The Sip 'n Dip lounge is a must-stop spot if you're ever in Great Falls, MT. Is it in what appears to be a sketchy area downtown? Perhaps. Do you feel awkward parking at a hotel that looks like a total dump just to go upstairs to this bar? Yes, but you still should. I ended up going on my own, and came back with colleagues the last night of our trip as it's a must stop. As I'm sure we all know, what makes it fun and unique is the dancing Mermaid performances in the pool behind the bar. Such a cool concept to watch them entertain you while you enjoy a good drink. My first time in the bartender was fantastic and giving me all the history of the place, and how the pool used to just be the hotels' actual swimming pool, and guests would swim in it, no Thank you. I ordered the cranberry cherry limeade, not realizing that it was basically a bucket full of booze, equivalent to three drinks (not complaining, just forewarning) also enjoyed chatting with the bartender about how the place is haunted. Definitely gives off that vibe and total dive bar/tiki feel. I'd come back every time I'm in this town or on a road trip. 21+---although they allowed a few families to come in with kids for a minute and get a picture by the mermaids, which I thought was super cool. Interesting. Mermaids appear after 6pm. Parents AND THEIR KIDS show up at 5.45. The good news they're forced out by 8:00. Thank god, I showed up at about 5:00, got seated at the bar, and had three rather warm vodka martinis and an app of coconut shrimp before the show began. Ambiance is funky, but if you did not guess this before arriving, you must have been hiding under a rock. I like a dark bar, and that's what I found, but the crowd turns into a line at Disney World when the Mermaid begins swimming. Arrive early and leave early. read more

This is not a tiki bar. This is a bad bar that wants you to think it's a tiki bar. Is it cool looking inside? Yes. Are there "mermaids" swimming behind the bar? Yes. Can they make a mai tai? Absolutely not. They make a drink that they call a mai tai, but this is not that. The Sip n Dip's version has coconut rum, Sailor Jerry spiced rum and I believe orange juice in it, and a few ice cubes, served in a pint glass with an umbrella and a couple of cherries. There is no lime. There is no orgeat. There is no overproof rum. There is no curacao. This was the worst drink, of any drink, that I have ever had. It was disgusting. They are not trying. They do not care. They've probably convinced half of Great Falls that this is a mai tai, which it definitely is not. It was the only cocktail I had there. We were looking for a special hangout for a drink before our hotel check-in. What we found was a great bartender, amazing Prime Rib, and Mermaids. We had a fishbowl drink, with fish straws and a large , juicy prime rib dinner that was exactly what we were looking for. The meat was flavorful and respectably tender for prime rib. Aujus and Horsey sauce were a great addition. I also liked the veggies and the mini loaded potato. If you're nearby, it's worth the drive. Early evening was mellow, night time is packed. Bartender dismissed any questions about food because it is run by a separate restaurant (Clark and Lewies downstairs) so if you order food you get two checks. Seemed a bit complicated! Joel Corga, their music man, filled the bar with classic songs that everyone could join in and sing along. He played both the piano and guitar as he entertained us all!!! What an interesting place hidden away in the O'Haire Motor Inn. We didn't eat but the food going by looked amazing and there were several people eating. The menu was quite extensive. The whole bar area was decorated in full tiki theme but the main attraction was the "mermaid" swimming in a pool with a glass front behind the bar. Apparently, they do a 4 hour shift in that tail in the pool. She was graceful and friendly to all the patrons and for a tip, you can go to the glass and get a pic with her or up close of her. The service was friendly and attentive. The bathrooms were small but clean and retro. There's memorabilia and pics on the walls of when they first built the place in 1962. So in all fairness, I didn't get a chance to get a seat and try to eat here or get a drink. The place is crowded and you have to hover over someone's table or find a place against the wall to wait and hope you are near someone who is finishing their meal or drink so you can swoop in. This place was so much fun. We were on a road trip to Glacier National Park and found this gem. It had excellent food with large portion sizes and unique cocktails. Let's be honest though, we came for the show and it was pretty entertaining. It's not everyday that you get to see mermaids while enjoying food/cocktails. Elizabeth at the bar tells that this place is haunted. The whole town is, she says. But this bar in particular. She sees an old man in the corner booth. After closing, after she turns out the lights. Whatever the case, the bar isn't haunted by Mermaids. Not this week anyway. Like so many other aficionados of fine 