Curtis and his crews are simply the best in town. Professional and no short cuts taken on our side yard project. We had an estimate that was 1-2k lower however when we met with Curtis we knew right away he was our contractor. You get what you pay for and our project came out with the highest of quality you can possibly expect. We love our yard. We went from dirt to this. Thank you again.

    After: Finished side yard

I recently had the pleasure of working with Curtis and his crew, and we couldn't be more thrilled with the design and look of our side yard. They transformed our outdoor space into a perfect place for our kid and dogs to enjoy being outside. These guys are the best of the best in SCV and Los Angeles Highly recommended for anyone looking to enhance their landscape with a top-notch crew.

Last Fall we decided to take advantage of SCV Water's lawn replacement program (Thanks so much for Chavon's help--we would have struggled without her guidance through the process). It was a long process as we were planning on basically re-landscaping almost our entire back yard after having lived here for 20+ years. We interviewed 5 contractors...and knew right away that Curtis of Smith Landscaping was our 'guy.' Two of the others were 'sales' people. Curtis is the owner of Smith Landscaping and wrote up a concise line by line proposal with prices for each item we wished to have changed/installed. We went with a south-western 'look,' with drought tolerant plants, pavers and decomposed granite. We had drip irrigation installed for every plant in our back yard including almost 50 new plants. We had almost 50 2'x2' pavers set in concrete as well as about 200 linear feet of bed brick edging installed. Curtis was on top of everything--always available and flexible when changes and additional work were requested. Also he has a good attitude, a good sense of humor and is very friendly. But probably the most important aspect of the job was Smith Landscaping's work crew. An amazing group of workers! They showed up every day at 6:45 in the morning and worked very well together. And they worked hard! They removed existing sod and about 3 inches of dirt to accommodate the pavers and decomposed granite. It was windy and cold and rainy, but they got the work done to our satisfaction. Special thanks to Serafin the lead crew member who accommodated our micro managing. We were 100% happy with the final outcome. Two other things to consider: We requested that "ramboard" be placed on top of our current decking to prevent damage and/or staining and it work very well. Also consider that these crews work hard and deserve to be tipped if you're happy with their work.

Drought tolerant front yard after two years

The quality of their work is above par, and the support is extraordinary. They go above and beyond to make sure I am consistently thrilled with my yard. They installed a drip watering system and planted all of the drought tolerant plants, which are thriving.

Turned this weed grown area in a simple rock landscape. Looks gorgeous. Curtis also brought in these boulders that give it a nice finishing touch. Super happy. Work was complete as expected. Super happy with the quality of products they used and very easy to work with. Curtis had an eye for my visón. I really only had half of it. But the rocks look amazing with grass and mulch and now heavy rain will run right to our sump pump. I would recommend for all my landscape needs.

We have completed a spectacular backyard project with Curtis and his phenomenal crew. A+++++ We have never worked with such a talented, patient, professional, and exceptional landscape contractor. Their attention to detail is beyond impressive (and we are rather particular). His prices are very fair and he is more than willing to work within your budget, big or small. He is the perfect balance of intelligent, knowledgable and fun...flexible, kind and honest and respectful. This was a big re-landscaping project and Curtis and all his crew did an EXCELLENT job and became family to us. We look forward to working with them again and again. Thank you thank you thank you!!!!!!

This review is a long time coming!…read more I first found SJR landscaping on yelp to design and landscape our entire yard in North Hollywood. Since then, I have worked with Hector and his team for years across multiple properties for many things. I have used them for: -tree trimming, tree cutting (large trees!), & stump removal -brush clearance -complete landscaping design (full grading, turf, watering systems, plants, planters, DE, etc) -hardscaping and concrete These guys really know what they are doing. They will really work with you to figure out exactly what you need. They are always thinking about how to deal with the details (drainage, plant locations, watering locations/logistics) And their quotes always come in lower than other places... Stay in touch with Hector during the process and you will be sure to get everything you need. Like I say, I've been working with them so long, they feel like family at this point! They really are a one-stop shop for everyting. That is another thing I love about them - they arent pushy. They will come out and discuss the project, give you an estimate, and won't try to strongarm you into hiring them. Its hard to find someone you can communicate with, work with, and not feel pressured. I remember the first time we hired them - all other places felt like they were pushing their ideas on us, but Hector always listened and strategized WITH us. 10/10 all around. Will be using them for as long as we need work! I wish I had more photos to share.

After my gardener replaced 3 sprinkler valves, they stopped communicating with my 5-year-old timer, which had been working perfectly. I specifically ask Chris (who says he has 40 years of experience) to check the wiring. On the first visit, he spend about 40 minutes testing and told me I needed a brand new timer. He left without fixing the exposed wires. The next day he came back, ran more tests, and determined the timer was actually fine-- the issue was simply wirings that needed to be tidied up. That means the initial 40 minutes and diagnosis were unnecessary. Total time on site over 2 days was approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes, including the time wasted on the false diagnosis. There was no digging, just wire clean up and replace one valve. Despite this, he insist on charging me for 3 full hours of labor, saying he counts travel time (even though he is 4 minutes away) The total bill was $415. The valve itself probably cost $30 or less, so the best majority of the charge was labor. Being billed for more time than actually worked -- including time spent on a misdiagnosis -- did not feel fair or transparent. I strongly recommend clarifying how labor and travel time are calculated in writing before agreeing to service.
