Smoke's Poutinerie was our first official stop in Halifax! This is a chain restaurant that I'm pretty sure we've been to before around Toronto, and I love that they have a standard vegetarian option available.

I hate to say it...but I don't get the hype around Smoke's. My husband and I went for lunch the other day and I was expecting a lot based on some of the reviews I've seen. But honestly? New York Fries is better. I know. I'm heart broken too. The interior is great - they've got a pretty small space, but there is a ton of seating. It's a little plaid heavy, but hey, that's the schtick right? I'm good with it. And they have a huge menu, so I was really optimistic. We ordered the regular poutine and the perogy poutine. The portion sizes are great - I was stuffed after. So it's a good value for money...if you like gravy that doesn't have any taste to it at all. I want to taste the gravy if I'm getting poutine! The curds were bland, and the fries were okay, so I was overall pretty disappointed with my order. The perogy poutine was a bit better because of the ham chunks interspersed within the fries. The perogy was medocre at best - it tasted like it was from one of those big bags at the grocery store that you reheat. But the ham gave the gravy more taste, so this one was better over all. I appreciate that Smoke's does vegetarian gravy and that they have a huge menu, but maybe they should perfect their gravy before going all out first?

I've never heard of anything called poutine before. So when we were just strolling along the bay downtown Halifax and stumbled across this awesome delicacy, I had no chance but to fall on love w a it. We ordered the bacon cheeseburger (perhaps the most sinful of all). It was wonderful! Chunks of beef and fried bacon, lots of cheddar and mozzarella cheese, gravy (not unlike what they use for KFC's whipped potatoes) and of course their generously cut fries. I began writing this review with 5 stars, but I felt my throat close up due to the heavy flavor as I was trying to finish it up. Turns out it's a bit too much for me, with regards to quantity and taste. Still, I would choose it any day to fill my tummy :D

Tossing down against the local king of poutine, Willy's, Smoke's recently opened up directly across the street from Willy's, and with more regular hours, a more diverse menu and a less sketchy set up, Willy's has some serious competition on their hands. I come in on a Thursday after work and upon entering I am immediately greeted by loud rock music and and equally loud design scheme. There's a chalkboard and available chalk and what looks like random scrawling of people who were out at the Dome on the previous night. I may be in a suit and tie, but I dig it. Smoke's isn't large and seats no more than 12 at bars in the middle of the room and around the sides. There's a steady flow of people coming and going, running the gamut of all levels of society - suited professionals, starving students and a lovely young lady who was rocking the "hot librarian" look like no other, and probably wasn't a poutine regular judging from her figure. But yeah....back to that food stuff I'm supposed to write about.... With a menu that sports what I counted to be 18 different poutines, there is a lot of choices here. I settle on the Country Style, and choose the regular size ($6.99) as I want to be able to walk out of here. With large chunks of chicken, bacon and caramelized onions and mushrooms in addition to the usual gravy and cheese curds, this was a meal unto itself. The chicken is seems too uniform in shape to be anything but from frozen, but it isn't dry and let's face it, it's chicken. The chopped bacon is plentiful and delicious, and is still crisp with lends a nice textural contrast to the rest of this hot mess. The onions and mushrooms soothe my food guilt by being vegetables and are quite tasty themselves, although the caramelized onions have been seasoned with too much thyme and in the absence of any bacon, tends to dominate the flavour of a given forkful of poutine. The gravy is good, although thinner and somewhat lost amongst all the other toppings. The curds, while tasty, don't seem to have that squeak that poutine pros require. Me, I love anything cheese and continue to stuff my face. The fries have a good potato flavour and are crisp, even to the very last chip. The containers are cardboard boxes that are reminiscent of your stereotypical Chinese-takeout box, and are lined with some sort of plastic which will keep your pants grease free when one of these nights you're sitting on the wall by the church, munching on Smoke's and watching some poor drunk get thrown in a paddy wagon. Also, they have sriracha as a condiment. Bonus points!

There is nothing like cheese curds and gravy...who needs the fries? This is a great place with tons of choices, even VEGETARIAN choices! Yes you veggies can enjoy too!!! The staff are awesome, the music is awesome, and with all the hills surrounding I at least work off 1/4 of the calories! The only downside, in my opinion, is that there is no SMALL size, the reg is way too big for me, and I cant share cause my boyfriend is weird and likes crazy things on his poutine! I would like a little more flavor to the gravy as well, even a little more pepper!! I cant wait to go back...though I'm sure my waistline can!

I've just popped a TUMS as I'm writing this. Those with stomach of steel can read further. Just got out of a late meeting and wanted something within a few blocks and cheap. Being after 1pm, the joint was empty. I quickly went up to the counter and asked the advertised poutine outside - beef curry poutine. I wasn't sure of the size, so I picked large. Well mistake #1. Unless you'll be sharing this, go for the regular. After a 8 min wait, I got my hot box of gooey fries. At first it tasted fine, fries were still incredibly hot if you dug to the bottom. But as time went on the heaviness of the poutine was coming on. Cheese was a bit light and the fries were ok. Not overly impressed for what I got for 12$ (large poutine & pop) especially now the flavors have lingered and the meal has settled. I think the sauce is a bit off. From the previous reviews I will +1 to that. Presentation and service was fine, maybe I'll stick to the traditional dishes next time, or if I happen to in the area at 1am. Seating is limited ~10 so this is a take & go spot.

