Annually around the Christmas time, there is a train ride that departs from Willits going to the world's largest Christmas tree. While the ride itself is not super spectacular as it mainly goes through some of the backend of Willits town and some of the nearby forestry (not Redwood in particular), near the end of the ride where you arrive closer to Redwood territory, there is indeed a beautiful large Christmas tree waiting for you and to celebrate with you the holiday seasons. The trip is worth at least one visit. In case you are staying at Fort Bragg, going to Willits is a 1-hour drive via Highway 20. The drive is not the easiest due to all the curves, but you do get to enjoy the forest sceneries along the way.

My husband and I have been wanting to go on the skunk train for awhile, we finally bought tickets for the 4 hour ride, unfortunately one of the bridges had to be repaired so we had to do the 2 hour tour instead. When we got there it was 35 degrees, luckily we were bundled up, but it was even nicer when we got on the train and there was a fire heater on the train. There was a snack bar set up, where they had drinks and snacks. I ended up getting a hot chocolate with peppermint schnapps added in, we then went outside to the open train, and even though it was still cold, the drink kept me warm. =) Besides the awesome train ride, and beautiful views, there was one certain man who worked for the skunk train and his job was to play music for everyone, He was playing a guitar and singing, and when we got to our stop at "Crowley" he came out to the land and played a piccolo and a flute. It really completed the experience.

Exciting day in Willits, boarding The Skunk Train!!

Well today was off to a great start, but a engine blew enroute, to a BBQ that The Train set up for folks. Everyone was terribly disappointed and discouraged. The Skunk Train staff was still extremely professional and courteous in handling refunds. Too bad. Maybe it wasn't meant to be.

So much to see on the way! Feels like your taking a ride through the Ewok forest!

I had SUCH a great time on the Skunk Train! My Mother and I meet up every 3-4 months in Willits to spend the weekend together. She's always wanted to give the train a try, so we did it this time! All in all it was about a 4 hour excursion. There are some trips that take you all the way to Fort Bragg, but today we went half way to Northspur. It's a small, middle-of-the-mountains village type town/depot where you get off to do a little trinket shopping and can enjoy some GREAT home cooked BBQ Tri Tip, Chili, and Pulled Pork sandwiches. You stay there for about 45 min and the head back to Willits. The entertainment on the train was WONDERFUL! Train Singer Greg Schindel took great care of us the entire trip! He had a terrific attitude and was so devoted to his character! The conductor was knowledgable and answered the many, many questions I had with graciousness. Eric, the young man assisting with food and beverages had a great sense of humor and was friendly the entire trip. We had SUCH a great time. The scenery is gorgeous, and the staff were great! My advice to anyone who had an unpleasant experience their first time would be to give the Skunk Depot another chance!

I liked it well enough. There weren't a lot of people so they took away the open car with no windows, which was disappointing. The people that work at that little midway point were amazingly nice and kind, especially the cute man that works the cocoa station. (The hot chocolate is dynamite!). I would also recommend trying a butter scotch sundae.

We love train rides, if you haven't noticed. We usually always spend majority of our time in the open air car. We take train rides because we feel as if we have went back in time. The Skunk Train [Willits Section] is one of the largest tourism locations in Mendocino County. Taking a train ride is A wonderful way to see the scenery in whatever area you are in. Trains have a tendency of either being historic, luxurious, or possibly both. This is indeed a train that is historic and has some beautiful scenery. The staff is very helpful and there is a musician who knows how to play multiple instruments. I don't think he repeated a single track during the entire ride. They have A area where snacks and drinks can be purchased. We recommend you to get on the train as quickly as possible if you want a seat. This shouldn't be a problem if you and one other person are going but if more people are with you definitely arrive on time. This also isn't a issue if you plan to be in the open cart which has a constant influx of people preventing it from being anywhere close to full.

