I had already left a review on Google a long time ago, but decided to leave one here on Yelp today. I was very surprised by the negative reviews. I've been to a large list of veterinarians over the past 20+ years, and I've had one of my best experiences here at SVH. Firstly to address the negative review regarding the full examination "without warning" -- it is STANDARD PROCEDURE at any veterinary hospital to include a full examination if you haven't been to see the vet in about 4-ish weeks (it can vary very slightly from vet to vet, but the most common number I've seen is 4 weeks). After 4 weeks, it's difficult for the vet to say that your pet is in the "same" condition as when they were last seen, and it becomes a liability for them to simply administer vaccinations or other medications or give medical advice, without fully assessing their health once again. I hope I'm making sense! It's not only at SVH that this procedure is done, it's at EVERY VET I have ever been to, all around the United States, British Columnbia, and Ontario. Even if your pet was seen by a vet at a different hospital 1 week prior, your new vet can be held liable if they don't do a physical before they administer any kind of medical advice/tool/treatment/medication! Now this being said, 4 weeks is STANDARD for all hospitals, but the other reviewer is complaining saying that their cat had a clean bill of health 6 months ago... a lot can change in 6 months. Secondly, I am not sure about the groomer at SVH. I have never seen her, met her, or used her services, but I don't believe I can judge SVH based on the groomer's services. My personal experience at SVH has been nothing but wonderful. All the vet techs, assistants, and doctors are kind and understanding. They don't push medication, vaccination, or medical procedures unnecessarily, and know how to accept "No thank you" for an answer. I can tell they really care about their patients! I've never seen them get frustrated or upset with any patient, no matter how difficult the patient was being. Just today, I saw a dog that I was afraid would get very aggressive, but Dr. Cox handled him like a pro. Prices are about the same as most mid- to high-end vets I've been to. Not unreasonably expensive, but I am not the first to complain about high prices as I know that there are many factors behind the price of veterinary services (ex. Experience of vet, specialized services, what type of equipment it is and how new/advanced the equipment is, etc.). If I feel like I don't require a particular service, I let them know and they don't try to guilt me. They have always provided top quality care for my babies, and have treated them as if they were their own. I know I can be a super annoying pet parent, because I'm constantly bombarding the doctors with questions. But they always take the time to address all of my concerns without becoming frustrated or condescending. I couldn't ask for a better hospital! read more

I am not a big reviewer but I can not say enough good things about Smith's. A lot of people with pets (and free universal Health Care) have a bit of sticker shock when obtaining any vet care. Probably the same people that complain about hospital parking fees. SVH is in the business of examination. That is what all their education, training and facility costs are geared for. Grooming service is a perk. Experienced pet owners know that for every issue there are probably 3 possible causes you can take to further identify and address. You start with the most likely and start crossing off. Vets cost are expensive but they are expensive everywhere. Charges typically align just like Dental services. With Smith you get a great team, compassionate and experienced. I have spent a lot of money at Smith's over the years but I also have had the peace of mind I was doing right by our animals and they were in good hands. read more

They are nice enough but money hungry. Went in for just a nail trim. Was told I must get the rabies vaccination since the cat was due. I said no problem and confirmed the price for the trim and the vaccination before proceeding. My bill ended up being $100 more than I was initially told as they decided to throw in a physical exam without my asking and without telling me. Was not needed. My cat had her last full physical 6 months prior and is only 2 and in great shape. The vet saw my cat for about 5 minutes and charged me $100 for that. I fought it saying I never asked for a physical and they wouldn't budge. They told me a full physical was mandatory with any vaccination. Even though they had record of a healthy physical 6 months prior! Insane. Found a new vet and they don't have the same greedy policies. read more

Hospital is clean , vet staff are nice and there is good doctors . Just groomer lady is very rude ,I had appointment for grooming at 8am , when I got there , she is refused to accept my dog just because last time was in summer you came here . read more

We can't say enough about this amazing Vet clinic. We having been going to Smith Veterinary Hospital since moving to Ontario more than 8 years ago and have always been blown away by their wonderful customer service and willingness to go above and beyond to serve their clients. You get a true sense of their love of animals and the staff are always helpful & supportive no matter the situation. Stay Away from these liars I had been taking my dog there for a couple years and was happy with them. One night after I picked up my dog from the groomer, Sherry, I noticed her ear was beaten by another dog! She is always on leash and never in company of other dogs. She is our only pet. The only place she could have been attacked was when she was with the groomer! I don't want to share how that broke my heart but the hospital did not own up to it and instead told me I should let them do surgery the dog that would cost about a $1000! I took my dog to another vet who said the bite marks were obvious but my dog wouldn't need a surgery. The ear was dead tissue and it fell off. It breaks my heart every time I look at my dog. I didn't make a fuss at the hospital because that's just not my personality, but they should have admitted their mistake rather than lying to me. It's a shame. I never went back read more

Incompetent staff - stay away! Today was the scheduled surgery for one of my dogs. Both are small dogs and from the same breed and they look very similar in appearance, except one is 25% heavier than the other, which can have a substantial impact on the amount of anesthetics to use as well as impact other decision in the operating block. When I arrived I was told everything was ready for... Kalina (the smaller dog) which is much smaller than Meeka... had I delegated the drop off to someone else from the family, or had the receptionist not said the name of the dog the clinic thought they were about to operate on, this mistake could have remained unchecked, further leading to complications, which could have led to a bad ending (poor choice of anesthetics amount can lead to death). I asked to speak to the doctor which had not yet started surgery on any dog that day. A mistake had been made and I wanted to make sure everyone involved in Meska's operation would be made aware this was Meeka indeed and not Kalina... the staff felt the operating doctor was too important to be bothered with such questions... I asked 3 times to 2 different staff members and was forced to decide : leave your dog today for surgery and then speak later (after the surgery) to the doctor or leave... the next window for surgery is the following week. I won't be returning to this den of incompetence again. read more

The one bad review is the correct review. The others must be her staff or friends. Dr. Dana Cox killed my cat. Why would an Emergency Vet refer this place for an old cat as the review says, it makes No sense so that review is incorrect. I know everything about medicine. Dr. Cox knows nothing and admitted that she didn't know anything about his heart condition. I warned her that he can't have any fluids. Dr. Cox told me to take my old cat to an Emergency & just as I was deciding, the $$ sounded better so she went to take blood work from him and stick him with a shot of fluid under his skin. I WARNED her again and she just nodded. I am heartbroken & sick to my stomach that I let her take him away my precious baby in her incompetent hands as well as staff to the back. She takes Xrays, bloodwork & sticks him with the fluid. I expected it to be a shot under the skin but when she brought him back, she said there was a bulge of fluid on his back. They left it in there when I specifically told her that he can't have fluids due to his heart. He was the talk of the Vet & walking around when I brought him in. Within 10 minutes, he was yelping, crying in pain and paralyzed. She put him into Cardiac Arrest. She then says he is critical, no time to go to Emergency but he needs blood AND BEST OF ALL, she carries NO BLOOD and has to get another cat half hour away for a transfusion (I didn't know that I was in Siberia). My Cat died within 10 minutes. She killed a beautiful cat. He would eventually die, let it be on his own and not at the hands of this incompetent Vet that should NEVER EVER PRACTICE OR TOUCH AN ANIMAL AGAIN! DO NOT GO HERE. read more
