I had a great experience with Smith Island, baking! I recently ordered my mother a birthday cake from here, the lemon cream flavor. It was delivered by goodly, as we live in Massachusetts. The cake arrived in great condition and I received notifications throughout. Good belly was also wonderful in responding to different questions along the way. Smith Island was also great as when I gave them a call over the phone, they were very friendly and happy to assist me. Overall, I'm very happy with this company and would order from them again! We are a fan of the official state Maryland cake, and since we happened to be near by, we decided to stop in the physical bakery and see if we could bring a cake home to family and friends. Gotta say the $65 price tag for a small cake was just a tad out of my reach, so when we found out they didn't offer any slices, we had to walk away. The cakes are fantastic. I had cakes shipped to me before as gifts. They were shipped high quality. I also ate smith island cakes at local restaurants here in Maryland. It's one of my favorite cakes. I have nothing against there cakes. My review goes towards the lack of unprofessionalism when I went to go order a cake myself. I ordered my cake on Tuesday March 31st. Today is now Thursday April 2nd. I logged into my bank account to see my funds has gone from pending to been withdrawn. The total amount of $78.60 on April 1st. I ordered a oldbay cake large for $60 plus $15 shipping and Maryland tax. I got a little concerned cause I have yet to get a confirmation email of my order since March 31st. I decided to call the company this morning. I spoke with "Joy". She says the companies system has issues with gmail account. That I'm not the only who has not recieved me a confirmation email before. Ok then. Joy gives me the bad news my cake can't be shipped. She wanted to confirm with the shipping company and give me a call back. Well she did call me back and said she can't ship the cake out till Monday. I said I needed a cake on Saturday hence why I ordered to be shipped on Friday April 3rd. If you can't delivery the product I paid for on the date I need then I need a full refund. She then proceeds to call me back and say she can ship the cake. At this time I don't want it. The company went back and forth way. So if I didn't call this morning to find an update on my confirmation order. When was this company going to give me a notification my cake was not got to be shipped by tomorrow. Also having my money taken out of my account. I know this is during a COVID - 19. But there website clearly advertise they are still shipping cakes. There is no description on that cakes may be delayed due to shipping issues or anything. Cakes are good company is sly. I've been meaning to write a review for this place. It was introduced to me a few years ago by a dear friend who was ill with cancer. During his chemotherapy, he lost all appetite, except for a childhood favorite... a Smith Island Cake. I'd never heard of it. But with a little online research, I could certainly see the appeal. I decided to surprise my ailing friend with one of these delicacies, but in his adulthood, he'd developed a gluten intolerance. So, I had to find a similar item. After my friend passed away, I kept thinking about that cake. So, in an effort to feel closer to him, I ordered one of the 'original' Smith Island Cake (yellow cake with fudge frosting... 8 delicate layers!). It came frozen. It took 4 hours to thaw... and it was as delicious as any I've ever tasted. A few years later I tried their 'caramel cream' cake... soooo good!!! So, a couple of months ago I treated my boyfriend to one of their 'cooked coconut' layer cakes. He loved it! The next month my boyfriend treated me to one of their 'lemon' layer cakes. It was sublime! I'm absolutely going to keep up the tradition (in my dearly departed friend's honor) and treat my boyfriend with a new variety of Smith Island Cake... until he's had them all... and then start over! I have ordered several cakes from Smith Island Baking Co in the past and have ALWAYS been very pleased with the quality and taste of their Smith Island cakes. The original is a favorite in our house! Recently, I placed an order to be delivered at my parents house as a surprise for my mothers birthday. I accidentally put in the wrong shipping/delivery address and didn't catch my mistake until it was already in route. I called them to see if they could quickly change the delivery address but got no answer. So I left a voicemail as well as sent an email. Within in hour, Brian called me and let me know that he was able to change the deliver for the correct address. Smith Island cakes are weird and ridiculous things. But if you're gonna get one, get it from here. I grabbed a little box of Old Bay cake pops (because I didn't need a whole freaking cake). I expected them to be extra bizarre because when I think cake, old Bay is not the first match that comes to mind. But they managed a delightful balance between spicy and sweet. Never again will I order a Smith Island Cake from Smith Island Baking Co. It's sad but they fail on so many levels. My experience: On the previous Sunday I placed an order for a 9" cake and tin for a party I was hosting the following Sunday. I asked the cake to be delivered at my home on Saturday. I paid the ~$80.00 for the cake + shipping but because I paid with my business credit card- there was an issue with the cake being delivered on a Saturday. I was not notified of this until Friday, where they attempted to call me and ask me to pay more money to have it shipped by the next day. Mind you I had already paid $15.00 for shipping and handling and was never prompted or told about not being able to deliver on Saturdays. Maybe this is something I should have known about Fed Ex? I emailed and told them I was distressed about not having the cake I had order for the party. The president of the company got right back to me and told me they would ship me an additional cake whenever I wanted it. Great I thought! Two cakes! I'll get the one I order that was now, according to Fed Ex, supposed to arrive on Tuesday and a second one an a couple weeks for my Dad's 69th Birthday. I never got the first cake. The second cake came as a crumpled soggy mess. But no. The cake again had trouble getting delivered. Yes, all my complaints really stem from Fed Ex not being able to handle my order. However, if Smith Island Cake Co. needs to do a better job working with Fed Ex and it's costumers. It you want a Smith Island Cake and you live in Baltimore. The other cake (shipped on the same day as the first one but was sent to Maryland) took UPS four days to deliver. Needless to say the second cake did not arrive in perfect condition. After reaching out to Smith Island Baking Company (SIBC) about the second cake, they responded promptly and offered to make it right by shipping a new cake to my friend in Maryland. I'm amazed by all the wonderful reviews. I ordered a chocolate buttercream Smith Island cake to be delivered for my granddaughter's birthday party in Northern California. It cost $70 plus a $35 delivery fee. Based on the reviews, I expected a wonderful and special cake. What we got was something that could be described as, the way Mama used to make it. My mother was a terrible cook! So to have spent $105 for a cake that was, at best mundane, is disappointing. Based on all the great reviews I have to assume that ours came from the new chef they just hired, or was the result of a purveyor delivering sub-standard ingredients that day. Beautiful cake unfortunately only mediocre in taste and cannot even compare to a truly top notch homemade chocolate cake. I wanted to love this cake so much but in the end ended up disappointed. The reviews on Yelp are much better than people have given this same cake on other sites which pretty much feel the same as me. The only way to know is try it for yourself. Unfortunately for me I tried the best Chocolate cake I and about 15 other people had ever eaten, we all agreed hands down, about 2 years ago and I compare every cake to that one and the idiot who made it will not give out his grandma's recipe. I was searching the Internet for a cake similar to the old fashioned Merita yellow cake with many layers and fudge icing. I saw the Smith Island Baking Company listed and was intrigued by the history of the cake and according to customer reviews it sounded wonderful. I ordered one and was so excited to get it and take it with me on a weekend to the mountains with my mother who dearly loved the Merita cakes as a child. I wanted to surprise her with this cake that I felt would be just as good. BOY was I mistaken and sadly disappointed!!! This cake ended up in the trash along with my $$.
