Smyths is one of the smaller brands of toy stores in the UK, with only 30 stores in England, Scotland and Wales, however they do also have 28 stores in Ireland (Republic + Northern Ireland combined) This particular store is in the Center retail park in Oldham.
Reviewing a store like Smyths can be hard, I am not a toy maniac, or even someone who knows a lot about them, so they isn't much I can comment on.
The pricing here is reasonable, with many stores offering the same prices, or slightly cheaper (on Amazon). I have found quite a few items here cheaper with Amazon or Tesco Direct (Order online before 4pm for in store delivery next day), in recent experiance items ranged from being £3.11 to £5.36 cheaper elsewhere (after p and p), so if you do have time to spare, I would always recommend Amazon or at least Tesco Direct, as they both have a tradition of being cheaper than Smyths on many products.
This store is a reasonable size, it isn't very big, or small for that matter either, and it does stock a large selection of toys, I still wouldn't say this store, is big enough to be classes as a "Superstore", when I think of Superstores, I think of the big Tesco's for example, which still have not made it to that title, and are stuck with "Tesco Extra"
The staff here seemed nice and happy to help, he helped me get prices that were not printed on the items, and was happy to explain the products to me, as I don't understand this new confusing malarkey like "Ninjago"
I have ordered with Smyths online in the past and they have flooded my inbox with spam emails, and despite "Unsubscribing" this has continued and continued, which I feel is harassment, and although it may not be to do with this store (even though I placed the order for this store online), it is someone at Head Office doing this to me, which I feel is disgraceful.
If you have kids, this can be a good place to look around in, but still unless you don't want to spend a fortune, you might have to avoid it!
This place isn't in the best place in the retail park, and it seems to be tucked in, in the back corner closer to the exit, so it can be a little inconvenient to visit, especially if you are looking around the retail park anyway, and don't want to walk all the way around it, and then in this store (especially as it can be a nightmare to get around the retail park at the moment anyway, with it being a construction sight!)
I feel 2 stars is fair, with the main reasons for this being the pricing compared to other retailers, and I simply feel this store is nothing but average, and is probably at the "lower" end of average, hence a 2 star rating. I do feel this rating is slightly unfair, and it may be revised to 3 in the near future, but for now, I feel I can only give Smyths 2 stars! read more
