I have a friend who is addicted to Escape Rooms. She has organised groups of us to play at a couple locations but this was my first time doing an escape room at Exit. Check in was a little disorganised. Really feel like they need another member of staff. Kind of get rushed through orientation and thrown in a room. Thankfully this wasn't our first rodeo and knew what was what with most of the locks so weren't worried we would never make them work. Have to think that during busy times its a bit like chaos at check in if it was this disorganised when there was only really 2 groups spaced apart going in. We did the Egypt escape room. It was actually pretty easy to get most of the clues and we moved through the room fairly quickly. Right up until the black light incident that is. Had to get help on that one and staff told us afterwards they have a hard time with getting the black-light paint to stay. If you paint it on, then teams can see it even without the black-light but if the keep applying it it fades every hour just a little more. An issue they are looking to work out and appreciated them letting us know that at the end. Nice that you can book in advance and pay separately when you get there. Not something that always happens. Will be excited to try their other rooms. Also like that they have a little tea/coffee shop there so you can have a beverage if your early and waiting for your turn. read more

I couldn't sleep well for a week prior to our visit due to anticipation. I knew it was going to change my life. And it did. I am now addicted to this place. I am going to play and finish every room here. The staff are very knowledgeable and helpful. Overall, it was a super awesome experience. I've been here with friends a couple of times now to do the shipwreck and prison escape rooms. Both times it was an absolute blast! The rooms are very well put together and the puzzles are both challenging and creative. There's plenty of objects and clues for people to interact with so even in small rooms you're not treading on each others feet too much. The staff are fantastic, especially the lovely Australian lass. They're very helpful when giving clues and provide a lot of subtle hints as well a little leeway for time if they're feeling generous ;-) Would highly recommend coming here, and will definitely be revisiting. This was my first time trying an escape/breakout room, and I thought that Exit did a great job! We had two groups of 6, and were booked in on a Sunday evening. The guy and gal working there were both really great - enthusiastic and helpful. Everything was explained very clearly. My group had the Ninja room. There were 2 people in our group who had been to different breakout places before, and we all made it out with about 10 minutes to spare. The staff were really great with the hints. They helped us figure stuff out when needed, but if they didn't actually give us a clue, it didn't count as a hint (you only get 2 hint cards to use). Overall this was a great experience. This was my first time at Exit and 3rd escape room. I had previously tried the locked room and also Level 1. Compared to the other two, this facility is very nice and well put together. Finding the place is a little challenging, but an easy phone call revealed it was in the basement under the Good Life. The employee Josh, running the place late night on a Sunday, was very helpful on the phone as well as in person. We were a walk in group of 7 and josh helped to explain the process and the different rooms. We were told that Ancient Egypt, Ninja House and the Lost Ship have 35%, 30%, and 15% success rates respectively. We went with Ninja house and was given the story with nice enthusiasm and clarity. Once started we found the first room of the 3 in Ninja House quite difficult because none of the clues were adding up for us. After about 8 minutes. Josh came in on his own to give us a head start and clued us in that the puzzles are more visual than anything else. This helped us immensely and we were able to continue onto the second and third room. The puzzles were quite difficult but very doable with the right mind set. We ended up requesting a real hint in the last room but were able to use it to solve the rest of the puzzles and escape the room with 11 minutes to spare. Based on this one time experience, I would definitely recommend Exit Calgary to anyone else. If it is your first time doing an escape room I suggest picking something with at least a 30% success rate since it's better to give yourself a chance to win than to come out frustrated. Also be very careful in this part of town late at night time. There were quite a few sketchy and drunk/drugged people on the street. read more

We did a double header on a Sunday just the two of us. Unfortunately two people aren't really enough to get through a 3 star room even with plenty of experience with escape rooms but we got very close both times. We tried Tokyo and Egypt. Tokyo was the best of the two but it is harder than they say. Both rooms had amazing decor that I really enjoyed and the pixels are cleaver. Some escape rooms have more magic or technology but exit seems solid and well decorated location that gets you into the story. read more