Great train ride. From Wilits to North Spur 1.5 hour then stopped for 45 minutes and encouraged to buy a bbq lunch. We brought our own (not encouraged!). They had a small gift shop there as well. We looked but didn't see anything so we hopped back on when the train was boarding. Nice people that worked there, we had a lovely lady help us at the front desk when we picked up our tickets and she was also our onboard bartender. $5 bloody marys. Overall great experience!

It's a super dog- and family-friendly activity that adults, kids, and dogs all enjoy ! We stayed at Fort Bragg and it took us around an hour to get to Willis where the Skunk Train Pumpkin Express was located through the windy CA-20. Allow yourself ample time to get there. There's a free parking lot right across from the train station. You must check in with the cashier staff inside the gift shop for your tickets, even if you reserved ahead of time online, which I highly recommend! We added wine package to our tickets and got a bottle of local wines and cute wine cups. The train departed on time. Seats are first come first serve. There were 2 covered cars and an open-air car. We sat in the car with the bar/kitchen. And guess what!!! There's restroom on the train. Super convenient! The restroom was clean and decent enough. The train was decorated with fall leaves, making it festive and season appropriate :) We got a conductor who narrated our trip for us, explaining the history and pointing out interesting locations along the trip! He was friendly and knowledgeable. So was the music conductor! He was super talented and played all kinds of musical instruments. Thank you for keeping us entertained during our trip. The first highlight of the trip was when the train went into the tunnel. The conductor would let you know when it was perfect time to step out into the open-air car to see that :) The second highlight was the pumpkin patch, in the middle of the redwoods and at the summit! Such a pleasant surprise! It was lovely decorated with giant skeletons, hays and pumpkins. Each ticket holder could take one pumpkin home. We had 20 minutes to explore the redwoods area or having picnic. After that, the train took us back to the station, going through the redwood one more time :) We had a blast here and it felt magical like Christmas to us ! Thank you to all the staff that made our experience unforgettable! I'll highly recommend the Skunk Train to anyone :)

It's about a 2.5 mile drive from the Bay Area but if you love wine for a reasonable price then this is worth checking out. Hopland is not as commercialized as Napa or Sonoma. It actually an hour drive from Healdsburg. You can expect smaller mom and pops wineries and a friendly staff. In downtown is where all the action is for the Passport event. The ticket is $45 online and $55 at the door (purchase at any participating Hopland winery). It covers the entire weekend and there are at least 2 stations at every winery to taste any wine you desire on the list. The bottles of wine are really cheap and its much cheaper to purchase them in cases. You can also expect food at all the wineries varying from fresh BBQ to finger food. There are a lot od delicious options so be preparred to get drunk and munch along the way as you visit all the wineries. You have to drive to some of the wineries that are a bit further out but they have a seperate shuttle pass you can purchase if you need a DD. I also found out that if you become a DD, you can eat at all the winieries for free. I think that sucks all the fun out of this event but if you are a foodie and not a drinker its pretty cool. My favorite is Brutocao because they have the best fall off the bones rib and grape stomping with your feet activity. The wine is good too. Enjoy!

Smallest theater I've ever been…read more This theater is located in the town of Willits. It has three movie screens in the building. We watched The Meg in an evening show and the price was fairly cheap at $9 a person for general admission. Don't expect a chain of movie theaters with multiple screens or reclining seats & self-service ticketing kiosks. This is a small town movie house with friendly service and a nice smile from the young people working at the theater. Pay for tickets at the outside window and they will buzz you in. As soon as you're inside the theater the concession stand and snack bar is right there in front of you with just a few steps. Inside the movie theater is very clean with new chairs. The red chairs (or was it maroon?) do not recline but they are comfy. TRIVIA: Ever wondered why movie theaters have red seats? It's because red is the first color that is lost to our sight in low-light conditions... anything red virtually disappears once the house lights go down. The movies showing at the time were pretty current. The Meg was only on its second day after its release date. Other two movies showing were Christopher Robin and Mission Impossible. I love the spacious leg room in between rows of seats, the aisles are wide as well. The theater was not full on a Saturday evening, very nice date night with the hubby. I enjoyed my experience in this theater. Review #1114
