Slums serve 'street food'. Although I'm not sure how authentic, since I've never eaten street food before. Regardless, I can vouch for the fact that it's delicious, fresh food.
I will point out that Slums is a takeaway with a few seats and definitely not a restaurant, despite what their website states. I've known about this takeaway for quite a while, but the name 'Slums' was off putting, so bypassed it for ages. However I heard good reviews and was curious, so tried it yesterday.
It's the standard burrito bar format of wrap, bowl or salad filled with rice, meats, sauces etc but with an Indian slant. Initially I was surprised that there were only meats on their menu. I asked and was told by the Lady behind the counter that they also offered paneer and an Aloo Tikka spiced potato filling. I ordered a bowl of coconut rice, paneer, masala sauce, salad, chickpeas and chutneys - spicy scrumptiousness! The portion was generous and cost £5.50.
I'll definitely be returning to Slums as the food's fabulous and staff helpful - I didn't have a clue what to order on my first visit and asked what every single menu item was and how spicy! My only gripes are the lack of prominence of vegetarian options on the in-store menu and uncomfortable 'seating' of skinny benches. Great food though. read more
