I have 3 rescues, but my oldest, a diabetic on insulin, was 19 years old when he passed recently thanks to the awesome care they got from my heroes Valerie and the staff and Dr. Kennedy and especially for my boy with health problems. Everyone there truly loves animals and have their own, so completely understand all you may be going thru, and will work with you for the best solutions, even when finances are tough for special needs foods offering possible alternatives when they take time to research and help you. They were super friendly and our apt was in and out. No crazy parking and call the front desk and they'll come out covid garbage. We were able to go right in, and there was 0 wait. It took longer to drive there than our apt. Took. I will be moving all my animals to this vet. Oh! And last but not least they were super affordable which was just the icing on the cake! But vet tech called to say I could buy the meds directly from the vet. At a higher price than Chewy, BTW. Completely thorough with each dog....asking questions, no rushing.... made us feel very comfortable (dogs too!). Our senior dog has diabetes, so it was imperative to find a veterinarian. Our younger is a rescue with anxiety issues... not with Dr. Kennedy...we were amazed how relaxed she was with him and in the office! This is my first time writing a yelp review... We have three dogs and a cat. After moving to the area, I tried two other vets in the area and wasn't really satisfied with either. I was beginning to think it was just the way things were up here, until I decided to try Smith Flat. From the beginning, the staff was friendly and helpful. We were able to get an appointment relatively quickly. I wanted to have my temperamental small dog's teeth looked at; a previous vet told me they were fine, but something didn't seem right. My dog is, for lack of a better term, an ass. He does NOT like to be examined. This did not put off the vet at all. He took it slow and used a variety of tricks to get he job done. Sure enough, my dog had major dental issues. Long story short, the dog had the dental work done. The staff has been following up with check up phone calls, has been completely clear and helpful and has demonstrated a level of compassion and competency I hadn't seen in any other area vet. I have been very happy with our experience here and will be bringing the rest of my furry crew here as well. read more

Whether it's routine check-ups or a sick dog, Dr. Kennedy is knowledgeable, compassionate and always does a great job from start to finish. He takes the time to thoroughly examine my dogs and explains his findings to me in a manner which I understand. He gives me all the treatment options and helps me make, sometimes very difficult or complex decisions. I make an extra effort to drive 40 plus miles round trip to take my dogs to Smith Flat because it's worth it. I completely trust Dr. Kennedy and his staff with the health and well-being of all my fur babies. The fees are very reasonable and the office is clean and always accommodating to my scheduling needs. This review is long overdue, especially since the care of my dogs is of such paramount importance to me. I have been using Smith Flat vet since I moved up here a year ago (after receiving recommendations from family and other dog owners). I use them for my own dogs, and since I board and train dogs for a living, I have also had occasion to take other dogs there. Dr. Kennedy is outstanding. He is not only a very good vet, but a good communicator, and a friendly person (--to both animals and people). He never seems to mind answering my many detailed questions, or explaining things to me in a non-condescending way, or reassuring me when I'm being paranoid about my dogs' health. He speaks in a very down-to-earth and practical way, laying out options and giving honest opinions. His office is well-run, so that clients are scheduled efficiently and not overbooked, and there is rarely a wait. His staff is friendly and competent, and seem to love the animals. (You would think that would be obvious, but I've seen places where it wasn't the case.) From the routine vaccination visit to the urgent care, complex-problem visit, Smith Flat Vet has provided excellent service and care, and I wholeheartedly recommend them! read more

I had my first visit here just yesterday, 29 MAR 12, and must say I'm very pleased with the entire experience. I always loathe going to the vet, maybe moreso than my pet (a geriatric domestic shorthair cat). Over her 16 years, my kitty has been seen by a wide range of vets, some good, most not so good. Dr. Kennedy and the staff made an extremely good impression. As mentioned in other reviews, he's attentive, knowledgable, patient, friendly, personable and has a splendid bedside manner with both pets and their owners. It was obvious by watching him handle my beloved kitty during the examination that he genuinely cared, and that says a great deal. At one point he even remarked at what beautiful green eyes my cat has (yes, she is quite a pretty kitty and a charmer). He took the time to thoroughly answer my questions, and he adjusted down to "lay terms" in areas where my eyes glazed over, and it was clear I didn't understand. He also adjusted upwards too when we hit a topic where I was more knowledgable. At one point, when discussing my cat's thyroid problem, he showed me how to feel around on her throat to show me where the tumor was. I was very surprised when he did this. I've never been shown this level of hands-on consultation at the vet. I was bowled over by this level of helpfulness and informative discourse. Perhaps the best part of the visit was the bill at the end; it was about half what my previous vet in Sacramento would have charged. I'm exceedingly pleased with Smith Flat Animal Hospital, and will definitely be taking my pet here from now on. read more

