There are parking bays on both side of the road where you can park your vehicle. Heading east like we did is the easier way of course, since you won't have to cross the - on this section quite busy - road. The views of the bay and the beach are very nice and rewarding. And this little viewpoint is a great one. There's enough room for a handful of cars beside this one-lane road. And the views are spectacular. The hills, the river Dionard making its way through the glen...it's how you picture the Highlands. It's a quiet, peaceful spot - there was nobody there except us on that cloudy summer day and only few cars passing through. Of course there are many spots to check out, but this one's worth a stop. The broch was easy to spot from the main road and was approximately 2 miles south of Ben Hope and its corresponding car park. Signage/informational placard(s) communicated the broch was built over 2,300 years ago and reached as tall as approximately 7 metres. Collapse partially made the interior inaccessible. The River Strathmore ran past the broch. Access was via a road branching south from A838 in a town named Hope. When leaving, I followed it to connection with A836 and headed south. My phone did not have reception, and it was raining and hailing, and I found a paper map I had packed to be an effective guide to navigate by.

I had driven from Keiss to John O'Groats and was on my way to Hope, on Wednesday 10 July 2019, when I noticed an area to pull-off with what appeared to be some signage as well as a car or two. I had been hoping for a place to stop that had some information about where I was and appreciated the signage. One informational sign denoted the spot as Bettyhill Viewpoint and had a cross section of the landscape with mountains marked by name and elevation. Another sign communicated it was dedicated for people who drowned in Kirtomy Bay. The view of the landscape was nice and sheep were out grazing.

Before going for a walk I went to look at this church. The atmosphere was very magical and eerie on that grey and cloudy day. Only a few visitors on the grounds. It was probably built in 1619, later on some parts were added and rebuilt. It was in use until 1814. Even though there might have been a church before on this site. Dating back to 1200. So it is quite the historic site. And the graveyard holds some interesting memorials. Really worth a walk and a look around. Very nice remains and very pretty. Combine your visit to the beach with a visit to this church.
