Okay Modern Market, I see you…read more I was on the hunt for a healthy-ish spot for lunch (I mean, hello it is January), when I came upon Modern Market Eatery on Yelp. Upon doing some research I learned it's a scratch kitchen specializing in clean eats, and that it's a chain. A win for the health options, a ding for the chain, but not all chains are bad, an we are living in a time where there are some winners. So, I packed myself up and headed down the road to Prairie Village. It's still fairly new, and it has that squeaky clean feeling to it when you arrive. Inside it's counter service and you seat yourself (they will bring the food to you). It kind of reminded me of how Noodles and Company felt when they first became a thing way back in the early 2000s. I ordered a thai salad that came in at under 400 calories so I was honestly skeptical at how big or flavorful it would really be when it arrived, and holy cow was it good. The chicken was cold, but still held some flavor, the dressing was great, there were fresh veggies, pickled onions. It was one of the best 400 calorie meals I've had in a long time. My dad ordered the salmon curry and he also enjoyed his though I didn't try it so jury's out on my opinion! I left full and happy to have discovered this spot. I'll be back soon!

The sauce that was on my sandwich was different than the picture online. I did get my order through Uber Eats. The veggies were very fresh and crispy on the sandwich. The fire roasted veggies were not seasoned except for a bit of turmeric but it didn't really have a taste. Overall the food was good and very fresh but the price was a bit high.

As someone who lives in St. Louis and visits Kansas City several times per year, I always make it…read moremy mission to stop by Cafe Gratitude for a meal while I'm in town! I tried Cafe Gratitude for the first time a few years ago, and I haven't stopped thinking about this place since. They provide more than just food... it's a whole EXPERIENCE. I've always been very warmly greeted at the front entrance. Sometimes while visiting, I've had a short wait. Other times are more empty, such as when there's a Chiefs game. All of the employees are extremely kind, personable, and welcoming. Service has truly never lacked for me here. You will notice right away that every menu item is an affirmation. At the top of the menu, it says, "I Am..." and each drink, appetizer, and entree is a positive word. As your food is delivered, they tell you your affirmation. For example, if I ordered the Warm Hearted bowl, they would say, "You are Warm Hearted." Even the water pitchers at each table have affirmative words on them. It's the little things like this that make Cafe Gratitude so special! Also, as you're placing your order, your server will leave your table with a "question of the day" that you can reflect upon and discuss with others. My partner and I love these prompts while we're waiting on our food. There's also a deck of special cards at each table that have additional questions for reflection! I try to order a different menu item every time I visit, so I've enjoyed a little bit of everything at this point. For appetizers, you have to try the Plentiful (chili). While I've never had anything here that I didn't love, my top favorite entrees would have to be Terrific (raw pad thai bowl), Warm Hearted (Italian polenta and squash noodles), and Whole (macrobiotic bowl). I also love Grateful, also known as their community bowl. If you need financial assistance with this bowl, you may pay a sliding scale of $3-11. If you want to contribute to someone else, you can pick an amount and set it aside for someone in need. I wish more businesses did this! During my most recent visit, I decided to try Transformed (tacos), which include sweet potatoes, black beans, guacamole-style hummus, pico de gallo, and cashew nacho cheese on organic corn tacos. They were delicious, but I'll probably stick to my bowls next time! It came with a side salad that wasn't anything super special but still full of flavor. The walls of the restaurant are covered in local art that rotates regularly and is available for purchase. The space itself is very cute and cozy. I read more about Cafe Gratitude's story on their website, and much of the interior is upcycled. For example, many of the light fixtures are made of old wine and vodka bottles. At the host stand, they have Cafe Gratitude postcards that you can write a message on, and they'll mail them out for you. The flavors of everything here is unmatched. Such unique combinations that my heart so happy. I always leave here feeling so fulfilled.

The ambience is stylish and lively -- a little on the loud side when it gets busy, but still totally tolerable and honestly part of the energetic vibe that makes the place feel like a real KC social spot. Now let's talk food. We ordered the shrimp and grits, Korean beef tacos, and fries with aïoli -- and every single thing was delicious. The shrimp and grits were fantastic, rich and flavorful, and the creole garlic shrimp paired perfectly with the warm baguette they serve alongside it. That baguette was perfect for soaking up every last bite. The Korean beef tacos were packed with flavor -- a great balance of savory, a little sweet, and just the right amount of kick. And the fries with the aïoli? Crispy, addictive, and the perfect shareable starter for the table. Everything tasted fresh, well seasoned, and thoughtfully prepared. Add in great service and a buzzing atmosphere, and you've got a spot that's definitely worth putting into your Kansas City dining rotation. Four stars from this KC foodie -- I'll absolutely be back to explore more of the menu especially that oatmeal cream pie for dessert!!!

