This hotel is located in the heart of downtown inside the original RJR building. The front desk staff are all professional, friendly and kind, each encounter with desk staff was exceptional. Valet parking is the only real option, unless you want to drive around looking for a limited parking spot. All of the valet team are professional, courteous and timely each went above and beyond for us. Very comfortable accommodations. We stayed in a king room the first time for a weekend and a king suite for the weeks stay. Both are comfortable, the suite's size and separate seating area definitely make it worth the difference if your stay is extended. King bed, very comfortable, quality linens, very quiet soundproofing with high ceilings and heavy drapery with modern minimalist wall decor. The bathrooms in both are nice the suite, another level of comfort. Walk in large shower with a vessel tub within the shower enclosure. This hotel is one of the higher end in town, it trys to hit those marks. Better than most. 4 Stars rounded up a full star for the steller staff here from the front desk, to valet team, housekeeping and room service everyone makes your stay here better. 01150

A very high price point that does not live up to its reputation…read more We noticed multiple design feature that were simply awkward and not up to its purported level. Like the shower door positioned so you could not turn the shower on without getting soaked: a cold surprise every morning. It also seemed like profits are prioritized over good service. For example, there is nowhere you can get the usual incidentals of eating and drinking, but instead are channeled to the restaurant. But in the restaurant, as elsewhere, you discover the typical profit milking that all places have, but substandard service, as if they cut costs in personnel to increase their profit margin. Want caffeine in the morning? You need to go to the restaurant, with the time it takes, inflated prices, and substandard service, or venture out into a downtown area that is decidedly dicey. (The bus station is located only two blocks away and it is like every other bus station I've ever seen: don't go near it after dark and it's sketchy even in the morning.) It is clear the restaurant staff have had no training. During flu season, the server will deliver your water carafe with their hand around the lip where you will pour the water. Ditto with silverware: watching hand gripping the surface that will touch my food. Also, I ordered a two-egg omelet and a bowl of berries, listed as $6 each on the a la carte menu: $12. I was served and charged for the full 3-egg omelet plate (plus greens and potatoes) and a bowl of berries, at $17 and $6: $23. The first day I thought it was a simple mistake but it happened the next day. Just price gouging through markups. We were in town for a death in the family and coincided with a major local conference. So we were half at the Kimpton and half at the nearby Hampton, with its generic breakfast and architecture. But you know what? Both my wife and I agreed that Hampton would have been an easier and better stay. We just rolled downstairs for some caffeine and fuel to start the day. Things worked better, we didn't have the long wait and risk of getting ill, and nobody was trying to upsell us: overtly or covertly. Easy choice. Oh, and I stayed in a Kimpton a couple years back, in Cambridge, MA. MUCH better. There's something wrong here. Or maybe Private Equity bought the company and they are doing what private equity does to everything: platform decay because of squeezing profits for shareholders. That's my hypothesis. I'm sticking with it. And maybe it did serve as a template for the Empire State Building and maybe it did not. Who cares? It's overly dark inside and we can't see things. AND, to top it all off, we were awakened before 6:30 one morning by a fire alarm. We all piled out in the pre-dawn cold. So another dubious first: first hotel where I've ever experienced a fire alarm.

Chosen family- John has been family to the brides side since before she was born. We arrived at 3pm on a cool, fall Saturday in November. The grounds beg to be explored, the history of the house has secrets in her stairwells and rooms. The architecture breathtaking. We waited by the koi pond until it was time to take our seats in the lower garden for the ceremony. Cocktail hour was outside as well and the temperature was dropping. We couldn't wait to get inside for dinner. Well- it wasn't much warmer indoors. The dining area was split between two rooms, one of which was a sun room- all glass doors around the room. The interior room had a giant fireplace blazing in the center. We sat in the outer room- my shawl stayed on throughout dinner. I wore fleece leggings under my gown because I am always cold, but even that wasn't enough. The staff! They wowed me- from escorting guest to the powder rooms (clear on the other side of the house), to the bartenders making drinks the whole night, to the servers working our side of the dining room. Every member of the staff was beyond helpful and friendly. Amanda and Katherine worked the bar & were fantastic! And the servers I encountered all hustled while helping the guests- Christian, Dylan & Kelton were on our dining room team. Special shout out to all of them, they made a great impression. Food- fresh salad and warm dinner rolls were set down first. Wine glasses filled & water glass too. John and I both opted for steak as our main- cooked perfectly and I know that's not easy when catering an event. The whipped potatoes and green beans perfection. The table were set beautifully. The dance floor was in the pool room, the put the floor down right over it! Which was comical because of the bounce in the floors once the dancing began. Being cold the whole time, I couldn't wait for the dj to turn it up. They had the doors open for the dance floor room leading out to the lower gardens where the nuptials were earlier. At this point the sun had set and all of the guest were cold. That was my only complaint- we needed heat for cocktail hour and definitely heat for dinner. Once the dancing began, I warmed up quickly & even had to take 10 outside, without my shawl, to cool down! The festivities were to go on till 10:30pm, but some of us more seasoned guests departed before that. I really hope to come back and explore the estate in the future.

This was a special event, and the dinner menu is not quite yet solidified, but I want to a) talk about the delicious food, b) the beauty of the inn, and c) the hospitable and friendly staff at the Inn/Restaurant. The Inn itself is beautiful and historic. It's located in the heart of downtown Winston, but has its own parking lot which is a huge plus. Our dinner was in a reserved room on a Friday evening. It was a great room for our group of about 11-12. Our waiter, Gary, was THE BEST! He had a radiant personality, and was super attentive! The chefs (Kelly and Juan) came out to talk to us and were a pleasure. The food! I can't wait for this to be a constant menu at the restaurant! We had Fried Green Tomatoes, Mandarin and Goat Cheese Walnut Salad, Braised Short Rib over polenta dish, and Crème Brûlée cheesecake. YUM! And the drinks were very unique and delicious. I am so looking forward to another trip back to Founder's! I absolutely can't wait to try brunch!

It is clean, smells good, and the rooms are spacious. They offer a decent complementary hot and continental breakfast as well as areas to do business, etc. All hotel staff was very professional and friendly. There was one issue that I had with this hotel. On Friday, October 28th, the fire alarm went off throughout the hotel. It lasted for probably around 30 minutes or so. There was no communication or any staff members on the floors instructing guests on what to do. We were all very confused and didn't know if this was a test alarm or if we needed to evacuate the building. There were never any instructions for us to evacuate our rooms. I decided to leave the room and go out of the building because the alarm kept going off and no one was saying anything. As I took the stairs from the fourth floor down to the first floor, there was a strong smell of what seemed like rubber burning. It was only when I got to the first floor that I went and asked one of the staff what was going on and she said that someone put something in the microwave that wasn't supposed to be in the microwave and triggered the fire alarm. At that time, two firemen entered the building to go and evaluate the situation. This was handled poorly. Guests should have received communication on the expectations regarding that fire alarm. Had this been a different situation with a real fire, this lack of communication could've had a detrimental effect on the guests. Other than that situation with the fire alarm, I really enjoyed my stay at this hotel. It is a really good hotel. I rated it as a three solely because of the issue with the fire alarm.
