Parking in Chinatown....... It's always an adventure when going into Chinatown, especially when one needs to find a place to park your vehicle. Recently, I found this public municipal parking lot to be pretty safe, as well as the parking spaces to be more spacious then the other parking spots in Chinatown. Located on Smith/Beretania Street, you must enter the parking structure off of Beretania Street, as the parking entrance is just before a little playground park. As you enter the parking structure, it is an underground parking lot. Upon exiting the parking structure, you will pop out on Pauahi Street. Like I said before, the parking spaces here are pretty spacious, which is great if you drive a large vehicle. The parking structure is relatively clean (compared to like the other parking structures near by), as I did not see, or smell any human bodily fluids which is so common in Chinatown. Aside from the one parking attendant, I did not see any security within the facility, so it's park at your own risk. I did not feel any danger parking here during the daytime, but I would be more careful to park here at night due to some sketchy folks hanging out on the sidewalk just infront of the little park on Smith Street. Parking rates are pretty reasonable for Chinatown, but it's cash only, so make sure you have cash on hand before entering the facility. read more

This parking is by far the most affordable place to park in Chinatown in my opinion. Not totally the most secure but still feels more secure than some of the open lots at street level. Sometimes their stairwell has homeless people or people doing drugs and it always smells like a bathroom...so there is that downside. But if you take the elevator that lets you out on Pauahi St. you can avoid all that smelliness. Just gotta be sure not to miss the turn down it's driveway when you're driving down S. Beretania as it is easy to miss. read more

This USED TO BE my favorite place to park while shopping in Chinatown. After all, it is the Gateway to Chinatown parking lot conveniently accessed from S.Beretania Street. It USED to be where rates were reasonable; okay cheap. Other great things about this parking lot was that the parking spaces are larger and well lit. There was a parking attendant stationed in the basement with the cars so I always felt this garage was safer. Safety is an important thing for older less agile persons! It's still a Propark parking lot. Perhaps the rates went up? I didn't bother to check the rates the last time I parked here. Imagine my surprise when I exited the now "no attendant monitoring in the basement/machine credit card only pay, increased costing parking lot and had to pay over $10 for just a little bargain shopping. Hahah. I must have shopped a lot. Spoke to the Propark phone assistant after I got home. Found out: There is a flat rate available for the day but only IF entering before 8:30am. No maximum after that unless after 5pm or on weekends. Half hourly rates apply in-between and rack up quickly! As much as a $1.50 for 30 minutes. Price break if less than 2 hours. Do miss the attendant in the garage watching over the humans and parked cars. System now completely automated and cashless. Make sure you have a credit card to pay upon exiting. I am back to searching on the streets for metered parking now. Don't care for the dark, cramped spaces of the other Chinatown lots, or, perhaps riding my bicycle to Chinatown! This parking garage is located under the Smith Beretania park, surrounded by Beretania / Nuuanu / Smith/ Pauahi streets. The only entrance is on Beretania Street, the only exit is on Pauahi street. After parking your car, you can go back to ground floor via elevator or stairs. The elevator is often graffiti-ed. If you take the stairs, it often smells like urine from the homeless that piss there. You can't take the stairs back to the garage because the outside door is locked. When you exit the parking garage, the ramp goes right onto the sidewalk, so you need to really be careful of pedestrians. Would get a one star if possible. The only places that it says it closes at 11:30PM is on a tiny LCD screen. No warning that they were going to LOCK MY VEHICLE in the garage and leave me stranded 30 minutes away from where I'm staying. Called the number on the screen and they don't answer on weekends so if you're locked up during the night, you're out of luck until morning. Side note: I pulled into the garage and parked 18 minutes after they were supposed to close and no one stopped us nor was anybody locking the place up. For as long as I been going into Downtown Honolulu, also when I've gotten my haircut at Premier Barbershop at the top of Bethel & Beretania Streets, this is my first write-up on this garage! I've been parking here for a few years, as well Chinatown Gateway Plaza. Very easy to get here. Located in the middle of Chinatown, you'll find the entrance on South Beretania Street with it's exit on Pauahi Street. It's definitely one of the most affordable parkings in Honolulu's CBD. There's also two other Chinatown Municipal Parking, one on S. Bererania & Maunakea and at Chinatown Gateway Plaza. Rates for parking are very reasonable: Mon-Fri 6am-5pm $0.75 each 1/2 hour up to 2 hours, 5pm-midnight and weekends $0.50 each 1/2 hour up to 3 hours. Lost ticket is $21. Different rates for holiday, and special events. Chinatown and Arts District is just a few steps away. It is easily accessible via a single elevator and stairs. Few positives. there is an EV charging station, wide parking stalls, and a very clean and bright facility. Few negatives, I once asked the male attendant if monthly parking is available which they don't offer, and on occasion the gate opener and ticket machine tends to break down,, You may encounter beggars as the mini park is just upstairs of the basement parking garage. Pro tip: keep your face mask on because of the street smells. This is one of the best parking structures in Chinatown, and my go-to. Entrance is on N Beretania street, you'll see the blue "Chinatown Municipal Parking" sign. The prices are reasonable, and probably the best that you'll get in Chinatown - It's $.50 on weekends per 30 minutes, and $75 cents for weekdays. It's pretty well-lit for a Chinatown structure and there's always an attendant so we feel it's the safest - plus they're always so friendly haha. There are any parking stalls, and even when things were normal, I've never seen the lot completely full, which is nice. The parking is underground so there's stairs and an elevator to take you to street-level. There are some homeless people that hang around outside the area but we've never had a problem with them. read more

