We rented a car from Sixt in Potsdam from The Kayak app. We initially reserved a luxury car, which should have given us a BMW 5 series or a Mercedes E series or comparable. We reserved and were charged the appropriate rate for that type of car. Upon checking in, we were told that Mercedes and BMW vehicles are not allowed to be returned to offices in France, and that we would be given a comparable vehicle. In this case, we were given a Ford C-Max, which in now way compares to a BMW or Mercedes. Yet, we were charged the same rate as if we had taken the luxury car.
We checked at the München Hbf office and we were told that he information given at the Potsdam office was incorrect. We were subsequently offered a Mercedes E class for the duration of our rental, yet no prorated refund on the car class difference was offered. The very next day, the low oil light came on and the air conditioner went out on our way from München to Luxembourg. We diverted to Inglestädt to once again switch out a car. We were told at that location that only a manual transmission BMW was available, but it was not cleaned out from the previous rental. Since we paid for an automatic transmission, I asked that their manager be dispatched to resolve the problem. It was clear they simply did not want to give me what I paid for; hoping I would simply take what they gave me. After two hours, we were given an Audi A6, which was in the car class we paid for initially. But still we paid 4 days for a car rental which we were given the incorrect car class for which we booked.
Sixt, why all the games?
Why would the online reservation system allow me to reserve a car that is clearly not eligible for a drop off point? They did charge me €166 for the drop off location, so it would seem that the reservation system should have caught this.
And Sixt has thus far been evasive when addressing this, even after the rental was returned.
Either way, it is a big hassle and leaves a sour taste in my mouth. In all likelihood I will be sticking to Avis, which I have had a good relationship with in the past. Beware if you rent from these guys. BMW, Audis and Mercedes vehicles can be returned to France. Don't let them tell you otherwise. When we returned the car to the France Sixt lot at CDG, I counted over 15 luxury cars that were either a BMW, Mercedes or Audi. So they lied to me. Don't let them lie to you. read more