Came here on a busy Saturday and had booked for me and 5 friends to do the Prison Escape room. As we came in, the lobby was stunning - the best I've seen in any escape room across Canada. We approached the desk and an Australian girl (can't remember her name) was very polite and smiley when checking us in. She informed us that since we had not completed any of the other rooms at Exit that we should do one of their easier rooms and not take on Prison's 5% escape rate. Since we had been to so many escape rooms between us prior to this, we took the plunge and did it regardless. It began to get busy and a guy named Joey gave us a brief lock tutorial and talked us through the game. He was really funny when doing so and walked us to our room. He told us a story of a POW war camp and that we were being held hostage by a madman tour guide - the story was done with impeccable comic timing and was actually quite dark (not for kids!) I liked this aspect as other escape rooms I have been to are very hasty when telling the story and do not set a scene at all whereas we were genuinely quite nervous. He handcuffed us in pairs but because there were 5 of us, I offered to be cuffed by myself. He told me that the tour guide didn't like the look of my face so told me he was cuffing me behind my back and he took me into the cell first, took my flashlight off of me and walked out of the room, leaving me in darkness. My friends told me later that he explained to them outside that he was just doing this to scare me - it worked! The noises and atmosphere in that room is really creepy! He led the rest of my team in and put them in the other cell to me (this guy really acted that he didn't like me - all part of the act of course/I hope!) He explained the rules and told us that there was an emergency key in case we freaked out or something happened, which made me feel very safe that we were in the hands of professionals. Then he left us to it and walked out of the room. Obviously I don't want to give anything away but it really is an incredibly atmospheric room and genuniely creepy. One of the rooms is extremely gory as well so anyone with a weak stomach need not apply! The puzzles were brilliantly organized and the hints given were awesome. Joey even burst through the door shouting in order to scare the girls in the group and it definitely worked! It made us want to move faster to make sure he didn't come back in again and we were afraid to push the button for help! It was a jarring but very fitting experience and made us feel like we were in a horror movie! Needless to say, we didn't complete the room (they weren't kidding when they said it was difficult) and the cute Australian girl came in to tell us our time was up and that we had all been killed by the madman! By the time we had come out to the lobby, it was packed with people wanting to go into the same room that we had just come out of and we were told not to give anything away. We were about to leave when the Australian girl told us that if we had time, the Lost Ship was free for an hour if we wanted to challenge ourselves again...so guess what, we did it! Admittedly, it was a little bit easier than the Prison Escape but not by much! Still, an amazingly atmpspheric room and the Aussie girl's story was not as intense as Joey's but still entertaining and weirdly adorable (think I have a crush! aahah) We got loads of photos in the lobby and all of us agreed that this was the best night out we had had out in YYC in a long time! Thank you Exit and the staff for a great night, cannot wait to return and do their new room in August which - being sci-fi fans - sounds awesome! read more

My first time doing an escape room and it was so much fun! The clues are all there for you and there's nothing tricky or sneaky, but it does get you to think outside the box... a lot! My group and I did the Egyptian room and we managed to escape in time but did have to use both of our hints. Fun, challenging and the staff were so friendly and helpful! I have done over 6 escape rooms in Calgary and I think this one is the worst one. My friends and I played different rooms and we felt that the rooms were lacking in creativity. We're all escape room fans and we left disappointed. The rooms were not interactive enough and the puzzles were boring compared to the other escape rooms in Calgary. I felt like they were understaffed and they could definitely improve on their customer service. When we used the hint, the employee was rude and just gave us the answer, instead of hints.(Blond haired employee.) She acted like she didn't care and wanted us to leave because it was busy. They did not talk to us after to get feedback or anything and just left us standing in the lobby. After like 15 minutes, another employee with a better attitude came and took a picture for us. I think Exit needs to replace or train this particular blond employee. Since there are so many escape rooms in Calgary, I recommend trying the other ones first before this one. read more

