The Happy Guesthouse is the perfect basecamp to explore Belgium…read more We spent four nights at Sophie's Happy Guesthouse in Brussels and recommend it for several reasons. First, it is conveniently located within a five minute walk of Brussels' central train station. You don't want or need to change accommodations every night. We stayed at the Happy Guesthouse for the duration of our time in Belgium while making daytrips to Bruges/ Ostend, Ghent, and Antwerp. Each is within an hour or so of the central station and the trains are regular, quick, comfortable, and reasonably priced. Second, Sophie and her staff made us very comfortable. Our room was small but it was comfortable, as was the bed. There is no elevator but that was not an issue for us. If you have concerns, request a room on a lower floor. And breakfast was consistently tasty with several options. Finally, Sophie and her staff were flexible. When we wanted to get an early start, they accommodated us by delivering breakfast to our room prior to the normal breakfast window. And when our departing flight was cancelled by Air Maroc on short notice, they accommodated us by allowing us to leave our luggage and to pick it up later in the day, after we had checked out and turned in our key. So, what more could one ask for?

You get breakfast made in the morning and dine with others together on a long table. Breakfast is from 830-10 so you still have time to sleep in. WiFi is included. While checking in you can leave your luggage and explore the city while your room is getting prepped. She will give you some suggestions on what to see and where to go. They are all easily accessible by walking. She is very friendly and so helpful.

I had the unfortunate experience of doing business with Destination Brussels. It was almost a…read moredisaster from the get-go. The apartment which I was given was not the apartment I had rented. On the website, it had said that the apartment was on the deuxieme etage, and I was somewhere on the premiere etage. I had specifically booked the deuxieme because I didn't want to have people staring into my window. The landlord was horrific. This guy arranged a rendezvous with me so that we could come over with the plumber to check on some plumbing - this was done at the request of the landlord (everything in the apartment was working fine). Not only didn't the plumber not show up, but neither did the landlord. I basically had to suffer through his curt emails and waste my entire morning for no reason whatsoever. The listing also said that it was "calme et tranquile", but in fact the back of the building abutted a playground and one must endure screaming schoolchildren in the playground seven days a week. There wasn't much recourse with the onerous contract, and Brussels Destination was relatively indifferent to the problems which arose (in fact, they didn't even change the listing on the website after I wrote of the inaccuracies of the description). brusselsdestination.be also was quite poor in communication. Response to email was sporadic. I would write an email, they would write back after fifteen minutes, but then after my response to that email, I wouldn't hear from them for days. They seem to just make their money off of exploiting foreigners, and unfortunately, I hadn't known about Airbnb when I booked the reservation, or I never would have used Destination Brussels to begin with.
