Besides their hourly proclamation of how much they are "Happy to serve!" SM Hypermarket is pretty much your standard grocery store, which is not to demean Your Standard Grocery Store. In fact, grocery stores, and this one in particular, has saved me so many times. Because virtually everything is there. May it be from the pangs of junk food cravings to "I want to make my own salad from scratch in the office pantry" kind of afternoons, indeed SM Hypermarket has been there for me, happy to serve. Once, I even bought tank tops and tanning oil there because my flight for Boracay was already scheduled in a few hours and I had no time to do some proper shopping.
But there are two things in SM Hypermarket that stand out for me:
Their fruit slices station is the bomb. Since it is impractical to buy entire fruits when all you want is some mangoes with a few apple slices, honey dew, pineapple, a few pieces of grapes, and papaya and whatever else is in the station that day. All you gotta do is pick (and do so judiciously, I always end up filling my bowl with too much fructose), have the thing weighed and voila - your fruit bowl. The perfect lunch for the anorexic warriors in all of us.
Second is their turon! This, dare I say, is the best turon in town, which arguably makes it the best turon in the world. Which explains why they sometimes get sold out too quickly. Imagine, for only 15 bucks, you get that crisp, gooey banana and langka roll of Manila street food fame, still piping hot and fresh from the fryer. And I suspect that that's what sets this turon above all others - the fact that it was made in a proper industrial deep fryer, making a nice evenly rolled appearance with the wrapper evenly crisp and the fruity inside so soft and tender - an explosion of the right sweetness. Okay, I shall end here before I start sounding like a stalker. read more
