Updating my review after another holiday celebrated with a delicious dessert from Smor Nordic Bakeri. This time around we went with the Swedish princess cake, or Prinsesstarta. This is probably the most expensive cake I've ever purchased at $82 -- just after last year's Jul Log from Smor and my wedding cake -- but it was a show stopper and worth the cost! This was the best cake I've ever eaten! The sponge cake, raspberry jam and vanilla cream were just perfection. And the green marzipan on the outside was actually my favorite part. Usually I find marzipan to be lacking in flavor, but this was rich in almond or cherry flavor, I think. Plus this cake was big enough that my family enjoyed it on Christmas Eve and then in the days afterward, when more family visited. Smor was also generous in fitting in our last-minute order. It was going to be hard to beat the Jul Log, but this did it. Looking forward to ordering this again! read more

Texture informs taste when it comes to any type of bread or pastry, and let me tell you, I have been informed by a Lingonberry bun at this bakery- post 16-hour fast, nonetheless. They have a lovely sales area too; if you are an aquavit-enthusiast (I have never tried it, but I must be missing out) they carry a tasting journal, which I thought was unique. Lots of cards which don't have the run of the mill drugstore artwork (get your mind out of the gutter- I just mean they have a Scandinavian flare), but best of all...black licorice! The salty kind! This is real-deal Scandinavian pastry: eating the cardamom "knot" (really a bulle/bun), I was genuinely taken back to Sweden. I've watched Smor grow from a farmers market upstart, and they have well earned a permanent place in my baked goods rotation. The Scandinavian theme is aesthetically charming and culinarily it sets itself apart from the other options in town by offering thematically appropriate and well-executed (if otherwise straightforward) sweets. On that note, here are my go-tos: If they have a fresh loaf of their brioche, pick one up. It's the best thing they've got. If you fancy cardamom at all, get yourself a cardamom knot. I try not to do this every time, since the less often I eat them the more often they seem special. But it's hard to pass up. Finally, if they have a little beet salad to go, grab one. Truly, you can't go wrong getting other things, but those are my faves. And yes, it's also a constant temptation to pick up a cutesy sticker or a Moomin knick-knack. read more

Bought 10 chocolate-chip cookies -- which made 40 small ones -- for part of desserts at Christmas. Everyone loved them! They are the best and very filling even when cut into 4's. This place is sick. Their unique pastries are so tasty and you cannot find them anywhere else except in Norway.

In town for a music fest and saw several bakeries nearby on yelp. However Smør seemed the most unique, offering several flavors of Norway & Sweden such as lingonberry and cardamom buns. The buns were light yet decadent around $3-4 per bun. There were several flavors in the pastry case I did not try such as the almond and hazelnut/chocolate buns. The employee who helped us check out at the register was so helpful and friendly! There is also a cute storefront area that has various Scandinavian memorabilia. read more

You might miss this waiting for the light at Trevillian and Poplar Level...but is well worth finding and stopping. As with most bakeries you need to get there early to get the most popular stuff but even at 2 the stuff they had left was amazing! They also have a gift shop with books, pottery, and other goodies. We picked up some pastries from Smor for breakfast to munch on while driving to Mammoth Cave. This was our first time trying Nordic pastries and unfortunately found them not as great as we anticipated. We got the following: Toffee Almond Cream Bun - Nice rich almond custard on a doughy cardamom bun with some sliced almonds on top. Very strong cardamom flavor. I didn't really detect any toffee unlike what the description states, quite possibly the almond flavor overwhelmed it. $4.50, around usual artisan pastry pricing but this one was quite a bit smaller than buns from other stores. Smork - Very soft and crumbly cookie with a nice complex sweetness and studded with melty chocolate chips. There was some toffee on this one. Kind of expensive at $3.75 Jarlsberg - Everything bagel seasoning and spinach on top with a slightly runny egg. A nice melted jarlsberg on the bottom. The pastry is filled with garlic and what I thought was green onion (but the description indicates it was spinach?). Again a very strong cardamom taste. Extremely expensive for what you get at $8. The packaging wasn't that great either - the Almond Bun and Smork were placed on top of a piece of wax paper, which was placed on the Jarlsberg. The oil on Jarlesberg managed to soak through the wax paper and penetrated the bottom layer of both of the sweets, resulting in an off putting savory flavor. I think the main issue with Smor is the pricing and not necessarily the taste or quality (although, I did find out that I'm not a huge fan of cardamom in bread). There are many other high quality artisan bakeries with organic, locally sourced ingredients, etc that are way cheaper than Smor. I would not personally go to Smor again but I can see why people like it. read more

