I preferred the weissbier, trading my stour and marzen with my tourmates for theirs. This is a nice comfy underground brewpub and I get the feeling that it can get a little friendly during the more "Oktoberfest" times of the year. Free wifi, comfy seating, great beers. I really enjoyed it here and it's more than clear that Helsinki has an excellent craft brew culture going on! [Review 10076 overall, 1661 of 2018.]

Acutally on Sunday they have a brunch that is not too crowded.... 17 euro a person and you get to eat various things off the buffet. It was decent, but the price is a bit steep. The desserts were quite good also. They have a food menu here in English if you are hungry, but I can save you some time. Do yourself a favor and order the burger. Yes, I realize it's 15 euro for a burger. But it's damned good. Other than that , makara means "sausage" and they have a couple different kinds.

I've been to Urho's countless times over the past decade or so. Because when I leave this venerable…read morepub I'm usually incapable of counting. This most recent visit was last Tuesday for after work drinks with colleagues. As you might expect, Urho's radiates that traditional dark, dank British pub vibe. They've got booth seating as well as scattered smaller tables, and an outside terrace around the entrance facing Museokatu -- weather permitting. This trip I sipped a half pint of Dcuk English Pale Ale (Dancing Duck, UK) from the tap and a bottle of Hop Ottin IPA (Anderson Valley Brewing, USA). Both were nothing to write home about. I would say the tap selection is rather average for a typical British pub (even in Finland), but above average for a typical FInnish bar. Urho's used to be *the* place to quench you exotic brew thirst, offering an extensive bottle selection. But times change and the Helsinki craft brew scene is rapidly evolving. Unfortunately Urho's doesn't seem to be adapting to this changing climate -- this visit felt the same as one over a decade ago. I'll be back to Urho's because it's a staple Helsinki pub, but I'm hoping to see their tap and bottle selection broaden -- the former, in particular.

We also had the 3 tapas of olives, goat cheese w/berry sauce and a meatball. I enjoyed the olives but I don't like goat cheese. It wasn't strong goat cheese but was paired well with the sauce. My friend had the burger. Thick small patty but was slightly undercooked to our liking. It was a rare vs a medium rare. We ate around it and still enjoyed it. They also had a dark and heavy-bodied iPA called Two Devil? It was yummy and definitely a meal itself. The seating is fun and plenty with a lower and upper level balcony area. Would I return? Yes, with a huge group of friends! Such a fun atmosphere with all the wall art.

This trendy location is a café and restaurant during the day. Try for example their daily changing lunch offers that include their really nice salad buffet. They were both excellent, but I will tell you I could've eaten that Hunter schnitzel with the wild mushroom gravy every night we were here. The service was good and Thor took great care of us. Munkkiniemi + Pub = Ukko-Munkki. I've patronized this venerable pub many times over the years --…read moreit's my local. For those making a trip here, it's conveniently located near a Tram 4 stop. They have seasonal outside seating, and inside the upstairs is more for dining while the downstairs is a bar setting. (It is not strict, just a guideline.) The on tap selection is fairly limited, the bottle selection slightly broader. I started with a bottled domestic Huvila Pale Ale (Malmgårdin Panimo). They keep a rotating seasonal draft -- this time it was Brooklyn Lager. I had a pint since I don't recall having seen this on tap in Finland. Storied tradition notwithstanding, what differentiates Ukko-Munkki from any other random Helsinki pub is the food. They serve up hearty portions from Finnish classics like meatballs, to steaks, burgers, and pizzas. On this particular Saturday afternoon visit I ordered the escargot with goat cheese -- my personal favorite. Tasty -- hadn't changed at all since the first time I had it years ago. Myself and two close friends, one of which is currently living in the city, had to do tonight where we went to the bar and reminisced about times past and the future. I'm generally not one for super expensive beers, but I about wet my pants when I saw that they had a Westvleteren 10! I'm definitely not a beer aficionado, but I do know something about Trappist style brews. The Westvleteren 12, One step up from what they had here, is largely appreciated as the best beer in the world. The stuff is incredibly hard to find and even harder to purchase in a bar setting. It was really cool to have an opportunity to try this, in Helsinki, with a couple of good buddies by my side. Call me in the nostalgic, but at the end of the day all we really have are stories!
