My 1year old rescue Pitbull Doberman mix has a lot of trust issues and was reactive to every person or car that came our way. He went to the 4 week program and the trainers offered a complementary 5th week to continue working on his triggers. He is still a work in progress but we are able to go on walks everyday without lunging and barking at passers by. The trainers have been true to their promise of being trainers for life, and have responded to my questions and concerns with helpful tips and instructive videos to improve unwanted behaviors. There was a compelling review that indicated they use negative reinforcement techniques such as shock collars. If you have a puppy, under 1 year then I wouldn't use their services. When our Aussie Doodle slipped out of our hands, crossed a highway, and swam in a golf course pond, narrowly escaping death on the highway we knew we had to get control of him. We were hesitant to try Sit Means Sit in Maui but after his training, our dog loves the place, and so do we. We now have a happier dog, we can keep him safe and we no longer are pulling our hair out because he is after our shoes, glasses, pens, or happily jumping on people. We started her out with their puppy training right when we brought her home and they gave us the framework and confidence to build an incredible relationship with our puppy from the start. As a 30 year dog owner, who has been in rescue, rehabilitation, and training, I deplore negative reinforcement, even by means of a tens unit type training, using shock, (do it to yourself) is the worst thing you can do to an animal. The best and most educated trainers, dog and people teachers, is positive reinforcement. All the most credible humane organizations do NOT recommend this type of teaching/training. The best dog behaviorists, from Cornell, etc. never recommend any shock, or negative method. This can even cause aggressive behaviors. There is no guarantee that the owner or handler won't abuse this kind of method. In addition, if you stand by the road listening to the dogs in their kennels/ cages, in Haiku, Maui, there is yelping and constant barking. This is not the way to own, or train a dog. When you teach a dog, you teach the family, and dog parent, as well. This is not the way to teach. You will never see a successful dog, or other animal in the movie business, for example, taught by a shock or tens, collar. I had them come and demonstrate it to me, as a potential training method, and I was shocked, emotionally, as was my dog. Sit means sit is an absolutely amazing dog trainer. We have a retriever mix who had just about every anxiety problem you could imagine. He was insecure, he would bark for HOURS when left alone, destroy every thing in his sight, pee and poop anywhere he wanted, he hated anyone who came into the house and bark bark barked. We couldn't have him anywhere near other dogs, he was overprotective of me. He was a train wreck. After coming home from his 4 weeks board and train, I thought they gave me the wrong dog. He was barely making noise right off the plane. He sat immediately after being told when I disassembled his crate for the car ride home. It was almost like he was tired but he wasn't. It's not been easy since he's been home, but it's not the way it use to be either. I have to use higher collar pressure sometimes because he's stubborn. Sometimes he has accidents in the house and sometimes he gets into the trash when home alone Bear is 4 years old and has always been this way BUT its been 2 month since he came back home and I haven't heard him bark when left alone, we can go on walks and pass other dogs, people, bikes, etc.. his confidence is through the roof now. He's so happy and energetic. He loves everyone who comes over. Correcting 4 years worth of unwanted behavior certainly has its challenges but with dedication, it's possible! The training doesn't end when your dog comes home, that's where it truly begins. Scott and his crew are dedicated to seeing your doggo succeed. We had to reschedule Bears training 2-3 times because he had TPLO surgery twice and they were completely understanding. Scott is so quick to answer any questions or concerns you might have. When guests come over, they always say how well behaved Bear is and how quickly he responds to a command. It's changed our life and made Bear the happy, confident dog he was meant to be. There is so much to consider and so much work to do when considering adding a new member (dog) to your family. Professional Dog Training is not an area that you want to short change. He's a red staffordshire bull terrier/pit mix. Cutest thing ever but, like most dogs, he is a lot of work and well worth it. She has so many certifications; they would not have been possible without Scott and his team. She just got verified as a show dog for her behavioral skills ( although I will most likely not be doing that with her), and I just finally acquired her pedigree certification. For my life & Luna, it's always been a goal to make her a "Hawaii resident," and a dog that I can travel with. Jake was organized and very nice. I'm sorry to say that he must be uninformed about shock collar use. Do your own research before letting him put a collar on your dog!!! Do not take it from me - talk to your vet and the humane society. This kind of training is only for dogs who have severe behavioral problems - then it should be handled by a trainer with many years of experience. Sit means sit is a franchise business that gives trainers a minimum of training and uses collars as a shortcut to training dogs. My dog was injured in the demo. She required medical care afterwards. I feel guilty about it as I should have done my own research first. Check out the humane society brochure, which specifically says "Shock collars are not recommended and may cause pain and create other behavioral problems" Is that what you want for your dog? Not me. Yes, he will have you feel the effect of the collar - but how much does your dog weigh? Does your dog feel what you feel or more in comparison to weight? How much does a "trainer" turn the collar up while he is away from you to get a desired result in order to make the sale? I