This place met all of these criteria, and went beyond in several ways. To begin, the staff -- including the front desk, cleaners, and breakfast attendant -- were very friendly and willing to help. I asked about a good place to go running in the morning, and the receptionist printed out some maps of local trails. They keep coffee (regular and decaf) and tea in the lobby, along with bowls of fruit and granola bars. The breakfast was also better than a typical continental, including eggs, breakfast meat, and fruit (mashed raspberries and blueberries). Most of the other guest seemed to be workers of various types, so it was quiet at night. And of course the location was fine. Just about everywhere in petite Platteville is central. In all, if you can get a price you're happy with, it's a good place to stay.

Room 1840 is clean, large, and bright with a private patio off the back. The clawfoot tub was beautiful! The room is on the back of the hotel, so it was very quiet. However, there weren't too many guests staying there during our stay so that may have had an impact on the noise level. Snacks, tea and coffee are complimentary and available 24/7 by the front desk. Breakfast is more like a continental breakfast, but there were a variety of grab-and go foods offered (yogurt, fruit, granola bars, breakfast cookies, candy, etc.) which was perfect since we were doing a lot of driving and sightseeing in the area anyway. "Back Again" is a respite for the weary traveler and casual guests - radiant floor heat, fireplace, stocked kitchen, whirlpool tub - neatly finished in an expertly restored 1800's log cabin - set in an iconic, rural, Wisconsin wooded lot of 5.5 acres. Check in and check out was unobtrusive - we never saw our hosts. Drive in, kick off your shoes, mix an Old Fashioned, and run yourself a warm, relaxing soak. Jill was responsive to our questions and was able to recommend a nearby area for a scenic walk. Cons 1. The website describes the cabins as private and secluded; however the owner's residence and cabins are all within 100 yards of each other, so the feeling of privacy was limited to the interior of our cabin. Cabin Life is also quite close to the road, so traffic noise could be heard even while inside. 2. The website advertises a "continental deluxe breakfast" delivered to the door of Cabin Life each morning by "the breakfast fairy". While the breakfast fairy did exist, and delivered on time, we did not feel that the contents of one small fruit tart, 2 banana muffins, and a scant palm-full of raspberries were up to par with our expectations from the website description. We chose to dine at the Country Kitchen in Platteville instead, which had good food and pleasant service. 3. Hair conditioner was not included with the bath products provided, which resulted in our evening being interrupted by an unplanned half hour round trip to the Platteville drug store.

They can probably seat around 50, if you include the seats at the bar. Our server came over right away, welcomed us and provided a menu that surprised me in that everything on it looked tempting. Honestly, since I was there for the fish, I only paid attention long enough to determine that this might be a place to bring the spousal unit next time. They had four choices for the fry - cod, catfish, blue gill and flounder (the last two are what we got). You get two sides and a roll with the dinner, one side with a basket. I had steak fries and hush puppies - both were just right. The flounder was good, but I'll give the cod a try next time. My friend's blue gill dinner was generous - looked like 5-6 pieces, while my basket had three good sized pieces (I ordered an extra side). Prices were very reasonable. The food came out fast, the music was low enough that we could hear each other without yelling, and the service was excellent. Honestly, the only minor quibbles were that there was too much food to leave room for dessert, and that it was a bit chilly sitting by the window! Definitely will put this into our rotation!