Smør turned out to be the perfect spot to catch up with a friend while she was back in town recently. Located just down the street from the zoo, it's a surprisingly cozy spot to grab something delicious. We arrived right as the place opened. To the right as you enter is a roped-off room with typical Scandinavian living room decor - think painted sturdy furniture, not IKEA. The rest of the shop is a bakery and small gift shop with a seating area with a Scandinavian minimalist feel to it. My friend is visiting from Minneapolis and it occurred to me that this is probably just like some of the places up where she lives! I wanted something gluten free and the crustless quiches weren't out for the day yet, so I grabbed a little bistro/snack box with some carrots, hummus, crackers, and a hard-boiled egg, with a regular coffee to boot. As we sat down, a baker brought the quiches around from the basement bakery - such is life! My snack box was tasty, and it was a reusable Tupperware with dividers that I was able to take home - the kids will love it! As my friend and I chatted, quiet conversation buzzed around us and some chill music played. A server offered to bus our cups once we had finished our coffee, which was a nice touch. I fell in love with Smor Nordic Bakeri after eating their desserts at Oskars. The whipped cream frosting topping is to die for! The inside of the shop is very cute. Small unique gift items and cards are available for purchase. There is a small display case and rack on the side for breads. My husband and I only wanted a small cut cake for our wedding and we both agreed that Smor should make it. They were so easy to work with and our cake was delicious! A Norwegian bakery? I haven't been to Norway, so this was my first. The charming little space offers a small but convincing display of various pastries, as well as a few breads. I bought some pastries to share, and a bag of rolls. The rolls made some delicious sliders for me. The pastry items were quite thick in texture and were generally rich and not overly sweet in flavor. A sourdough chocolate cake was a subtle mix of the sour and the chocolate, while an almond cream pastry was a richer, more immediate flavor. The chocolate chip toffee cookie went to someone other than me, but got a rave review. It's all very butter-heavy so I wouldn't send the dairy-free person here, but otherwise, it is a very intriguing spot, and makes me interested to try the restaurant next door. read more

Øskar's Slider Bar is one of our favorite kid-friendly bars and it's super convenient for trips to the Louisville Zoo; it deserves a review of its own. That aside, it was when it was part of Øskar's that we discovered Smør Nordic Bakeri. It has since moved upstairs. Smør (the Swedish word for "butter") is the only Scandinavian bakery in Louisville. I generally gravitate towards savory more than sweet, but this place is can definitely be the exception. I ordered the Jarlsberg because it was still warm, the quiche because it's only served on Saturday, and the banofee for dessert. The quiche is the best I've ever had. It's crustless and thick. Hearty and sharp. The egg was still runny in the Jarlsberg. The banofee is decadent. It's mouthwatering. It is downright delicious. Smør also has a little shop that offers bread, croutons, coffee, tea, preserves, and a wide variety of gifts. If your family is jonesing for donuts or pastries and it's typically not your jam, or even it it is, Smør is for you. We were in town visiting and found this bakery on yelp, having just visited Oslo last fall we were excited to check it out since the pastry game in Norway is amazing. Smør = butter. Yes, and lots of it! I can't bake. But I'm a connoisseur of fine bakeries. I'm so glad for Smør to join Louisville's lineup of fine bakeries. As soon as I opened their door, I'm already in love w that smell of butter and yeast in the air. I picked up a few twists, a couple of cookies and a crustless quiche. They are all so buttery, soft and fluffy! I like that European baked good tend to go lighter on sugar but heavier on butter and cream compared to American baked goods. Owned by the folks behind Oskar's Slider Bar (and Grind, but Oskar's is more relevant here), this is the morning/mid-day sister to the afternoon/evening delight that is Oskar's. In fact the two share a parking lot, but are in distinct buildings. For those not familiar with Oskar's, what are you doing with yourself?! But seriously, if you aren't familiar, there is a decided Scandinavian influence in the decor and a subtle but still present influence in the drink and food menus at Oskar's. Smor, on the other hand, isn't going for mere influence. As the name asserts, this is a Nordic bakery. As such, their offerings include cardamom buns and lefse (Norwegian potato pancakes). On my visit, I found that they carry more than just baked goods; here is a place for all of your twee woodland themed home goods, Moomin gear, Pippi paraphernalia, and other Nordic inspired knick-knacks. I almost got lost in a sea of tea towels and fox mugs I absolutely don't need but suddenly very much want, making this is a nice place to look for a cute gift, particularly for the Scandinavian in your life. But I was there for the baked goodies, and I was not disappointed. I was delighted to see that in addition to all the sweet and savory treats on offer behind the glass at the counter, they also had a rack with lefse and loaves of bread that I look forward to trying another time. A small refrigerated case holds some cold sides from Oskar's including the legendary pink beet salad, which is my fav. I picked up a slice of the special kvaefjordkake cake they made for the 75th Anniversary of Pippi Longstocking, as well as the pancakes they were offering that day. I decided that as it was my first visit I had better try some of their more standard offerings so I got a cardamom knot, a snickerdoodle, and, at the suggestion of the person behind the counter, a Jarlsberg Spinach and Egg Knot. Order the swedish Prinsess Tårta from the Smör Nordic Bakery. I was very disappointed with the 7lb cake. The Prinsess Tårta looked beautiful. However, the recipe was all wrong. There should be 3 layers of sponge cake with layers of tasty raspberries, whipping cream/vanilla curd. This cake had only one layer of raspberries, no whipping cream/ vanilla curd. It did have way to much whipping cream under the green almond top layer. Will not order again. read more

I don't know much (as in I know nothing) about Nordic cuisine so I can't vouch for the authenticity of their baked goods but they all looked delicious! And the place smelt sooo tasty. I was practically drooling as soon as I walked in. I picked out a variety of sweets to bring home to try with my hubs. (And my sister who dissed on the Rose and lemon knot that I thought was delicioussssss) I would definitely get the danish and ALL of the knots again. But the soft almond-y cookie that I can't find on their menu was my absolute favorite and I am about to go get more. Anyhow, go and check this place out. We stopped in and left with a Smør-gasbord of tasty baked goods. Everything was very delicious. The Jarlsberg, Spinach and Egg Knot looks like a dense beast, but is light with a slight chew, it's a mash up of a pretzel and a bagel with an airy twist. The everything seasoning on top helped bring out the flavors of the spinach and accent the egg. We had the pleasure of getting a Pimento Cheese scone. It was a little heavy with the fresh dill resulting in the cheese getting lost, but it was the perfect scone.
