Here's the story everyone. I did have plans weeks in advance to take my dad out for a ride for his 60th. We showed up on time at 4 am and waited around for over 2 hours. Another balloon was let up and then we were told we weren't going because "the very tops of the trees were slightly moving," and we were told to reschedule. Upon that reschedule date coming up, my grandfather had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's and very much wanted to have a big family dinner before his memory started to go. I explained this to you. He is very informative and personable . You park in back of BARTS , and get a ride up the river . Cannot beat the price ! You pay one price and get a kayak for the entire day ! We went today and what a treat ! We were able to see SEVERAL bald eagles , and two guarding a nest ! This is a good river for first timers , the water is never too deep to feel unsafe . It takes about 3-4 hours to get back down the river to BARTS depending on your level of kayaking . There are several little water ways you can turn into and explore ! We've seen all kinds of wild life . The bird sounds and sightings are incredible . Highly Recommend for a relaxing day on the river and supporting a small family business !

Often thinking, this Historic Mill Pond and upstream stretch of the Scantic River must be tackled. That day finally arrived. A later Monday afternoon in July. Should be quiet. Wrong, the Park was bustling. Busy with Park goers: Nature people by the pond, one person enjoying their laptop on a shaded picnic table, kids on the playscape, other kids fishing with a parent and some with a grandparent, and then there were the kayakers loading and others unloading bound for and some returning from the same adventure. A great Small Town feeling. I unloaded and hiked my kayak & gear down to the boat ramp. Chatted with a few, the usual, the great weather, did you fish, how far did you go or plan to go. Public Safety Notice: 1. The upper side of the Mill Dam is dangerous and boaters are warned to stay clear. 2. If you're a first timer like I was, bring a GPS to track your route out and back. There are many dead-end coves and depending on the water level numerous ways to lose the River. There are Orange markers/blazes to follow the River Trail. 3. Wear your Personal Flotation Device (PFD). The Pond, in July was weedy and there was a great deal of surface algae in sections of still water. The main flow of the Scantic was fairly clear and on this trip the water level allowed easier passage across sunken or semi-sunken obstacles. Yes, bugs abound, but so do fish for anglers and foul for watchers.

Our town pool had closed early this year so I was looking for a nearby place for the kids to cool…read moreoff. A friend of mine had mentioned a splash pad opened recently in Broad brook, so I hunted it down! To my surprise, there is a clean looking swimming pond with a cute red slide into the water from the raft out there. Bonus! I was not equipped to swim myself today so we made our way over to the splash pad. It is on the smaller side but new, in great shape and not busy at all. There are a few benches for adults to sit nearby while the kids play. I also noted open pavilions with picnic tables and a small playground. Definitely worth a trip for small kids on a hot day. Low key. Note: there is a small fee for non town residents

We have used their dog boarding…read moreservice for almost two years now, and there is no one I trust more to care for my dogs than Sarah and Mike. Sarah used to be a vet tech, and knows so much about dogs, as far as behavior, care, and nutrition. She actually loves our dogs like her own, and it shows by our dogs enthusiasm when we are headed to her house. We can't even mentioned her name, because my dog gets so excited. The dogs have a huge fenced in area to play outside, and get to see horses. They come home exhausted, and sleep like the whole next day. We pack their food and drop off at an established time. She or Mike are always there for pickup or drop off. We pay by Venmo, which is really convenient. She sends us videos of our dogs playing outside during their time there, and will text us any concerns. This is the absolute best dog boarding facility in the area.
