One thing I'll never understand is boiled hot dogs. Boiling strips away flavor. If you're a hot dog vendor, take notes from Dawg Eat Dog and step up your game. What impressed me? They grilled the hot dog. They toasted the bun. The dog was hot and flavorful. I suspect they may steam the hot dogs before grilling, which is actually a smart move for food trucks because it reduces wait times while still serving a hot product. Whatever they're doing, it works. I found Dawg Eat Dog at Sumner Rhubarb Days, and after one bite, they jumped straight to #2 on my Best Hot Dog List. Now, for full disclosure, the #1 spot is still held by Smokey Joe's Hot Dogs LLC in Peoria, Arizona. I can say that confidently because I owned that stylish shipping container restaurant myself! And before anyone asks, my personal favorite hot dog of all time is still the 7-Eleven Spicy Bite eaten completely naked--no condiments. Sometimes simplicity wins. They also had a variety of sauces out for you to customize your hot dog as well as jalepeno slices but it was difficult to open the containers for jalepenos and relish, ect. I'm always humbled by the people who seem to have a natural gift for connecting with others, and the man at the grill that day showed my son an incredible act of kindness that I want to share. My son was having a rough day, so he sat down on the curb to cool off while we waited for our hot dog. The man at the grill noticed and asked for his help. My son immediately jumped up, handed me his bag, and told me he needed to help with the stand. And just like that, his whole mood changed - he had a purpose, he got to be part of something. With that one simple act of kindness, this man completely turned my son's day around and gave me a new parenting lesson in the process. In that moment, my kid didn't need a pep talk; he needed a chance to contribute and feel needed. This man saw that and chose to engage and I am so grateful he did. To the man at the Big Dawgs stand: thank you for noticing and engaging with my kid, your generosity, and for being an active part of our community. We've also got their regular mac n cheese in the past at the Puyallup Farmers Market for my kids and they are big fans of that! At the food festival, they were serving pulled pork mac n cheese cones (yes, in a waffle cone!) which was a super cute way to serve it. It also was drizzled with some sort of spicy honey which I normally wouldn't choose, but it was SO good and paired so well with the pulled pork and mac n cheese!