As a frequent visitor to Chinatown, I previously would utilize the metered street parking but since the rates spiked 100% in February 2019 from $1.50 to $3 per hour, I sought alternatives. With multiple municipal parking structures in Chinatown, personally I find Smith & Beretania Parking (SBP) the best one. Located below street level underneath Smith, Beretania, Nuuanu and Pauahi, SBP has got to be the cleanest municipal parking structure in the Chinatown district. The stalls are spacious where a large SUV or truck can fit without hugging the lines. There is also a dedicated EV charging station that is located near the elevators. Believe it or not but SBP parking rates are cheaper than street metered parking. It is $0.75 for 30 minutes and $1.50 for the first hour. Generally speaking, I find this parking structure the least offensive smelling. Many times I don't have to hold my breath while walking through. The entrance to this lot is on the makai side of Beretania St and exits on the mauka side of Pauahi Street. Make sure to not lose your parking ticket as you will be out $21.00. There are stairwells on both Beretania St and Pauahi St sides and for those who are physically challenged, there is an elevator near Pauahi St side. So why not a 5-star rating? I pretty much park here on the weekends and holidays as they have a great flat rate of $3. However, I am baffled when I'm given my change in unnecessary small denominations. For example, the last time my change was 50 cents and the attendant gave me 4 dimes and 2 nickels. When I asked why all these small coins, the reply was "They didn't give me sufficient change." Sadly, this has happened to me multiple times. Which means, someone is not doing their job by ensuring the staff with sufficient change for their shift. Each time it was a little after 9am when I left the garage. They open at 6am. This is unacceptable in my books. When I worked in Chinatown, they also offer an Early Bird special where you pay a $12 flat rate. You had to be in by a certain time and they allot so many spots per day. It's been some time since I last parked Early Bird here so you will need to inquire directly. Overall, SBP is my go-to place to park in Chinatown. It may not be centrally located but still it is within a decent walking distance. The spacious stalls and facility cleanliness are determining factors for me. NOTES: 1) Cash only. 2) Clearance 7' 4". 3) Be careful when exiting the property. You need to go up a slope which leads you to Pauahi Street, where pedestrians are crossing. This parking lot is ONE of the conveniently located Chinatown Municipal Parking Lots in Downtown and Chinatown, Honolulu BUT, I always feel that it's the BEST one for parking during WEEKENDS and nights. Why do I consider it the best? Let's consider these facts: 1- The City & County has cleaned up the area of most of the homeless in this area (outer fringe of Downtown and Chinatown) as there are many established residential apartments and businesses within walking distance to each other. 2- There is a playground for children and nice basketball courts as its roof so there are more neighborhood patrols to keep our keiki safe. 3- The parking stalls are LARGE! No worrying about those crazy ol' Chinese ladies with their huge Cadillacs who you can barely see above the dashboards. 4- It's attached to a church and is often used by parishioners on Sundays but most drivers here are actually courteous! This might be the best municipal parking garage in Honolulu's Chinatown. My mom parks here because she said it's the cleanest. That's because it's located on the edge of Chinatown - after Nuuanu Avenue on the left and before Smith Street. The entrance is on Beretania Street. My friend likes this garage, too, because it's not only clean, but it also has wider parking stalls. I like it because of all of these reasons plus convenience and price. It even costs less on holidays, weekends, and after 5pm (50 cents per half hour)! There were some vagrants hanging around the pedestrian entrance on Pauahi Street. It seemed like they were having an argument since they were quite loud and their words were on the harsh side...haha! Just walk quickly, don't stare, and avoid interaction...lol! read more