We recently moved to the area and needed to establish service for our 11-yr old cat. We were so happy to see all the great reviews everyone else has posted, they truly helped us decide to call Smith Flat Animal Hospital. Right off the bat, we were extremely impressed with the staff's customer service. They helped us with an appointment, directions, and with the transfer of our cat's medical record from the place we used to take him to in Folsom. When we arrived for the appointment, we were once again pleasantly impressed with the staff's friendliness and outstanding customer service. The place was not only super clean but it looked so cute and cozy - it felt as if we were at some cabin in the mountains. We were seen on time, and got to meet Dr. Kennedy. We totally agree with everyone else's comments. He is so kind, so personable and down to earth, and so reasonable in his assessments - unlike pretty much all the other vets we've seen, who try to guilt you into having all kinds of unnecessary and expensive services done to your beloved pet. Aside from the thorough exam, Dr. Kennedy also helped us with scanning our cat's microchip and advising us on what to do in order to re-connect with the registry to update our contact info. He truly did not have to do that, so we were very impressed with his going above and beyond to help. We are absolutely happy to belong to this place and feel our cat is in great hands. Oh, and did we mention the prices are extremely reasonable? We compared the price of the exam and nail trim to what we used to pay, and they were absolutely great! Took my 8 yr old boxer girl in today and had to put her to sleep. Doctor Kennedy was as good as it gets. Compassionate handling from the minute I called them to him giving me all the pertinent data I needed right up front. I was out of town for work when my dog needed medical attention. I was able to stay out of town because my boyfriend and dad were able to take my dog to and from the animal hospital each day (thank goodness for both of them!). Reliable transportation aside, I completely trust the care that my dog receives at Smith Flat Animal Hospital. My dog had eaten a bone, eaten the whole thing; his powerful jaws ground up all the bone into sand that turned to cement in his colon; 18 inches of cement. He couldn't go to the bathroom and was in a lot of pain. Dr. Kennedy and his (fantastic) staff took care of my dog almost all week, squeezing him in between scheduled appointments and calling me anytime there was an update. He required a lot of care and he wasn't in a good mood. It was a messy job.. lots of enemas, iv's, miralaxx, main meds and chicken and rice meals. Its been a few weeks and my dog is fine, I'm confident he doesn't recall the bone induced trauma. I am so grateful for the comfort level I have with Dr. Kennedy and his staff. We have taken our pets to Smith Flat since moving here several years ago. The professionalism of not only Dr. Kennedy, but all of his staff, is outstanding. Dr. Kennedy stays up to date on all the latest issues affecting animals and effectively communicates how that affects our pets to us at each and every visit. He takes his time to make sure any questions we have are answered, and that our pet is comfortable and happy during its visit to his office. Additionally, we don't think you can find a better deal anywhere. Having a vet that gives shots, answers questions to avoid future problems, and performs quality surgeries, is much more affordable, over the life of our pets, then taking them anywhere else. Every time one of our pets has had to have a surgery, or an issue has arisen, Dr. Kennedy and his staff have consistently, without fail, followed through with phone calls and ways to limit their problem, and our costs, until our pet was well on the way to a full recovery. When I moved to Placerville six years ago, I was fortunate to have Dr. William Kennedy at Smith Flat Animal Hospital within a half mile of my house. Dr. Kennedy and his outstanding staff took excellent care of my Pomeranian mix, Jean-Luc for all those years, until I had to have him put down, at approximately 16 years of age, a few days ago. Dr. Kennedy is experienced, knowledgeable and kind. His staff is caring, efficient and on the ball, and his prices are reasonable. I especially appreciated that, about three years ago, he was more than willing to refer me to an integrative veterinarian in Sacramento who could offer additional treatment outside his scope of expertise (including Chinese herbs and acupuncture). Since then, I was able to get the best of advice from both the traditional and integrative spheres of veterinary care, and my dog greatly benefited from both. When the time came to say goodbye, Jean-Luc was put to sleep in a painless and peaceful manner. I cannot recommend Dr. Kennedy and Smith Flat Animal Hospital more highly. read more