We were hoping to take advantage of happy hour but were told it was only in the bar area (didn't say that anywhere on the website). Oh well! We didn't get any alcohol because of this though. Our server/service was very slow. We had to ask for drink refills multiple times, only after we caught the attention of our server. She was very nice but slow and not a great server. There were a lot of large groups celebrating together so it was loud, especially the table next to us who had a guest that honestly was so loud it really tainted our experience. That's not really the restaurants fault though, other than the table being so close to theirs. We were talked in to ordering the cheddar biscuits. They were...fine. They didn't really taste cheesy, more just like normal biscuits. Good but nothing super special and we wish we would have either not go them or got a different appetizer. My husband got the pastrami and it was good. I got the Korean steak and noodle salad and it was pretty good but lacked a little something to make it truly memorable. I would say there's enough noodles to make it more of a cold noodle bowl than a salad, too. We would try it again. The menu is large with variety so there is something for everyone.

Holy cow did I LOVE this place!…read more I had just worked a 12-hour shift with my last ride taking me from STL and dropping me in KC! My options seemed limited that late at night, but pasta seemed to be calling my name so I landed here. I may have been a little under dressed, but no one treated me any different. From the moment I walked in and through my visit, the customer service was exceptional. My server, I wish I remembered his name, was amazing and everything he recommended was totally chef's kiss! I couldn't decide between the pasta I craved, or the highly recommended hanger steak, so I got both! Excuse my yelling but, THE HANGER STEAK WAS ABSOLUTELY TO DIE FOR!!! I had no idea!! All I know is that I thought there would be leftovers and I was ready to lick the plate! Nothing went home with me. I haven't been able to stop talking about the hanger steak since. I would probably order a different pasta next time, or none at all. Also, the focaccia was incredible as well. (Excited about that, but it wasn't the highlight clearly) I'm ready to drive back to KC JUST for the steak. Absolutely phenomenal.

For pastas, we had the lumachi and the rotolo, which is a rolled pasta filled with butternut squash. The hanger steak entree was probably our favorite of the night. And to finish off the meal we had the soufflé which was very delicious, and the creme puffs. Overall really good meal, nothing mind blowing in terms of flavors, but it's definitely a restaurant to add to your usuals. Service was very good.

When we told her it was our first visit to the restaurant, she took the time to carefully go over the menus with us (regular, happy hour, and drinks), providing her recommendations when we asked. Her guidance was spot-on-target! For drinks, I had a Mindful Chai and my friend had the 3-Beverage Flight (Golden Hour, Heart Says Thanks, and Tres Raices). My chai was the BEST I have ever tasted (and I order chai every chance I get!), and my friend loved her 3 drinks (she said Tres Raices was her favorite). For our food, we split an order of the Not Queso Dip and the Avocado Tostadas. We were both very impressed by how fresh the ingredients were, and the blend of flavors in each dish that created a unique and yummy taste. The Kitchen has an open, airy layout that inspires deep breathing, while the arrangement and spacing of tables still provides for intimacy of conversation and minimal ambient noise. Sofhia checked back with us several times during our meal to ensure we had everything we needed and were thoroughly enjoying our food and drink (we were!). It was a delightful meal, and we thank Sofhia, the kitchen staff, and everyone at Whole Harvest Kitchen for such a lovely time. We'll be back!!

We didn't sample, but next time I'd like to try a flight of their wellness drinks! The LETTUCE CRUNCH WRAPS (soy-glazed jicama & tofu, lentil, pickled veg, walnut, cilantro, sesame dip) were an absolute favorite. Highly recommended! The texture was very well balanced. Silky smooth butter lettuce and a delicious sauce on the side, although it truly didn't even need it. The AVOCADO TOSTADAS (blue corn tostada, guacamole, quinoa, white bean, radish, pickled red onion, super seed) were yummy, but our least favorite of the three. Instead of a thin layer of mashed avocados, I'd honestly just put a few nice slices of avocado for the bulk of it. Taste was lovely! It is a totally cold dish, fyi. The HARVEST WOK BOWL (split pea-fu, beluga lentil, farro, snap pea, greens, brown rice, daikon, cashew, ginger-scallion sauce) was completely phenomenal. I could do without the split pea-fu, but it probably added some great nutrition! The FLAVOR and texture of this dish was so so good. I can't even right now. (As my teenager would say...) Enjoy!!

You can tell a lot of thought went into creating the space. What really sets this place apart is the wood-fired cooking. Everything is prepared over Missouri hickory and oak, and you can truly taste the difference. The food has this incredible smoky depth that makes every bite feel elevated and intentional. I also love that they source ingredients from local farmers, which really comes through in how fresh and vibrant everything tastes. The menu feels seasonal, thoughtful, and well-executed. It was a full, nicely cooked piece with great flavor, not a small portion tossed in as an afterthought. The salad had fresh greens, avocado, egg, and plenty of nuts and toppings that made it feel filling and well put together. My only issue was the packaging. The salad container was left fully open inside the bag, and the bag was stapled shut. I did not realize there were staples and cut my hand opening it. Because I was in a hotel and had put a few small items in the bag, they ended up falling right onto the exposed salad when I opened it. For delivery orders, a closed container and a safer seal would make a big difference. Food quality was excellent though, and I would order again, just hoping for better delivery packaging next time.