Our first stop after we landed in Halifax! And our first poutine ever! They had so many choices, it was hard to decide but I ended up with the bacon poutine. Wish there had been a few extra cheese curds, but otherwise very tasty. Tried some of my sister's pulled pork poutine and that was good, too. The only other "negative:" for me was that the fries were a bit soggy by the time I got to the bottom - not sure if that's normal for poutine though. Wish I had had a chance to try the other kinds!

This was our first time trying poutine, so I did some research. My husband is a vegetarian and this place had the option of a vegetarian mushroom gravy- so we had to try it. I got a little adventurous and tried the Philly cheesesteak poutine. I'm a Philly girl, had to get it. It was good, but obviously extremely heavy when it hits your stomach! My only critique is that the roasted red peppers on top are not really Philly cheesesteak related at all. My husband got the vegetarian poutine and his was really good. Not crowded at all in the middle of the afternoon, food came out quickly. It's open super late for your drunken poutine needs. Tons of options on the menu.

Filipino food is probably my favourite international cuisine, with its delicious mix of Asian and…read moreSpanish flavours, and while their fast food is much more American-ized than their more traditional stuff, it's its own little niche that deserves some love too! McJolly was started by Filipino immigrants who became restauranteurs in Halifax and takes its name from two of the most popular fast food chains in the Philippines. No guesses are needed for the prefix, but the second part may be less familiar for Maritimers - Jollibee. They're only just starting to expand in Canada, with about 30 locations across the country, and are known for their assorted menu of fried chicken, burgers, and Filipino-style spaghetti. The menu at McJolly is much the same, and I had the fried chicken section in my sights. I went for Comb Meal #3 - fried chicken, rice and your choice of coleslaw or corn (I chose the latter). I thought I was getting a lighter meal than some of the combos that have both rice and spaghetti, but when my tray was in front of me, the *four* pieces of chicken (two drumsticks and two thighs, go Team Dark Meat!) said otherwise! Hilariously, I was in a bit of a rush to get to a job interview, so I had to inhale this meal and couldn't quite give it the attention it deserved, but there were really only four different items - the chicken, steamed rice, corn and gravy. I won't play coy and leave it until the end of the review - the chicken was awesome! The coating was super crisp, and the meat within was moist and tender. I do wish Filipino fried chicken had more seasoning to it, but hey, well executed fried chicken is still a wonderful thing! The gravy had a pleasant peppery kick to it, and I slathered it over both the chicken and the rice. The small cup of corn was a bit of an afterthought, and I probably should have gone with the coleslaw on the off chance that it would be a vinegar-based dressing to have something to cut through the rich chicken, but it's likely mayo-based anyway. I love that Filipino food has really been blowing up in Halifax the past few years, and I'll definitely be doing a deep dive into it all, including a return visit to McJolly for the spaghetti next time!

It's very reminiscent of the food courts in complexes connected by The PATH in Toronto (eg the Richmond-Adelaide Centre, TD Place, Commerce Court, etc.). I like that there are several independent vendors, and there are some chains that are specific to Atlantic Canada (which are cool to me because I'm from Ontario). There are of course also big national and international chains, but I didn't travel to Halifax to eat stuff that I can eat in Ottawa, right? However, if you live in Halifax and want an A&W burger or a Iced Capp from Tim Hortons, they have those at The Mix too. So some of their newest offerings are Katch and Pizza Girls (they are together), Tin Pan Alley Gourmet Fries, and Sushi Tonari. The older vendors include A Taste of India, A&W, Booster Juice, Freshii (which is newish), Korea Garden, Mama Gratti's, Mezza Lebanese Kitchen, Starbucks, Subway, Thai Express, and Tim Hortons. There is a lot of seating and the food court is bright, clean, and spacious. I'm a fan.

Baked goods are definitely "my thing" and I was curious to settle upon, for once and for all, which spot has the best cookie! The contenders: Starbucks, Second Cup, and Treats. These are the main places one may venture for a treat, and I didn't bother with Tim Horton's because the lines are always too long. I purchased one cookie from each store, and noted the selection available as well. Sitting down at a table in the mall, I laid all three cookies out in front of me and sampled each with a bite. The results? Starbucks! Best cookie, hands down. I purchased the white chocolate & maccadamian nut, which was soft and chewy just how I like it. Although Starbucks tends to run low on cookies fairly often, so that can be a drag. Second Cup comes in second, with a tasty chocolate chip, and Treats comes in last place because of the overly crisp (bordering burnt) taste. So there you have it folks. If you're looking for the best fix for a Scotia Square cookie, I'd recommend Starbucks.

The portions were on the small side and I hardly got any vegetables or potatoes :( The taste was ok though, but not as fantastic as I had hoped. I got the Seoul Chicken, regular sized plate ($7.15). I got white rice instead of fried rice. The plate came with the teeniest portion of vegetables (cabbage, carrots and celery) and about 7 tiny cubes of potatoes. The portion of chicken was ok, but by no means generous. The amount of rice was in proportion to the meat, I didn't have much rice leftover, so at least the plate wasn't filled with rice. The chicken itself tasted good. It was fried chicken pieces, mostly dark meat, but it wasn't too fatty or gristley at least. The sauce was sweet and savoury. It was not spicy. The potatoes were a bit boring without too much flavour to them. I liked the lightly pickled vegetables. They were still somewhat crunchy. I would have liked some more though. Service was very courteous and efficient. Korea Garden is in the Scotia Square food court, which is branded "The Mix." There's lots of seating. I'm glad that I tried it, but I certainly am not hooked on it, like I've read other reviewers (both on Yelp and other platforms) are, lol.
