We were planning on doing something else, but decided to stay in the C-U area so we didn't get to the market until 11:30, they close at noon. Some vendors were packing up and some sold most of their goods. Since we weren't planning on going to the farmer's market, I had already purchased a bunch of produce and meat for her at Whole Foods. I wish I hadn't. The produce at this market looked so good. They had good amount of produce and meat vendors. Prices seemed very reasonable. They had vendors that sold baked goods, jewelry, bags, soap, etc. The downside for students is the distance from campus and hours. I told my daughter she should coax a friend with a car to go with her. We were hungry and decided to check out a food truck. I don't know if there are usually more food trucks, but there were only 2 when we were there. The home football game may have effected the number of trucks. We chose Piato. I opted to try the farmers breakfast sandwich and my daughter tried the Carolina pulled pork sandwich. She wanted biscuits and gravy, but the ran out of biscuits. I enjoyed my sandwich. It was on sourdough bread, fried egg, cheddar and sausage. I liked it wasn't greasy. My daughter enjoyed the pulled pork. She even liked the cole slaw that came on top of the sandwich. She chose the bourbon sugar bbq sauce and said it was really good. We also got a fresh squeezed lemonade. We didn't enjoy that as much. We think it may have been sweetened with stevia. It had a weird aftertaste which is why we think it wasn't sugar. We don't like stevia. All in all, would definitely eat here again. Reasonable prices and friendly service!

Some weeks have a theme (e.g. dog day), so be sure to check out their Facebook page. The Bloomington PD are usually in attendance handing out stickers to kids and having a good time. One week, the market made a dish incorporating many vendors' products (Filipino Pancit) and was handing it our for free. Some vendors have free samples for you to try (shout out to Huelskoetter Farms and Joe Joe's house dressing). And there's live musician or band is usually playing in the town sqaure. Some vendors sell out early on a weekly basis, so it may be worth going early to see all the products and produce available. Plus, you're by all the small shops and stores in Downtown Bloomington (e.g. Coffee hound, Ivy Lane Bakery, Common Ground grocery, etc). Furthermore, parking is sually a breeze. You can sometimes find street parking, but there's also the parking garage that's a 2-5 minute walk to the heart of the action. The Farmers Market is worth a visit, and may even become a weekly tradition for you and your family.

Customer for over 30 years. There are other garden centers here in Decatur of course. I return here…read moreevery year as I have grown to know the employees who work there every season. I read one of the older reviews about the person who felt racially alienated by one of the owners. There are only two people who own the business that I know of. One is male and one is female. If the lady followed you around did you think she may have been wondering what it was that you were looking for to help you? I doubt anything else was going on. These are down to earth good hearted salt of the earth people. They have a beautiful assortment of the best plants around here. They do a great business there, why? They couldn't be in business THIS LONG if they treated people poorly, ANY PEOPLE. I've seen ALL kinds of people in there over the years. I LOVE going to the garden center every year. I often go multiple times during the growing season ( April thru September) and probably spend more than I should, but gardening is my passion as one of the other reviews mentioned. The plants are very healthy with an abundant variety. They take great care of them while they are at the nursery. I feel like a kid in a candy store when I get there. I sometimes can spend an entire afternoon there planning what I want to put in my flower pots for the current season and what new attraction I can add to "MY" sanctuary in my little patch of land at home. Know that they also have a whole section dedicated to pots, statues and ornamental figures that you WILL NOT find anywhere in town. I am adding my second LARGE statue this year. You can call it my birthday gift to myself. I simply can't wait to get it home. Be warned! These are truly concrete and need special handling and transport to bring them home but gosh, they are worth it! Happy Gardening! PS: Yes! I too remember when they sold fruits and vegetables and as a much smaller variety of plants. I would go there just to get the fresh produce! What a great trip down memory lane!

Lingley Brother's Sweetcorn

Lingley Brother's Sweetcorn

July through September is a special time in East Central Illinois--it's when the sweetcorn ripens…read more Pretty much all the corn-on-the-cob you eat is sweetcorn, but as any serious corn connoisseur knows there are major differences among the ears of corn that you might eat on any given day. That pathetic, bland, starchy slightly chewy corn that you usually get from the grocery store is as far away from a real corn experience as you can be and still be eating the yellow stuff. There is something magical about day-fresh sweetcorn (that's corn that goes from stalk to pot in less than 24 hours). It can be boiled, blanched, roasted or grilled. It requires no butter or salt--the corn itself has a buttery flavor and is a touch salty (it tastes like what we are trying to replicate when we slather butter and salt on third-tier ears). It has a flavor and a texture that is unmatched. In fact, many people who are regularly able to get their hands on day-fresh corn will refuse to eat anything else. In Vermilion County, there's no better place to pick up fresh, locally grown sweetcorn than on of the Lingley Brother's stands that dot the county. These folks will pitch tents in parking lots and sell ears of corn out of the back of pickup trucks. Talk to the guys that are selling the corn--they'll let you know the inside scoop about when and where the corn was picked, when to expect there to be day-fresh corn through (I got to hear the sweetest of all sweetcorn sentences today--"we expect to have fresh until the first hard frost"). And at about $0.25 per ear this is one of the best food deals you will find anywhere. The Lingley Brothers know their corn. Find them at the following locations: Downtown Hoopeston - N. side of Main Street beween Rentway and Loraine Theater 119 Intersection - S. of Rossville at the intersection of IL Rt. 1 and Rt 136 Gutterridge Harley-Davidson - Tilton s. of Danville on IL Rt. 1 (Georgetown Road) Danville Farmers Market - N. of the Courthouse Annex on N.