There are several good reviews here, and this is my go-to parking structure for this side of Chinatown. Main points: * Underground parking (out of the sun!) * Headed Makai on Nu'uanu, turn right onto Beretania and be prepared to get into the left immediately to turn left into driveway * Municipal off-street rates (currently on weekends doesn't go over $3) * MUST HAVE CASH * Elevators and stairs are available but sometimes the stairs are a little stinky (less than in other garages though) * Be aware of your surroundings when you exit. I've never had a problem walking out, but if you're not used to Chinatown and the many homeless, you may be uncomfortable. * If you are at a late event MAKE SURE YOU GET YOUR CAR OUT BEFORE THE LOT CLOSES!! My GPS was not quite right, it kept pointing at another "municipal" parking (Mark's parking). The right place is next to the park. Note. My Google map showed the location address is N. Beretania. Across the entrance the street sign is S. Betetania. The sign at the entrance shows "Chinatown Municipal Parking". Ok. So far so good! Haven't had to worry about theft just yet. BUT... I DO RECOMMEND YOU TAKE ANY AND ALL VALUABLES WITH YOU! Parking rate is reasonable. There is a pay box to get your ticket from to put ONTO your dash & it's a flat rate I believe. $5 for 10 hours. PAY BEFORE YOU LEAVE THE PARKING. Car WILL MOST LIKELY GET TOWED IF THERE IS NO TICKET DISPLAYED ON THE DASH. Handicap stalls are available too. And for this... parking is ALWAYS FREE! As long as you have the placard & showing in the front window or have the license plate symbol. Some stalls ARE a bit tight, some are roomy & some are cutting it close to being scratched or scrapped by drivers passing thru. If you have a LARGE VEHICLE... you'd want to avoid parking at the end of the lanes, avoid the corners where cars turn, and try to make sure you take EVERY INCH YOU CAN when you park. Driving room isn't much. One way in... one way out. I think ENTRANCE IS ON NUUANU... EXIT IS OUT ON SMITH STREET. And you WONT SEE IT EITHER. You'll miss the turn because it's NOT a FULL SHARP TURN INTO THE LOT. It's actually more like a merge with curb leading you in. Exiting is much simpler. Other than that... this is where we ALWAYS PARK & IM HAPPY WITH THE PARKING. It's in the middle of MOSTLY EVERYTHING. Bars, clubs, theater, buildings are nearby. Actually heard about this parking structure being the cheapest in downtown Chinatown from my dad (haha) as I don't go to Chinatown often enough to know the deals for parking. However, after using this parking lot about 3 times since Covid happened, I gotta say, this place really is the place to park for any Chinatown errands. Pros: - Underground parking structure which means your car won't get super hot from the beaming sun, and there's hopefully less of a chance for theft since it's not out in the open. - Handicap parking is FREE, and if you have an electric car, you can utilize the one stall with an electric car charger for FREE too!! - The first two times I did errands with my parents in Chinatown, which lasted about 30 minutes and we paid 75 cents. The last time I went to check out a cafe with a friend and we spent about 2.5 hours, paying a total of $3. Finally had a reason to use this parking lot. It's affordable and convenient and the lot attendant is friendly, just like everyone says. My only issue is the ticket machine at the entrance of the parking lot. I pressed the button for a ticket and it sounded like the ticket was on it's way and the arm would raise any second.....but it died. Kept trying and no response. I got out and ran to the parking attendant's window at the other end of the lot and she walked over to unlock the machine and manually raised the arm. Meet downtown? Where? OMG sketchy people, scary people... However, thanks to this parking lot, I am now able to partake in the downtown food and fun and not feel unsafe, more or less. This is the parking lot I use whenever I decide to go on any of my downtown adventures. The entrance is on Beretania Street, however you exit on one of the side streets, Pauahi I believe. It is located right next to a pretty scary park, so once you exit, walk like you're on a mission. I do recommend not walking back to the parking lot alone as a female. It's pretty convenient for the downtown eating places and bars, short walking distances. The parking lot and elevator don't smell like urine. It's also pretty clean for Chinatown to be honest. The staff is really friendly as well. I asked them about parking prices and am I safe, what's the fastest route to certain places, etc. They have a great deal of $3 flat rate after 5pm, you just have to be out by midnight which is way past my bedtime anyways. However, it is exact, so you cant come in at like 4:59 or you get charged extra for that one minute. The rates are as follows: Monday - Friday: 6am-5pm $0.75 per half hour (up to 2 hours) $1.50 per half hour thereafter Monday-Friday 5pm-12am Sat, Sun & Holidays 6am-12am $0.50 per half hour $3.00 maximum fee I've had pretty good luck, always finding parking and the feeling of fearing for my life or being robbed and raped in the parking structure is minimal. read more

