimate outdoor venue? Yes, please!

For not being a big beer guy, I LOVED Snallygaster. It's just off the National Mall and HUGE! Dozens and dozens of breweries from across the country come and sell their award-winning beer to a thirsty crowd. On top of that, there's food trucks, food stands, live music, bounce houses for kids....it's so fun!

This was my first year attending!! I got the VIP package and I'm thankful that I did. The line was long to enter so I lost about 20min of "VIP Time" just trying to get in. Once in I then ended up lining up again to get those sought after Cantillon beers. They were great and I was glad to try them all. Unfortunately the 30snally bucks you got with your VIP tickets don't go very far. Everything I wanted to try was 6-8 snally bucks for the little 4oz?? pour. Also a lot of the best stuff ran out before the VIP Time ended. The boyfriend and I ended up sharing pours and then bought $120 in snally bucks on top of the ones that come with VIP so we could try everything we wanted. This is not a cheap event, but it sure beats taking trips to each of these breweries. I do wish this was a check off list type of event and with less people. They also had a great selection of food trucks that took credit card. I will definitely come again next year as it saves me time and money in the long run, but I need to save more for extra bucks!

DC's beer festival most grand, curious what that entails? An unprecented list by ChurchKey's Greg Engert, with saisons, Octoberfests, and scores of pumpkin ales Pretty confident nothing could spoil it Til my phone met the toilet But even that couldn't tarnish the bourbon barrel aged stouts, nor fried piggy tails.

Complete crush of human beings. It's hard to enjoy good beer when you're getting knocked around by people trying to move.

Oh how the mighty have fallen... Adam W.'s review pretty much nailed it. Snallygaster 2012 was basically the greatest beer drinking event of all time. Snallygaster 2013 was clearly a victim of its own success. The truth is that the location change was the ultimate downfall. Yards Park is the ideal location for this kind of event; whereas the fenced in parking lot at Union Market felt like a cage, and all-too-familiar to the many beer drinking events in DC that are just horrible. The VIP hour was how an event like this should be... but by 1pm the masses arrived, and Snallygaster became more like a Saturday night at Churchkey. Yes, there were lots of beers, lots of awesome beers; but waiting forever to get your drink, then standing shoulder to shoulder, getting jostled and bumped and knocked around is no way to enjoy them. The "taster" portions were advertised as being 6oz pours. By 2pm they were giving you about half that in a "taste". I get that the more popular beers were probably running low, but they shouldn't advertise what they can't deliver. Not sure I'd go to Snallygaster again if they have one in 2014. There are better ways to enjoy good beer. I do like that the event's proceeds benefit a good cause, rather than the bottom line of the company running it. So for that reason I'll give it a bonus star. Otherwise, I walked away this year feeling awfully underwhelmed.

Pro's: Back at at the Navy Yard this Year... Con's: It's NOT Yard's Park, it's in a parking lot once again - Beer Time Again!!!

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% RAIN RAIN GO AWAY, COME AGAIN ANOTHER DAY It doesn't matter -- The Boys (and girls--Don't want to be accused of gender bias here) did another great job. Bringing it back to the Navy Yard was the RIGHT thing to do. Does it have something to do with the fact that BlueJacket is 10 steps away... maybe but still having this right next to public transportation (TRAINS, not buses) is the proper way to run this--the best beer event on the east coast. The rain did come down and it did come down hard yesterday but that did not stop the many many many craft beer lovers in the area from coming out and enjoying the event. LOGISTICS: Website: Set up with MAPS & Beer Lists early! Port-o-Johns: PLENTY App: A little confusing and slow but not a downer, plenty of people killed trees and printed out the map Volunteers: Great and generally friendly FOOD: Multiple food trucks-who came for the food.. I would have liked to seen better but this is by far better than 95% of the other beer festivals. GBD had a pretty good day with the chicken but ran out of doughnuts.. again, the chicken was damn good! Oh, wait, did I say BEER at SNALLYGASTER! Over 250--I believe the final tally was 273 to be exact. So many to choose from. The cask tent was out of this world. There are beers here that you cannot find anywhere else. Plain & Simple--Great JOB! The GOOD (or shall i say the GREAT): 273 types of BEER.. Yes, towards the end of the day there were the drunks who came to get drunk and not to taste amazing craft beer. Security and NRG handled these people with grace and this event was a hit. i think this was the best of the three years so far! The Bad: As Usual, the cost but if a craft beer drinker accepts this fact that each beer will cost $4-$10 and this event will cost $100+ then people will enjoy this day. This beer festival is not for the average beer drinker and is more expensive. The Ugly: It rains sometimes.. But NRG ran with it and it was great. Overall, I can't wait to see what NRG does next year. great job NRG and great job Greg! %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

    Love the mug we got!

