Bed bugs! Beware!!! Don't stay here!
    Kyla S.

If I could give it zero stars I would! Woke up in the middle of the night with bed bugs crawling on me! Managed to pack as quickly as possible and move to a coworkers room but not before lifting the orange bed skirt and seeing a ton of bed bugs! So grossed out! The next morning when we went to check out to find a new hotel, they would only credit the one room "because the other didn't have bugs" that they saw when they came to see us at 2am. Would avoid this place if you can. Not a lot of options when we come to highpoint market, but I'd avoid unless they have shown they've fumigated!! Had we not been exhausted from just flying in that night we would have moved hotels in the middle of the night if we could have! Don't stay here!!

The gate that provides exclusive access...

The pillows suck but the hotel isn't terrible. Just make sure you don't park in "their" garage. During my week stay, the access gate was not operational (missing to be more precise). Posted along the entire garage were the typical "not responsible" signs. I never thought twice about parking there because a) there were cameras present to capture any malfeasance and b) what was the alternative? Early in the stay, someone [presumably] backed in to my parked vehicle overnight and apparently didn't have the spine to leave an insurance card or note. The damage wasn't major, but enough to be a nuisance for insurance/repair. After noticing the damage and making our rounds for the day, I spoke with the front desk attendant and left my contact information in case someone wanted to confess. She told me she would call to get video footage from the city (which I was informed at the time "runs" the garage). I asked had they had to do this type thing before. She said "yeah," they were trying to find out who might have destroyed the aforementioned access gate. After another day without confession, I walked around the corner to a city building and asked the guard about the cameras. He actually showed me live feed from the city-operated side of the garage, then informed me that the "hotel side" of the garage was actually leased by the hotel and the city didn't operate/maintain the cameras there. Sigh. His advice was to go ahead and file a police report which I did. The police officer that showed up determined it wasn't worth his time to take a photo, estimate damages, ask about the cameras or otherwise. He reluctantly filled out an "exchange" sheet (with only my information on it) and went on to do whatever cops do between fighting crime. His professional opinion was the camera pointing directly at the "scene" couldn't possibly have captured anything. (See photos and judge for yourself.) With the idea that the hotel leases the space, I figured I would try again at the footage. The hotel continued the line that they didn't own the building and gave me the "didn't I read the numerous signs" that completely exonerate them from any responsibility of any kind speech. After three days of simply trying to find out where one might obtain footage from the cameras through circular conversations with hotel staff, I think we arrived at the following basic principles: a) the hotel is not "responsible" for anything b) part of the garage is leased by the hotel, but the staff seems unaware of this or is trained to point the finger elsewhere c) the hotel cares about your safety and well-being as long as you make it across the street into "their" building first d) evidently, according to the general manager (??), a functional camera would have made near zero difference to the situation because "the person might not have had a tag, or something." No one, including myself, would expect the garage owner (whoever it may be) to be liable for damages someone else did. I think it is a reasonable expectation, however, for some safety & security measures to be in place to protect guests and their belongings even if they are on the other side of the street. There is a distinction between liability and responsibility; I think the signs have the proper wording in this case. In a weird twist of irony and karma, the hotel seems to be suffering its own security policies. Since they don't maintain their cameras, they appear to be at the mercy of the city to solve the mystery of who took out the the access gate. Here's my advice, if you're reading reviews/considering a stay: * Don't. Until they take some responsibility to update their policies and maintain your security. * If you can't resist, ask them to refund expenses for parking elsewhere. Since I'm now back in the comfort of my own home, I've figured out how to add a few photos from the experience... See what you think. I see the hotel was quick to respond to my initial review... I'll revise my review after they revise their responsibility. Looks like this behavior goes back at least 3 years without action.

I enjoyed my stay here. The hotel has been updated within the last few years. The staff was friendly and accommodating. They offer a complimentary breakfast and the food and coffee area was clean. My only concern is the parking lot area, which is across the street. For me it was not a problem, but I would have an issue with my wife having to park in a dark parking deck and then walk across a dimly lit street with no attendants on site.

