Calling all cosmetics lovers, this one is for you. When you shop for luxe cosmetics in Amsterdam, the easiest store choices seem to always be chains like Douglas (a dutch Sephora of sorts) or Bijenkorf (big luxe department store). But I'm here to tell you - my friends, that you should not opt for the obvious choices, for there is the Skins Cosmetics store in the 9 streets district here in Amsterdam.
I can't believe I didn't know about Skins before, being that I've lived in Amsterdam for almost three years now. It just seems like such a crime! They also have other stores in the country and even in Ibiza. I have been purchasing mostly from Cosmania (the only place I can find Mario Badescu), another store that carries a good amount of niche brands. But Skins Cosmetics have a big selection of brands I can't find anywhere else in Holland and personally love, such as Diptyque, Grown Alchemist, Aesop, Aveda, Laura Mercier, Mason Pearson, Byredo, Le Labo, Kiehl's, Rodial, Leonor Greyl, and the list goes on (the store carries about forty brands).
The Store has a cool concept that is entirely about the consumer experience. They invite you to take samples home (the ones they have in store or will create for you) to try and to feel as comfortable as you can in the store. I had a couple tea, chocolate, and fresh fruit while sampling and browsing around for a new fragrance, and also had enough time to explore other brands by myself which made the whole shopping experience that much more comfortable. I really dislike when I enter a store and suddenly I'm surrounded by the staff pushing me to buy their products and try whatever they think is best. That is absolutely not the case with Skin Cosmetics. They also have a free service called Nose, that helps you find the perfect fragrance for you based on your preferences.
They specialize in selling niche brands, and some of these brands are only available in The Netherlands in their stores. All products have high quality ingredients and you can learn a thing or two from their staff, that seem to have complete knowledge and passion for what they are selling. If you find yourself in the 9 streets district, this place is a must-stop for all skin-care and fragrances enthusiasts. There is also a Salon upstairs inside of the store. Although I haven't tried their services myself, I hear really good things about it.
I must say I walked out of the store pretty happy with my purchases, a few samples from products I choose to try at home, and a belly full of nice lemon ginger tea.
This review turned out super big because it's originally what I also posted on my blog :) read more