This was a great event hosted by Churchkey at the Union Market in NoMA. Theres were countless kinds of beers organzied into 4 or 5 separate areas, two DJ booths on opposite ends of the marlet, about 8 food trucks/vendors bleachers, games (corhole, bicce, etc) and a kids section (I got tmy face paintes by a volunteer...it was awesome). The check in ran pretty smoothly, with volunteers using handheld devices to scan tickets from your phone (its the 21st century... paper ticketsare no longer necessary! ). The lines were a bit disorganized but I'm sure they will fix that next year. For the $30 advance ticket purchase, we got 25 tickets, a 1pm entry time, and an awesome mug ($50 will get you a few more tickets and a 1 hour earlier entry time). I didn't have to wait more than 5 minutes for a beer, and only 1 if my choices ran out all day (devil's backbone). Overall, the service, drinks and choices, food, and people were awesome. I will definitely be back next year!

The DC Cherry Blossom Bus Tour with Tidal Basin Guided Walk…read more I've been a resident of the DMV for 15 years and welcome the opportunity to show the highlights of D.C. when members of my family come for a visit. My sister Mary lives in Delaware and had long wanted to experience the color and drama of the Cherry Blossom Festival. These visits can be frustrating - we never really know when the blossoms will be in full bloom, and how long they'll be pretty and photogenic. This year (2026) was no different. The DC Cherry Blossom Tour, hosted by USA Guided Tours, was our go-to provider for this outing. After I ordered our tickets for a mid-week 10 a.m. four-hour tour, I received a prompt acknowledgement from TripAdvisor that the reservations were ready. I made the reservation just a few days earlier, so it was great to see the email that acknowledged our tickets and told us where to go to join the tour. The logistics involved in getting to the correct bus were easy: my sister and I showed up at the Navy Memorial, across the street from the National Archives (which is on the Yellow line Metro). A tour representative was already there and did a great job of getting us into the proper queue for our tour (USA Tours had four different tours departing that morning). The tickets were scanned and we were on our way, right on time. Highlights of the tour included walking through the cherry trees with abundant blossoms, photographers everywhere, and really pretty expressions of an early summer day in the District. We could see across the tidal basin to the impressive carved statue of Martin Luther King, Jr., which we headed to after spending the first walking excursion in the tidal basin and then the FDR Memorial. Our guide did an outstanding job of providing backstories and context to the places we visited, including the Lincoln Memorial, the World War II Memorial, and the Vietnam War Memoria. We had ample opportunities to stretch our legs, take free bottles of water, and use restroom facilities (as the bus did not have one on board). Both driver and guide handled their responsibilities very well, and we all had an excellent opportunity to see the blossoms. And, just as our guide had predicted, a severe thunderstorm rolled through the tidal basin later that day and wiped out 100 percent of the blossoms we enjoyed earlier that day. Luck of the draw!