Lame Internet. 2MB up and down with lots of jitter.

This hotel is located in the heart of downtown inside the original RJR building. The front desk staff are all professional, friendly and kind, each encounter with desk staff was exceptional. Valet parking is the only real option, unless you want to drive around looking for a limited parking spot. All of the valet team are professional, courteous and timely each went above and beyond for us. Very comfortable accommodations. We stayed in a king room the first time for a weekend and a king suite for the weeks stay. Both are comfortable, the suite's size and separate seating area definitely make it worth the difference if your stay is extended. King bed, very comfortable, quality linens, very quiet soundproofing with high ceilings and heavy drapery with modern minimalist wall decor. The bathrooms in both are nice the suite, another level of comfort. Walk in large shower with a vessel tub within the shower enclosure. This was a special event, and the dinner menu is not quite yet solidified, but I want to a) talk about the delicious food, b) the beauty of the inn, and c) the hospitable and friendly staff at the Inn/Restaurant. The Inn itself is beautiful and historic. It's located in the heart of downtown Winston, but has its own parking lot which is a huge plus. Our dinner was in a reserved room on a Friday evening. It was a great room for our group of about 11-12. Our waiter, Gary, was THE BEST! He had a radiant personality, and was super attentive! Chosen family- John has been family to the brides side since before she was born. We arrived at 3pm on a cool, fall Saturday in November. The grounds beg to be explored, the history of the house has secrets in her stairwells and rooms. The architecture breathtaking. We waited by the koi pond until it was time to take our seats in the lower garden for the ceremony. Cocktail hour was outside as well and the temperature was dropping. We couldn't wait to get inside for dinner. Well- it wasn't much warmer indoors. The dining area was split between two rooms, one of which was a sun room- all glass doors around the room. The interior room had a giant fireplace blazing in the center. We sat in the outer room- my shawl stayed on throughout dinner. I wore fleece leggings under my gown because I am always cold, but even that wasn't enough. The staff! They wowed me- from escorting guest to the powder rooms (clear on the other side of the house), to the bartenders making drinks the whole night, to the servers working our side of the dining room. Every member of the staff was beyond helpful and friendly. Amanda and Katherine worked the bar & were fantastic! And the servers I encountered all hustled while helping the guests- Christian, Dylan & Kelton were on our dining room team. Special shout out to all of them, they made a great impression. Food- fresh salad and warm dinner rolls were set down first. Wine glasses filled & water glass too. John and I both opted for steak as our main- cooked perfectly and I know that's not easy when catering an event. The whipped potatoes and green beans perfection. The table were set beautifully. The dance floor was in the pool room, the put the floor down right over it! Which was comical because of the bounce in the floors once the dancing began. Being cold the whole time, I couldn't wait for the dj to turn it up. They had the doors open for the dance floor room leading out to the lower gardens where the nuptials were earlier. At this point the sun had set and all of the guest were cold. That was my only complaint- we needed heat for cocktail hour and definitely heat for dinner. Once the dancing began, I warmed up quickly & even had to take 10 outside, without my shawl, to cool down! The festivities were to go on till 10:30pm, but some of us more seasoned guests departed before that. I really hope to come back and explore the estate in the future.

It eventually resolved itself, but since I work remotely, this was more than a minor inconvenience. The real deal-breaker came the following morning. I woke up early and went into the bathroom, only to see a roach crawling near the toilet. That alone is enough to question the hotel's cleanliness standards. On top of that, the bed frame sticks out awkwardly beyond the mattress--something that became painfully obvious when I bumped my shin on it in the middle of the night. Overall, the cleanliness and upkeep of this location leave a lot to be desired. Based on my first stay, I expected more, but after this experience, I won't be returning. After booking, the app wouldn't allow me to apply the upgrade, so I emailed the hotel to ask if one could still be used. When we arrived, the front desk associate thanked us for being Titanium Elite and told us she had upgraded our room. She then wished my wife a happy birthday and mentioned she had received my email -- which was very much appreciated. The room was an excellent upgrade. It included a small kitchenette, a family room with a couch and large TV, and a dining table that could seat six people.