My boyfriend and I have four cats and two dogs all rescues with trust issues. Dr. Kennedy and his staff handle them all with extreme gently care. Letting the animals take their own time to warm up. When we had to make the hard choice on our 13 year old chocolate lab they gave us the time to say good bye and allowed us to hold her as she crossed the rainbow bridge. A week later we received a card from them with her paw print, saying she would be there for us. I cried like a baby but I was really touched too. In addition, there is no pressure to choose all vaccines, and respect for individual choices for our pets' care. Today I brought in two of my pets who needed care, and Dr. Kennedy was respectful, wise, compassionate, and very helpful in providing information and explaining everything clearly and simply. If I could give 10 stars to them I would! I knew they were great from taking my own dogs in, but it was when I took my mother-in-law's dog in last week I that I truly discovered how amazing they really are! Poor little Chihuahua mix woke up unable to stand on her own. Sure she had had a stroke, I took her in with little hope she'd come home. Dr.Kennedy seemed sure it was a spinal cord injury, kept her overnight and gave her steroids. There was minor improvement by the next day, so we took her home for the weekend, still with little hope. This week she's running around like she always did. Dr. Kennedy seems like he truly loves every animal who walks through his door, and the staff there are remarkable. Everyone who has written these great reviews is right. I've only seen him once but he helped me so much. So much compassion there. My dog was completely comfortable throughout the exam. I've been to several vets lately as my dog has a skin condition that none of them can diagnose. Dr. Kennedy sent me on to a doggie dermatologist y and asked that her biopsy be re-read by a skin dermatohistopathologist. Big word! If I ever get another dog, he will be seeing Dr. Kennedy for sure. Can't recommend these guys enough. They are gentle, friendly, and everyone seems to love their jobs and the pets they care for! We have had minor emergencies with our dogs (a doxie and and an aussie) and they have been able to see them right away. Once Dr. Kennedy himself was very ill, and rather than cancelling our appointment, asked if we could come earlier so that he could see our little one. There he was, complete with a surgical mask, and did a great thorough job. And the assistants are wonderful people. You won't be disappointed! read more

Dr Kennedy always discusses all treatment options and the costs. He will go over all possible treatments and costs. Recommends starting at the least invasive treatment and then reevaluate the results. It has been my experience it normally works! The follow up appointments he doesn't over charge. In one case my bunny had surgery at UC Davis he did all the follow up exams and treatment for an infection and cut the follow up exams by 3/4! He worked with the UC surgeon over the phone and they worked together to ensure my bun healed properly. He researches and educates his patients on the issues, possible causes and all possible treatments. We have been seeing him since 2004 and I highly recommend him, he makes each patient feel like they are his favorite. He is here for your animals and NOT to make profits at the expense of his patients. His staff are always helpful, animal loving, courteous, and just as great. Give them a call! read more

Dr. Kennedy (and Dr. Prestwich before him) are both outstanding vets and outstanding people too, as are the vet techs and everyone who works there. I agree with everything the previous commenter said, never felt rushed and always know that the entire staff has my pet's best interests at heart. Over the years I have had to say goodbye to several of my beloved dogs at the hospital, which is one of the hardest things, but everyone there did thier best to help us through the hard times, and sent condolence cards afterwards. My 2 year old guinea pig was acting strangely and I went to this vet because they listed guinea pigs as one of the animals he sees. (Not just under the category of "small animals" but specifically has guinea pigs listed.) However, once he started examining my piggy he kept telling me over and over that he's no expert. He didn't know what was wrong and was giving me the impression that I should give up on my little guy. He then prescribed the max dosage on pain meds (not to mention triple the applications) and to go find some special small animal food for force feeding. After a night of meds and force feeding, he didn't get any better. Found another vet (who actually went to school for guinea pigs!) and they informed me that he prescribed TWICE the dosage of pain meds per application and that the force feeding made the blocked digestive tract worse. After some proper diagnosis, we felt we had a better chance of saving him from this second vet. I will never go back to this hospital. Their advertising is false. Sure, they will SEE your pet and get you on the hook for the $60 exam fee, but he's NO EXPERT (as he self proclaimed). read more