hate to write a negative review, but I really want to save any other pet from the fate my dog is suffering. She is only 13 lbs and is now sad and afraid. After only 2 minutes with the collar on - Thank Goodness I cancelled the week long camp for her! My vet was shocked and angry about the use of a collar on my dog. she is essentially a good dog who just needs a little consistent training, I need to be a better pet owner, I'll try harder, with a better training company. From what I understand this business is run from Maui but services other islands. I live on Oahu and worked with Chris. I signed up for the Board and Train program for my 7 month old 3/4 labrador, 1/4 golden retriever. I'll warn you right now that it isn't cheap, BUT, i got all the results that I wanted. I have 3 young children (6,4,1 years old) and they all had a hard time with this large, very active puppy. There wasn't a thing in the house that didn't go un-chewed. She used to take food out of the kids hands. She would not come when called. We badly wanted a dog and be able to have off-leash experiences with it. We decided that it would be a good investment for our family to take her training seriously. We called sit means sit and they sent Chris over to do a demo. He brought his dog and we were pretty impressed. We signed up for the training about 1 month later. After 11 days we were so surprised how well behaved our dog was. She was no longer chewing everything. She didn't take food out of my kids hands. She comes when called. We were seriously impressed at the change. There's still work you have to do after the board and train but it only takes about 20 mins a day, so it's time you'd spend with your dog anyways. It has also been a great bonding experience. We spent quite a bit of time exploring our options for dog training. Our pup needed better training for his own safety and happiness. We knew if he wasn't well trained we would be bad owners because he would miss out on family events. Before training he would run away, not listen, Chase other dogs even if it means jumping out of the car! We didn't want him to get hurt and that's when we found Scott. I was hesistant - not going to lie. We used a collar before that I purchased from Petco and I never heard my dog yelp the way he did. So when I saw the collar that SMS uses I was apprehensive. Our demo did not include using the collar on our dog. The trainer demo'd with his personal dog. In fact we didnt use the collar until our 4th lesson. We had time to work with our dog, to build a strong bond and routine. The collar was used as a "attention getter" - not to demand or correct bad behavior. If the tool is used correctly it can work for you. Our trainer, Chris Koanui, was excellent. You can tell he truly loves dogs annd understands dog psychology. Rocky was a VERY reactive dog, filled with anxiety, barked at everything. We werent able to enjoy our time with him. Scott has the attitude of a gun shop employee. you know the type? They make snap judgements on the behavior and disposition of dogs after very short observations. They dont ask any questions of the owners as to what they were doing prior to Sit Means Sit training. The secretary gave me huge attitude on the phone when I asked for a e collar replacement. Not a good expirience and these are NOT professional trainers. Buyer beware they may be ok for house dogs and "easy" pets but thats it. How they stay in business Im not sure. I had been looking forward to bringing home my boxer puppy with such excitement after a three year break from the breed. I have had several boxers and am well aware of the breed's propensity to be a challenge to train but had never had difficulty overcoming that in the past. When the new puppy came home and I stated working with her it quickly became apparent my "training expertise" wasn't going to cut it. I bought books, watched videos, searched the Internet and almost gave up on her as she became more and more aggressive. She would bite me, pull me down the road, body slam me and completely ignore me. She was not loving or snugly or any of the things I knew the breed to be. She spent a lot of time in her kennel sadly. I happened to see Scott's truck parked by the side of the road one day and quickly jotted down the number. When I got home, I looked up their website and was impressed and curious. I booked a home visit and thought "we'll see". Scott came over and we chatted for a bit and then we went out to the front of the house (a place Moji never got to go). He explained how his training worked and then put a collar and leash on her and took her out into the street. My husband and I watched in amazement as this wild dog very calmly stopped, thought about his quiet discussion with her for a minute and then came and sat at his feet. I was SOLD. Moji went to the ranch for 12 days and when we picked her up I was sure they had switched her with another dog. She had manners, she was sweet and loving and OBEDIENT!! I'm a believer! We have a 7 month old golden retriever puppy. At three months of age he went through the Sit Means Sit puppy training. That was a big help. We had been in a very negative cycle with the pup. Our training just consisted of "No"! Scott Sanchez taught us how to train through positive reinforcement. It really changed the whole dynamic of our relationship with our dog. Unfortunately, as he entered "adolescence" he regressed and became a bit of rascal, not following our commands. Recently we completed the 10 day course, and the results have been dramatic. Our dog is very obedient now, and follows all of the major commands right away. I feel like we just got a new dog. I'm so happy that I decided to contact Sit Means Sit Hawaii, without them I'm not sure where we would be. I own a one and a half year old German Shepherd who is all energy and all sass. I decided to email Sit Means Sit after giving up on my dog's THIRD trainer who didn't think they could help anymore, one trainer said that she was untrainable. Within fifteen minutes of emailing them I received a phone call from them and we set up a time for Jake, our trainer, to come over and give us the free demonstration. Jake was very well prepared