I booked one room at exit for four people and one room at level one escape for six people to compare the play with more people and different companies approaches. I looked exit up online and they boasted a very low completion rate on their rooms, which suggested that the puzzles would be rather difficult. I was excited since I do puzzles almost every single day. I also looked them up on Yelp as I do every business to get an idea of the good and bad things I should watch for and try. I was booking the Egypt room which had a lot of complaints about a black light issue on one of the puzzles. I called ahead to make sure this issue would be not come up. I was told this would NOT be an issue and had not been for months. At the counter their were no other people and it was very peaceful. The guy didn't seem too into his job and rushed through his talk about the locks and the rules. We were given two flashlights between four of us to take in a pitch black room. He told us our backstory at a speed hardly called language and left us in the room. In the first room we did work together and work slowly and do each puzzle one at a time and it only took seven mins to get through the next door to the second room. The clues were not too hard but also not at all part of a story or all that Egyptian. Once through the door I'm not sure if the fact that I got most of the puzzle answers on the other side or that my suggestion to go slow and work together had worked and he was wrong about chaos being fine but he started picking up everything and calling out everything which the other two also did and the whole thing went downhill from there. Everything that was able to be moved in the room was set in the middle and it was chaos. Not knowing where things came from or what order they were found in plus having so much to figure out wasted a good ten mins. We had to use a clue because too much was going on. Once we got going I started figuring out some of the puzzles again but a lot of time had past. Also shortly after we had past into the second room one of the flashlights had stopped working. I was pretty mad because one flashlight between four people in pitch-black is soooooo slow. After we opened a few boxes we had a black light so at least we kind of had some help. We got stuck again because the black light was not showing anything(was what the guys told me). I was doing a really long translation puzzle in the other room and they still hadn't figured out the blacklight. The blacklight puzzle and the translation puzzle I was doing would get us to our last puzzle and out the door. We had five mins left so they called for the clue guy. I didn't need him to help me with my puzzle and when he asked where we were I told him that I was just finishing mine but the blacklight wasn't working. So he wastes almost a min having me explain how I got my answer for my puzzle and then waits till we open our box which is another min before he goes into the other room and shows them where the blacklight SHOULD be showing up. Now I couldn't read it and the guy who was holding the blacklight on my team couldn't see it. The clue guy had to walk really close and point where it was and tell us what it said which none of us saw. He then quickly walked to the box it would open and told us the last few steps to get out. Which let the last two mins run out. Now I mentioned earlier that I called and asked about the blacklight issue because I saw it in reviews on Yelp. They PROMISED me it hasn't been an issue in months. If I had not been told to leave my phone locked up I would have taken a pic of a wall with a blacklight showing nothing on it. Considering how much money they make you should not run out of battery on your flashlight and an issue they have known about for months should be fixed. Also level one escape had blacklight paint and it was very, very bright and you could only see it with the blacklight. So why couldn't Exit? Exit may have nicer props and spent more money on their facilities but the puzzles are poor, they do not relate to the theme well and their is no story to follow. The completion rate is so low because of the amount of issues, shady clue givers(that waste time and ignore mistakes) and very badly made puzzles. I am more than willing to give them a second chance and maybe even make this a regular thing as I loved the concept and did enjoy some of it. However due to the cost they need to assure me the issues are fixed and make up for the experience that I paid for already. They should have offered a free visit or a coupon or something for what happened when I was there. It's just good business. For right now I suggest level one escape over this place. They give a much better experience for your money and put way more effort into story with the puzzles. I might change my review later if I try them again and they are better but someone else would have to be paying because in not wasting my money on a broken room. read more

My friends and I have started a so called escape room team where we go all over trying different rooms. We first went to one in Vancouver two years ago and wished for some to pop up in calgary. With all the different locations popping up, I would say exit is our favourites. We have been to the Ancient Egypt and Prison Escape rooms at the location so far. The rooms were well planned and each problem flowed nicely into the next, and there was a good mix of problems and puzzles. The thing that made this location our favourite isn't just that the rooms were great and well decorated but it was the nice little tea shop with board games on the side. The tea shop had a awesome little VR room that really tied the experience together. read more

X-17 was a massive disappointment, the fact our game master was pushing the notion this room has a ton of replay value was a red flag for me. If you design the room that requires two play throughs - shame on you Exit. I won't be return playing this room, I enjoyed your other rooms and would recommend those over X-17. read more

Was very understaffed, particularly for a weekend. Credit to the one staff member there, but rooms were running behind and not completely reset. Having been to a bunch of different escape rooms companies in Calgary, was not impressed with the pirate room. A couple aspects of the puzzles were clever, but others were just obtuse - if you don't see something abstract the exact way that the creator did, good luck solving it. Also relied on flashlight use to slow you down, which didn't add anything to the actual puzzles, just getting blinded every few minutes. The lobby/entry to the premises were well done, but in the room the decor and props were underwhelming. Backstory was minimal, rushed, and done better by other escape rooms. Overall, unlikely to go back. read more

Took my sister who was visiting from out of town for something to do. We didn't reserve, we just showed up. Got in within 15 minutes. Friendly staff and clean environment. We had to ask for clues a few times as we definitely over thought it and missed some easy clues. We managed to get out right at the 60 minute mark so we felt pretty good. Overall I would recommend it and I'll go again. read more

Was quite pleased with the experience, all told. Checking in was good, very few people mid-week so it was great. The price was a bit much, but not so far so as to avoid trying it out, especially given the variety of difficultly across the rooms. The room and puzzles were better than I had expected, though rather linear (find this, solve this, find next bit, solve it, next bit, solve...) but it does make you think outside of the box and was rather therein rather enjoyable. Some of the visual puzzles (those that involved lasers or dark lights) did not work as well as expected, so yeah, take those slow. Plan to go again, for sure. Was a fun 1 hour team-building exercise with friends and rather enjoyable if you love puzzles! read more

Our group tried the Tokyo room here, we didn't quite break the record time but we still managed to get out in time. The puzzles are hard, but not too hard, and it felt really great each time we solved one. The staff are amazing, always fun to talk to and make this my favorite escape room to come to, that's really what keeps me coming back to this particular place. I've gone to Escape Calgary numerous times with different friends and every time, everyone leaves telling me that Exit Calgary was very fun and I couldn't agree more.
