I called and explained the scope of work. Chago said he could do the work and asked me where we were located. I asked him how much he charges and he didn't answer me. He asked me where we were located. I gave him our specific street + told him we were "near Santa Monica". I also gave him 2 different cross streets at his request, and he started correcting me and telling me "that's not near Santa Monica, that IS Santa Monica". Chago came to my place several times over three weeks for some renovation work. He always was prompt, friendly, efficient and a real jack of all trades. He tested my electrical sockets. He did a beautiful job repainting portions of my place (and matching the paint precisely). He installed a new bathroom fan and light. It was a complex job involving widening the existing space, and working with an array of power lines and water hoses. He also transformed my bar area by measuring, ordering and installing mirrors directly below and inside my liquor cabinet. Chago helped with a blind installation that I had been struggling with for several months. He came on time, moved quickly, and gave me great advice when I tried to hang up some blinds in another room. I was thinking that he could become a regular handyman for me. However, the reason I'm not rating him higher is that he agreed to come another day to do work and then didn't show up. When I called him, he said he couldn't come at the time we had discussed and that I hadn't spoke to him directly (although we had discussed the time in person during his last job, and I had left a confirmatory voicemail). Chago is an outstanding handyman skilled in many facets of condo rental and wear & tear. He is a true blessings to property owners. I had a laundry list of things that needed to be fixed or troubleshooted and he glided through the issues with ease. He figured out a complicated electrical, gfci outlet failing. I have a European washer/dryer and he fixed the issue without having to call an appliance repair person. He helped with making an oversized, newly delivered fridge fit. I thought I needed to replace the garbage disposal and who knew, he just adjusted a bolt that locked up the blades. Yippie! Chago has a lot of integrity and is a complete sweetheart. Nick did a great job hanging some things for me - including some difficult hammock chairs in a cement ceiling. He noticed that I take my shoes off indoors, and took his off without me asking. NO ONE has ever done that before -- I really appreciated that. Very affordable and flexible - unlike some of the larger handyman companies i called before finding Chago's service. Update, one year later - thanks again Chago, for installing the sleeper in the sofa, fixing the ikea wardrobe doors, making the old storage cube look new again, and even potting some plants. I called Chago on a Thursday afternoon asking about his availability to help hang two pieces of artwork; even though the long weekend was about to start, he made time the following day to come by and assist with hanging the pieces. He was extremely professional and knowledgeable and made good suggestions about the positioning of the frames. In fact, given the spacing of the beams behind my walls, he had to re-adjust the fixtures on the back of the artwork and he did so for no charge and without complaint. Chago's rates are extremely reasonable (I was quoted nearly 3x what he charged by a "professional") and all in all, he is just a good dude. Having just moved into the area, I know there will be additional projects for which I will need his assistance in the future as I settle in. One last note - it is unfortunate that people don't understand how Yelp works and give small business owners one star for experiences that may not have lived up to unreasonably high expectations. At bottom, small business owners providing services (like SM Handyman) depend on Yelp for their livelihood - one star is not appropriate for "slow" work -- rather, it is for when the person did not show up, the work not getting done, damage being caused or the work getting done in a shoddy manner. The fact that there is a personality conflict is NOT appropriate for effectively gutting someone's livelihood. read more

Bad experience with this business on Sunday. I could not remove toilet seats in my condo so I called this guy. I think he knew from the beginning that he wouldn't be able to either, but he decided it was an easy way to rob someone of $50! To make a long story short, he made the situation way worse than it was: I just wanted to change two toilets seats, but he left me with broken seats. I actually asked if I owed him and he said I did! And he actually cashed my check! And he the one who insisted he could get the job done! Disgusted that someone would take advantage like that. read more
