Merrifield Child Development Academy - EXCESSIVE FEES!!

My daughter attends day care between 6 and 10 hours a day, five days a week. So needless to say,…read moreshe spends a lot of time at MCDA. When we started at MCDA I immediately noticed a difference in my child from how she was at our previous day care. She was happy to go to school. She was obviously being engaged through out the day, making friends, and talking/singing/dancing to us all the things she was/is learning. They have a very structured day, and a curriculum so there are learning objectives in place. The set up of everything makes it so the kids come together for certain parts of the day (like lunch), but can go to their classrooms for age-appropriate activities. Its nice that the different age groups are not only with the same group of kids all the time. They have field trips, provide snacks twice a day, do fun theme days, have events for the parents, and have refrigerators and microwaves available for lunch time. The staff here are genuine and caring.Out of all things, it is the teachers that make MCDA the best. and they have an active new letter, which is awesome! The youngest age they accept is 16 months (when my daughter started- she's now two).

STAY AWAY!! Don't trust this place. Just gave everyone 2 week notice that their fees are going up…read more$50 a week/$200 more a month a 15% increase. Plus a yearly re-enrollment fee of $150 and a Summer Camp Activity fee of $350 for absolutely nothing. In addtion, you pay for 5 days of daycare and they close certain days for their internal staff events and leave scrambling to find another babysitter and you still have to pay them for being closed. This place is small, only have 1 bathroom, too many kids and our baby was also always getting sick here. NOT WORTH THE PRICE OR THE HEADACHE!!

Both my children have attended for the past 5-6 years, and every single year has reinforced why we chose this school in the first place. From the moment you walk in, you can feel that this is a place built around genuine care for children -- not just a place that watches them, but one that truly loves and nurtures them. The teachers are, without exaggeration, incredible. They are patient, warm, endlessly encouraging, and clearly love what they do. Our kids have always come home excited to talk about their day, which says a lot about how engaged and happy they feel in the classroom. Every teacher we've encountered over the years has treated our children as individuals, celebrating their personalities and helping them grow at their own pace. Academically and developmentally, the program is exceptionally well-rounded. The kids are exposed to a wonderful mix of cultural activities, practical life skills, and physical education, all woven into a curriculum that keeps them engaged and constantly learning. They even take French lessons, which has been such a lovely bonus and has sparked genuine curiosity in our kids about language and other cultures. The school also puts on the most adorable productions -- dance recitals, music performances -- and you can tell real time and heart goes into preparing the kids for these events. It's clear the staff wants every child to feel proud and included, regardless of skill level. It has been fun to see my children during the first one to the last one and see how they come out of their shell more too. Physical activity and outdoor time are also a big priority. The kids get to play outside frequently, including daily time outside to the nearby park, which gives them plenty of fresh air, movement, and unstructured play time -- something we really value. One thing that stands out most to us also is how seriously the school takes safety and security. Every policy and procedure feels thoughtfully designed with the children's well-being in mind, from secure drop-off and pick-up protocols to how the classrooms and outdoor spaces are supervised. As a parent, it's reassuring to know that safety isn't an afterthought here -- it's built into everything they do. This has been especially meaningful for us because our son has a food allergy. The school has been outstanding in how they manage it -- from clear communication with staff, to careful attention during snack and lunch times, to making sure substitute teachers and staff are all aware and prepared. We've never once felt anxious dropping him off, which is not something we can say about every environment he's been in. On top of all of this, communication from Mrs. Elena has been excellent throughout our entire experience. Whether it's daily updates, event reminders, or larger updates about policies or schedules, we've always felt informed and included as parents. Overall, this school has played such a meaningful role in our children's early years. I felt compelled to write this review, which I don't do often, given how awesome this school and teachers are! We are endlessly grateful for the teachers and Mrs. Elena (and Ken) for an incredible school they've built, and we would recommend this school without hesitation to any family looking for a nurturing, safe, and enriching environment for their children. My son graduates to Kindergarten at the end of August and I very sad to leave as we have grown so close!

I've never seen him adapt so quickly to a childcare center - or be so proud of his budding skills (putting shoes on, packing his book bag). We especially love the great use of the local park for their outdoor time. All the teachers are professionals and form great bonds with their students.

There are several staff who have been at Carousel for 10+ years, a few who have been there for over 20 years. Others have mentioned the lack of cosmetic updates to the facilities, however, ownership changed hands a year or two ago, and steady improvements to the facilities (new bathrooms, fresh paint) and technology (parent app, door camera and entry system) have been made since. At the end of the day, our children have thrived here, our oldest is doing well in elementary AAP classes and the youngest is nearing the end of his final year. We couldn't have been happier with the way things have gone, especially given the lower price than other nearby facilities, such as bright horizons in the inova complex. 10 years after nervously dropping off our first infant, barely 90 days old, we'd do it all over with Carousel. A deep thank you to all of the staff who work tirelessly so that our children get needed attention and care while we are off pursuing our careers. Kudos to you all.

We sent our first child to Curious Kids with Suma and happily sent our second.  We really like that…read moreSuma cooks meals for the kids (centers cater their food), and we like the smaller group size (12 kids) compared to centers.  There's a separate room with 4 cribs for the infants (under age 1) to sleep in, so the sleeping environment is better than at centers too.  Her 2 employees have been with her a long time, so there's continuity for the kids.  She also supports early potty training, so she let our daughter go without diapers at 23 months (something that many centers won't allow).   I remember that once at a Halloween party Suma threw for the kids, she said that she loved our kids like they were her own and while it made me happy to hear that, I wasn't sure I believed it.  But now that Covid-19 hit, I really do believe it.  Even after she closed, she scheduled weekly Zoom calls so the kids could see their friends.   My daughter kept asking to see Ms. Suma, and she let us come by her home and say hi (from a safe distance), and said she missed us and we could visit anytime.  These were things she didn't have to do, especially since we aren't paying her.  Ultimately, isn't that what we all want from a daycare?  Someone who will love your kids like their own?

Daily report at end of the day helps me know what my son ate and if he has napped or potty .. I did not have to worry about my sons well-being while he was at Ms Suma's. The food that Ms Suma offers is healthy with all fruits and vegetables I am happy with his nutrition while he's there .. if not for Ms Suma I would have waited forever to potty train my son.. she did train him very well so it was easier to follow Ms Suma's suggestions and get going! Overall, I am very happy about my experience with my sons language development and potty training !!
