Melina's Lingerie Shoppe is part of the city of Hollywood's Historical Landmark Plaque Tour sponsored by the Hollywood Historical Society and the Community Redevelopment Agency. This is stop number 10. Opened in 1945, Melinas is the oldest family owned and continuously operated business on Hollywood Blvd. The store is named for the current owner Elsie Johns "Miss J"'s stepmother Melina Tomich. The store started out selling children's underwear and clothes and evolved into selling lingerie. 98 year old Miss J still runs the family business. When they first started selling undergarments all women wore girdles, hosiery, and bras. As girdles fell out of fashion they began to sell the more revealing lingerie that is popular today. With its jewel colored walls the store maintains a vintage feel. A historic plaque on the outside of the building notes its historical significance.

We weren't here to shop, however. We came here to find the historic plaque on the outside of the building. This store was honored as the "oldest continuously operated business on the (Hollywood) Boulevard". Last year, Elsie Johns, 97 at the time, was interviewed. She still was going into work everyday in the building that her father built. Melina's was named after her father's second wife. In this location since 1946, this is quite an accomplishment. Today, the average life of a small business is under 10 years. And they are still going at over 70 years!