and we felt a connection with him instantly, he answered all the questions we had and it was obvious that our dog (Eeva) loved him. By the time he left my husband and I agreed that the training was worth the investment and set up a time for Jake to pick Eeva up the next day to start her training. The training isn't cheap but it was worth every penny. Eeva has done a complete 180, she still has her sass and she is the same dog but she is way more well behaved and listens to us when we tell her commands. Many people are put off because of the collar but trust me when I say it causes them no pain. At the demonstration Jake had us feel it before he put it on Eeva and we could barely feel it. It's used to grab their attention and causes them to focus on you, which is exactly what we needed in order to train Eeva. Before Sit Means Sit you literally could not leave Eeva in the room without worrying about her chasing one of our cats, chewing up a piece of furniture, or trying to jump through the baby gate. Now when I leave the room I don't worry at all. This training was literally a life saver for my family, having our dog no longer feels like a chore. Now I'm going to talk about our trainer, Jake. He is an AMAZING trainer. He sent us pictures and videos every day that Eeva was with him. Even though Eeva is well behaved now we still meet occasionally to brush up on some thing we have slacked on and we know that Uncle Jake is just a phone call away in case Eeva starts acting up. He's even there whenever Eeva is having a bad doggie day just to vent to. Eeva also LOVES him, whenever she goes with him for training or if we need him to watch her for us she never looks back. After seeking input from several other dog owners and looking at online recommendations, we set up a demo with Sit Means Sit. I am so glad we did!! Jake was knowledgeable and interacted well with my dog. We used the 7 day program and I was happy to see photos and videos of his progress. We have a 7 month old dogo argentino. We had been working on training her ourselves. We had mild success. She is an extremely powerful dog and mild success was not adequate. When she decided to do what she wanted to it was difficult to stop her. Long story short we went on a week vacation and needed to board her so we decided to spend the extra for a board and train. We called several trainers on Oahu and Sit Means Sit on Maui. The off island fact made them Our last choice when we made the list. However, they were extremely responsive and professional. Not pushy or put out by our inquiries and questions. They sent over a good information package with videos. They quickly rose up our list and finally we opted to go with Sit Means Sit. Our dog,Hina, did a 10 day board and train. She came back a different dog. Still loving and puppy as ever but we were able to control her 100% of the time. Her obedience is exponentially greater. SCOTT did 2 follow up visits a week apart at our home. Both were simple and to the point. He explained how she was trained so we could understand the training philosophy and how to use the ecollar. The following week was a tune up for us which was very helpful In sharpening our skills. I would and have recommended Sit Means Sit to friends. WOW, could not disagree more. We splurged and paid the high cost based on supposed testimonials. Leonard took our dog and brought her back with the promise she would be under control in public (i.e. not chase after anything that moved). He gave my wife some exercises to work with our dog. My wife did them religiously with her. We had to call Leonard (his promise was LIFETIME guarantee) to ask him to come out. He could not be more put off. When he came, he saw how she had not changed, and agreed to take her again. He brought her back and basically gave up, saying she was just a crazy dog. Did not offer a refund, did not train our dog, COMPLETE WASTE OF MONEY. I would recommend Leonard to nobody. Just excuses and blame shifting, not professional at all. read more

Beware! Shock collar conditioning. Not dog training. Doing a lot of research on this company was very disturbing, stories from people who trusted this company with their dog and paid top dollar ($800-$2000 and up!) Stories of dogs getting their ears bitten off by the trainers dog, becoming more aggressive, turning on their owners, being terribly frightened, shaking, yelping, screaming, running around in confusion, hiding, bald spots, multiple shock collars including one on the groin and dog owners taking their dogs away from the training or seminars in disgust of the cruelty, despite the large non refundable investment. This is a very large company that has destroyed many dogs. Many terrible reviews can be found in a short time about this company. Our own experience was bad as well. We expected a trainer who could immediately address the situation of our dog jumping, pulling on the leash and nipping(friendly) at everyone at the free consultation. (many of our friends are firm with our dog and can simply stop her from doing this) but he just stood there while she acted this way. The only way he could somewhat control our dog was with his magic shock collar that has a low setting you can feel, (like a muscle stimulator) but that thing can crank way up, and be continuously shocking until the dog reacts to the desired outcome. Our dog was still running from the leash doing her own thing until a loud scream and jump came from our tough as nails 3 year old pitbull. Our dog just stood there after and did not want to move. He also showed us some terrible U tube videos of dogs doing nothing impressive. Our friend is a local pet groomer and says this "ecollar" causes bald spots in the areas it's used. And got a huge " stay away! " from them. We were completely 100% mislead to believe that no pain would be involved, and felt terrible that we had let someone else handle her without knowing exactly what they were going to do! Our dog Never yelps like that except in extreme pain. Also, don't forget this is NOT training, you will be using that device for life, and they want you to buy one for $200+, paying a lot of money to shock your own pet. Please beware! read more