60's day-drinking bars, I flew to Great Falls from Arizona to spend a couple days of drinking fish bowls of diabetes-inducing Tiki drinks while mermaids and I assumed also bloated tourists swan in the pool that is the underwater backdrop behind the bar. Turns out the pool was under renovations. The backdrop was now simply a Dollar General shower curtain covering the glass, adorned with fishes swimming like a cheap version of the Roku aquarium screensaver. But I didn't come here just for Mermaids. I came here to get drunk for a couple of days in a vintage bar that has been on my list for years. It checks every box of a perfect bender. Inside a Motor Inn with an old school diner attached. And it even has some smoking rooms. Top that for "retro." I peeled in off the plane wearing an insidiously striking 70's suit, pink with thin white stripes and dotted with white anchors. It could have been wardrobe from an episode of "The Love Boat." I made people stare. It forced people to comment. It invoked envy and envy is a cardinal sin. My suit made God angry. I dumped my bag in my smoking room and hit the lounge where I met Elizabeth, the bartender who apologized for the lack of Mermaids before giving me the misdirect to the ghosts. I met some fine folks. Laura was in town to see her brother Tom in Hospice care. She saw my suit and asked if I'd just stepped off a plane from Cuba. When I told her I was a comedian, she began to tell me run-on jokes, punctuated with unnecessary details and caveats that she's bad at telling jokes. I interrupted. "Laura, do you think that there is any chance that your brother Tom is only hanging on to life this long just waiting for your punch line?" Laura laughed and finished her Belgian waffles and then my open face roast beef sandwich before saying goodnight. I met a guy from SLC towards last call who shared my own story. He too had traveled far to visit this Sip & Dip Mecca where his mother, in her youth, had been a regular and a Person of Interest. Mr. SLC may have even been conceived here but that's only speculation. I told him that I had an upcoming show in Salt Lake and within minutes he'd gotten on his phone and bought tickets. I'm practically making money just being here. At breakfast the waitress greeted me with a $100 gift card. I'd tweeted a pic that night before at the bar prompting a fan to send the gift. Now I had less than 24 hours to spend it all. I'm hyperbolically certain that with that card I bought people at least 400 drinks, a soup kitchen worth of meals, a new set of nails for Angel, a small but cozy duplex on the river with a view, the majority share in a Botswana diamond mine and a Carl's Jr franchise and still had 23 dollars left in credit. With that, I bought a $20 travel mug with a Sip & Dip logo and left the last few dollars as a tip. On the last morning as I waited for check-out and my shuttle, I was entertained by the screeching of angry tires, muted domestic violence and the sobs of stab wounds from my first floor window. I peeked through the curtains I saw a sign that told me that I was at the epicenter of the real entertainment. Who needs Mermaids when you are yards away from "New Directions Center For Mental Health." The cacophony of domestic disturbance was mostly just one guy, in a spastic rage and fighting only himself. Or so it would seem. I like to believe that he was fighting that ghost who is always pestering Elizabeth in the corner booth at the bar after hours. read more

A very cute and touristy little place in Montana! The food: we came for the Mermaid Brunch. It was $19.95 a person and came with all you can eat food. The food was pretty good. The best (and most delicious part) was the HUGE smoked salmon! It was phenomenal. The rest of the food was good (not great) but they had everything from biscuits and gravy to fruit to bagels to eggs and potatoes. It also came with drinks - hot, cold, or mimosas. I opted for a mimosa and it was heavily orange juice (but then again, that's expected at a buffet!). The vibe: such a great idea to do brunch at the sip n dip lounge! There is so much happening at this bar. First, it is a one of a kind/write home to your friends kind of place. The mermaids were really fun. So, please go check it out while in town. Be warned it is in a very dark divey bar part of a hotel and does not scream tropical tiki bar as suggested online. It is dark and low frills. Also, bring cash so you can tip the mermaids!! The food was actually my biggest surprise here. I hadn't expected much, so I was thrilled to find a veggie burger on the menu. The burger was INCREDIBLE and came with a side of guacamole (extra bonus points). I ordered it with the sweet potato tater tots, which did not disappoint. We chatted and had a couple and drinks and ordered food, and people came and went. Cindy was great with everyone and provided great service and conversation. I think the mermaids are over hyped, but I was only there for the mermaids from 6:00-6:15. The mermaids were nice and sent bubble kisses to everyone, but the tricks were minimal and basic.