When I realized I'd be passing through Washington, D.C. on my way home from Ocean City during peak…read morebloom, it was a no-brainer--I was stopping to see the cherry blossoms. The National Cherry Blossom Festival celebrates the 1912 gift of 3,000 cherry trees from Tokyo to Washington, D.C., and has grown into a massive, four-week spring celebration that draws more than a million visitors each year. Translation: beautiful? Yes. Peaceful? Absolutely not. Knowing that, I went in with a plan--and more importantly, managed expectations. I was not attempting a full D.C. experience. No monuments tour, no long strolls. The goal was simple: find parking, see some blossoms, take it in, and retreat before my patience expired. My GPS dropped me right into what I can only describe as ground zero for organized chaos--people everywhere, strollers everywhere, dogs everywhere, construction sprinkled in for good measure. I took a few deep breaths, smiled in the sunshine, and found a parking spot that may or may not have been intended for fishing access. Honestly, unclear. I parked anyway and accepted my fate. Worth it because once I stepped into the bloom areas, it really was as beautiful as everyone says! The trees were stunning--soft, delicate, almost glowing in the sunlight. The blossoms looked so fragile it felt like they might disappear if you touched them. And despite the crowds, there was something really special about the energy. People were fully in it--taking photos, FaceTiming friends, dressed up for full-on photo shoots, just soaking in the moment. It was chaotic, yes--but also kind of magical. I wandered for a bit, took my photos, had my "okay, I've seen it with my own eyes" moment...then promptly made my exit while I still had my sanity intact. One practical tip: if you're visiting with a group, pick a "meet back here" spot before you wander off. With the sheer number of people and distractions, it would be incredibly easy to get separated while you're all off admiring different views. Choose a landmark or meeting point while you're still together--you'll thank yourself later if anyone gets turned around. If you don't do crowds--like, really don't do crowds--this is probably not your scene. But if you can tolerate a little chaos for something truly beautiful? This absolutely deserves a spot on your once-in-a-lifetime list. And for the record...no parking ticket. A birthday miracle!

We also tried a meal from the satay truck and was also impressed. I would come back if I were in the area. It's a nice way to sample diff grub if you're with a group of people. I recently heard that they had to scale it down due to re-development in the area, but goodness, it was just way too congested and not enjoyable for me. A group of us came from Jazz in the gardens and we didn't get there until about 8:00. I'm not sure of the process of selecting which food trucks get to be at Truckeroo, but I wasn't personally impressed by any of the ones there. The lines for these trucks were super long! My friend was starving so we tried to look for a short line and decided to try capital chicken and waffle since their line didn't seem as long as some of the others. I've seen this truck around and figured I might as well give them a try. So after waiting almost 25 minutes (yes I was counting), we were able to place our orders. We both ordered the chicken and fries. My friend got a side of mac n cheese. Then began another lengthy waiting period! Sigh...finally we got our meal. Looked like regular ole chicken fingers and they pretty much were actually. Not impressed at all - was very bland and dry. Good thing I wasn't starving. OMG, the mac n cheese was disgusting - probably the worst I've ever tasted (not exaggerating). Forget trying to find a place to sit at this point. Nothing in sight!! We caught up with the others in our group and walked around. Some ventured off to get drinks. I ran into some folks I hadn't seen in awhile so that was good. Unless they find a different venue and a larger selection of food trucks, I'm in no hurry to go back to Truckeroo!

Well, this year, we put it on our calendars well in advance, and made a point to head down for the Parade of Lights. So, first of all - if you haven't heard of it before, the Parade of Lights is on the Potomac...as in, it's a parade of *boats*. The parade starts off in Old Town Alexandria (down by the Torpedo Factory), and ends up on the DC Wharf on Water Street, where all the boats dock, and there is a big awesome after party. We opted to watch from Alexandria, as we weren't really in the mood to deal with drunken revelers (I know, so unusual for me!), and I think we were ultimately glad we did. Although the docks were crowded (seriously, get there early and stake a spot!), the view was perfect. The boats were all decked out in lights, each boat with a different theme (although there should be a drinking game...whenever a boat's theme is "Christmas", you do a shot. You'll be drunk 15 minutes into this thing). So the good: The event started right on time. The kick off was supposed to be at 5:30, and the first boat pulled into view at 5:35. Awesome. Some of the boats are decked out incredibly creatively It's not your usual parade There was a professional radio DJ (I didn't catch which one...Tommy something?) that provided the commentary and filled up the time when the boats lagged behind The not so good: The DJ that was providing the commentary ran out of material about 1/3 of the way through and he started to read off tweets...which I pretty much loathe (even though I'm a huge fan of twitter) Some of the boats really lagged, so there were periods where you would just stand there in the cold waiting for another boat to pull into view It is COLD. It's the beginning of December, on the water, at night. OMG. SO. COLD. All that being said, it's a quirky, off the wall little event, and I love the creativity that the captains put into their boats. Definitely fun and weird.
