We had been wandering through Brick Lane and Spitalfields and Bob was hungry. We weren't -- after a filling brunch 4 hours earlier, we were still a bit full. But he was determined we would try Smokoloko.
Despite ending up absolutely stuffed, I'm glad he did. This was street food at it's finest. Fresh, tasty, simple, and quick. They smoke barbeque the meat right on location -- in an awesome bespoke locomotive BBQ -- slice and dice, and serve it up ready to go. Choose from rump steak, brisket, or chicken. After trying the steak I was too busy savouring it to pay further attention to the other meats. There's also a variety of BBQ sauces if you so desire.
We all ended up with the steak sandwich. I'm not sure what bread they use, but it reminded me a lot of Persian sangak bread -- chewy and strong enough to not fall to pieces with the meat juices. Also, very tasty. The sandwich was basic -- rocket, onion, and steak. Plus a bit of BBQ sauce. And the meat was juicy with caramelised crispy bits and a delicious flavour. Definitely worth a stop if you're at Spitalfields! read more