I often use this parking for weekend branches, weekday lunches, rarely at night. This get full quickly. This is relatively new but not much space. All about timing. I have been lucky with this parking. Entrance on Beretania between Nuuanu and Smith. Exist on Pauahi. Forgot cash and there was no mention it was needed when pulling into the garage. The attendant said I owed $2.50 (cash) so we went to an ATM to get cash and came back less than five minutes later to leave the garage. The attendant says "hello again, did you get cash" yup got your 2.50 right here, I replied. She then asks for my ticket again...which I somehow had misplaced in the 5 minute journey to go get cash. I tell her I'm not sure where I put it. She then says, "lost ticket is $21.00" with a blank and robotic stare. I look at her completely stunned...then reverse my car once again back into a stall to go looking for the ticket she had seen less than five minutes prior. Mind you this was around 10pm after seeing the symphony. Management needs to post signage prior to entering the garage that it's cash only. One of the great challenges in life is finding parking in downtown. I've spent a good portion of my life searching for parking, and sometimes the thought of having to look keeps me away. The situation was more of the same when my boyfriend Jake and I were circling the streets of downtown one Friday night -- just praying to the Parking Gods that we'd find a stall. While they didn't hand us one, they did point us in the direction of this lot! While driving down S Beretania St., seemingly defeated, we finally spotted a sign that said "$3 parking." Not bad for downtown! Not bad at all! Little did we know that was just the maximum we could end up paying on a weekend, and only spent $1 on parking after having dinner at JJ Dolan's! Talk about deals! Weekend rates are $0.50/half hour, or a maximum payment of $3. The same rates go for weekdays after 5pm too. Just make sure you're out by midnight! Street parking will always be our first choice, but when all else fails we'll be sure to have this ace of a parking garage in our back pocket. ENTRANCE: On S Beretania St. (between Nuuanu & Smith). This is my favorite parking lot in the downtown area, hands down. Quick and easy access off Beretania. It's a bit iffy on whether or not there will be an open space, but that's the situation at EVERY downtown lot that doesn't cost an arm and a leg; I've been lucky to always get a spot. Covered parking, great location, and affordable rates--all very nice, but not enough to make me want to write a Yelp! review. What makes this lot worth writing about is their attendants: there's something special about them. I can't quite put my finger on it, but they're really nice without being *too* nice, y'know? They just always seem positive; there's a really nice vibe. Oh, and the people who park there are really nice, too! Isn't that funny? Instead of rushing to be first to exit, cars will chill and take turns. All around, quality peeps, quality parking experience. :) The only two things I don't care for are the lip of the driveway at the entrance, and the speed bump before you get to the ticket dispensing machine. When I arrived the lot was full, so I pulled into a parking stall outside the entrance to type in the address of another parking garage. It was a reserved stall. There were several other reserved stalls open. The parking attendant immediately started yelling at me, and was very rude about it. I see no reason why this should have even been an issue, given that I was going to be there for literally 3 seconds to type in an address and I was NOT parking there, but even if it was, there was no reason for that attendant to be so rude. She could have politely explained the situation instead of yelling and acting hostile. Bad service. Don't recommend. Plenty of other parking for the same price around the area, so it's not worth dealing with staff. read more

We came here during the Chinatown festivities, but sadly we did not find any open stalls. Instead we were stuck for 25 minutes in a long line of traffic trying to leave, but not a single car could move because the car at the cashier either did not have cash or enough cash. Luckily for that person, another driver walked over to help the driver pay...unlucky for us...we were charged $.50 for sitting there and waiting. :( read more

I'm an HPU student and whenever I need to go to the campus for quick visit, this is my choice for parking. I always try to find street parking first, but with the limited options, you would be circling the blocks many times. Plus there is also a 2 hour limit for most parking during the afternoon. The entrance to this parking is on Beratania street right after the light for Nuuanu Ave. My usually visits to downtown are around 3 hours and it would cost $5 or under. This garage is best for short visits because the first two hours are $0.75 for every half hour, then $1.50 for every additional half hour, up until 5PM. After 5PM, it's $0.75 for every half hour, till up to $3. I've noticed so far that the worse time to park is around 10AM because the lot tends to be full. I gotta admit, there are a lot of homeless around because right above the parking garage is a park where they reside, but they are harmless. Most homeless are harmless, they are people too and just deserve respect like everyone else. Lastly, they do not accept card, so be sure to have cash with you. read more

I parked in this parking today (5/16/13) 10:58am and about 12:51pm I came up to leave and the two employees can't figure out how to open and closed the damn gate so it took them longer. Behind me there was almost 10 other cars waiting to get out. I wanted to move my car so I don't have to pay extra!! By the time they figure out it is 1.00pm so that's mean I'm over 2min...I got charge another extra $1.50 for that 2min because of them. I ask the lady why can't they just charges the $3.00 because that's their fault she said can't....which I think is a total bullshit!!!! read more
