Nothing about it is "phoned in". The puzzles fit the theme perfectly, using tons of authentic props that never break the immersion of the setting. The puzzles are all really clever conceptually and in execution, without ever being frustrating. And the really unique hint system helps you out if you're stuck without ever breaking the fourth wall. First and foremost, the whole team working there are so beyond awesome, they all give the vibe that they love their job (I hope they do), super energetic/fun and patient for all the clues that we ask for. We are always blown away by the amount of effort put into the rooms themselves and these guys really go above and beyond, fully putting you in the experiences. We did the ancient curse which was fun and straight forward for the most part. The next day we came back and did a harder one: room 057. This one actually broke our "5-win streak" because we couldn't complete it. It's differently tricky but mostly because we hadn't seen the puzzles they used in it before but it was fun. They actually put in something very unique (and personal) in room 057 than any other escape room we've done (not giving any spoilers) which was super cool of them to do an extra step to have us really think. We also loved how at the end of room 057 when the time was up and we didn't finish it, the girl came in and walked us through what we couldn't get. I think the *only* thing was that the walkie talkies they use were sometimes staticky and we felt bad having the team repeat themselves. Overall, would definitely come back again if we visit Calgary.

Puzzle # 1 - What the heck is an Esxoss Manway? Puzzle # 2 - How do I even pronounce Esxoss? And S into an X? My tongue is confused! Boasting itself as Calgary's Only High Tech Escape room, Esxoss Manway incorporated some very cool multimedia tech into the room. The story line for the Inception (not actually Inception) room was more elaborate than I've ever seen in an escape room. It was really cool to see, but at the same time it would take some really intense script writing to get this thing to make sense. I keep referring to Inception, so I might as well keep with the example - if you've seen the movie, you may very well have been left with a strong feeling of "what in the #@*! even happened?!" Well, you're onto something because the same goes for this puzzle room. It was fun and very bold that they tried to take it to a level past "Hey, you! Escape this room!" and incorporate a full on murder mystery, but in practice I'm not really sure it added to much to the experience. I've played some basic plot lines with very creative puzzles, but this room was kind of the opposite. There were some very interactive features that are exciting and well thought out. At the same time, there were some puzzles that I felt missed the mark. It wasn't even a case of us not being able to solve them, but there were some definite leaps of faith along the way, and a few clues that were a pretty big stretch. If you're down with math, Esxoss Manway will be your jam, there's quite a bit of it. Don't be surprised to find yourself self writing number down and doing some good ol' fashioned long division. When the calculations get really hard, however, they might hook you up with a calculator. Not a spoiler! Or is it?! NO, it's not... Or.. is it?! Go and find out!

Once you experience Escape Hour, you can really see what sets them apart from the rest. This place strives to give you more than just a bunch of puzzles and a room you are locked into for an hour. Here you get the full experience, as they really push the thematic nature of each room. Everything from the decor and story, right down to the period specific, functional antiques that you must use to complete some of the puzzles. Another thing that sets them apart (and the biggest part in my opinion) is that none of the rooms are linear, you can start on any puzzle you choose and end anywhere you choose. You don't need to find the "first" puzzle which gives you the answer to the second puzzle and so on. If you get stuck on any of the puzzles, there is no break in the experience where you push a cheat button to get someone to come in and show you how to do it, instead they coach you through any difficult parts giving you just enough help to complete it without giving it away. Now this is not just one person sitting back reading a book waiting for a button in any room to be pushed. There is a dedicated host to each group that can see and hear everything going on in the rooms and communicate hints and tips through a TV screen in the room. This way they can give you help or hinder your progress, thus tailoring the difficulty to your group. They will not give too much help and spoil your experience, but they also won't leave you frustrated if you can't pass a challenge. One thing I should point out is that this is by appointment. You must book a room. However, they will accommodate pretty much any time 24 hours a day. We finished up just prior to a group coming in at 2am for a work party that deals with the graveyard shift. Yes, they cater to individuals, and corporate office parties alike. I'd like to say a bunch more, but it would give too much away. Needless to say, GO CHECK THEM OUT!

There are a lot of different escape rooms in Calgary. You can find their posters on community…read moreboards in Starbucks or hear about them on the radio, but if you want a true escape room experience ignore all those advertisements and go with the best. Most escape rooms will make things harder by making you work in the dark with a flashlight. Most escape rooms will give you a buzzer or button to call in an attendant to help you if you get stuck. You won't find any of that cheap, time-stealing nonsense here. You want it harder? Escape Hour gives you more challenging puzzles and more of them. You want help? There's a dedicated staff member watching and listening in and if you need help they will put hints on a tv display in the room for you to use (or ignore as we did most of the time) rather than coming into the room, disrupting your experience and not knowing what stage you're at before they help you. This means you don't lose time, you get immersed in the experience, and the best part? They will never give you the answer, just hints to help you figure it out for yourself. They have four rooms that rotate in theme and when we went, and will be for a few months still: -The Lost Jewel of Zanzibar (african safari) -The Curse of the Evil Genie (arabian nights) -Prohibition - the Lucky Duck (speakeasy) -Cypherspace (interstellar) I did the Zanzibar one. The rooms are amazing, with authentic antiques and period items fitting each theme. They are all based on true stories, and are so much fun that you can't help but dive into it. When we went into our room the door closed and we just scattered. It was so much fun, I can't wait to do the other three themes! The puzzles and setup is great for all ages and experience levels. With the different themes and difficulty levels, Escape Hour rooms are great for families, professional groups, or just having fun for an hour. The staff are friendly and you can tell they care about the experience with the dedication and quality put into the rooms. If you want the best escape room in the city go to Escape Hour.
