My…read morefirst time at Molly Malone's, I was staying just around the corner which made this Irish pub a solid base of operations for my exploration of Helsinki. It is your basic Irish pub with few frills, but the cider is a nice break from your average Helsinki beverage. Prices are reasonable, and the bar is very clean which may contribute to a less authentic feel. My first time at Molly Malone's I recall that my bartender was really annoyed with some of the bar's Russian clientele. Ok, maybe a group of drunken Russian's singing songs of the motherland was like nails on a chalk board to an Irishman, but I had great time that afternoon and couldn't wish for anything better. Several years later, I found Molly Malone's to be the same safe haven I had experienced so long ago. The only difference this time is that I wasn't staying in Helsinki so my stay was unfortunately brief. Still a cold pint of Ireland's finest is always good when you can get it.

If I recall, the live music is upstairs every night, but didn't check it out this particular night. There's also a terrace to the courtyard side, but I didn't try to visit so not sure if its open this time of year. Just popped in for a few quick Guinness pints. Great pour and settle by the barkeep! Efficient and friendly staff. Fun fact: I've also been to this pub's sister, The Brazen Head in Dublin. Worth checking out if you're ever there :) There's currently some construction going on to the outside of the building, so be aware if you're having trouble finding it.

But the fact is this pub has the best selection of brews in Helsinki that I know of. And I don't mean just lots of different beers -- they are shooting for quality, not quantity. Saturday night with a few friends -- no coat check required, found a booth. This place had beers from two of my favorite SoCal craft breweries (Green Flash, Coronodo Brewing Company). I was speechless -- but perhaps the tasty, hoppy Idiot IPAs had something to do with that. I will absolutely be back here.

The idea of a smoking room is fantastic, but sadly, like every other smoking room in Helsinki, it is always overused and poorly ventilated. Basically you just walk in there, stand for about two minutes, and walk out. You never even have to light up, you will get so much nicotine in your system you're guaranteed to get a headache almost instantly. Not picking on the Dubliner....all those smoking rooms are like that. Food here is not that great... all frozen stuff that you should avoid unless you're desperate. Decent music, not too loud, not too quiet.

The cocktails here are quite good and there is free wifi! Unfortunately, they do not take American Express (as I found many places in Helsinki do not) but this place is great! On this particular day I had a Suomenlinna IPA pint from the tap. Ouch, 10 EUR but I guess that's to be expected at any airport bar. Unusually, I didn't have any problem finding a stool. The barkeep was at the end of his shift and his demeanor showed it. Overhearing his exchanges with customers, I empathized with him -- lots of broken English conversations with (possibly drunk) transient passengers. I like the good selection but there isn't much that stands out for this pub except it being in the airport. Which only means I'm guaranteed to be back here.

However, as with so many other nice burger places its too much focus on the meat and less on the dressing and type of cucumber - none. This place is made for hangouts, with board games and couches (or tables), perfect for an evening with friends. To fit into this focus the price of beer has to be lower. 7€ for a normal beer is too much for hangouts. The place is big, and nice. The staff was not as good on recommending stuff, they went strictly on the menu. I'm not interested in the menu, I just said I want THE burger. With cheese, without bacon, please. The Original Cowboy Peyton Place! This is a Texas Tornadoes…read morethemed bar located right in the middle of the Kamppi Design District in Helsinki. The bar owner is a total fan of the Texas Tornadoes and anything Texan. He's a Finn, but has traveled to the Lone Star State several times to take in the beauty, and is bringing a little Texas to Finland! I felt like this bar would be right at home in the Texas Hill Country. Around the bar, you'll find posters depicting the likes of Doug Sahm, Dale Watson, and Willie Nelson. There are Lone Star flags up over the register! God Bless Texas! The owner is a bigger Texas Tornadoes fan than I am, and I love their stuff- I thought I knew all their songs, but they've worked some Texas Tornado references into the bar that even I had to stop and think on. On Monday nights, they hold a jam session (no cover!), where local musicians get together and jam on a country/rockabilly rhythm, and crank out the jams. The best was hearing Johnny Cash sung with a Finnish accent! They have an extensive beer and liquor list, and the staff is friendly. The place feels safe, and clean. There are plenty of places to sit, along with some slot machines. They offer the national beer of Finland on draft, Karhu, but most of their best beers are micro-brews from a bit further north in Finland- amazing IPAs. The prices are quite reasonable, and it's warm inside. I had an absolute blast hanging out here, and reminiscing of Texas with the owner- he brought out his guitar and jammed out some acoustic Texas Tornado music. I'll certainly be back next time I'm in Helsinki!
