Why did we wait so long? The decor insode is flush with blue and purple soft lighting and drapes, the waiters were very polite and straight on hand to help with your every need. The menu, well, we'd promised it was a quick bite but starters, mains sides and a forced down desert argued with that one (doggie bags for the left over mains were a life saver!). A range of unusual chefs specials suitable for both veggies and meat eaters alongside the standard brummie curry choices (dopiaza, rogan josh, tikka, bhuna etc...) meant we needed an extra 10 minutes to narrow it down from one of everything on the menu to what we actually wanted! As a sample menu example my choices consisted of: poppadums with mango chutney, mint yoghurt, lime pickle and tomato chilli mixed tikka starter for one Keema meatball curry with extra green chillies (just wow!) garlic pilau rice cheese and chilli naan and a pistachio kulfi to finish (only because we could, there was no room left at this point!) Cobra and Tiger beers were readily available alongside a small selection of spirits. A repeat trip may well be needed to sample the mango lassi here (I'm sure there will be no complaints if the rest of the experience is as good as this vist was)

I decided to go in with a friend when we were in the area and so we gave it a try. When we went in the staff greeted us warmly and were very polite. We took a few minutes to browse the menu and it had all the usual dishes that you would expect on there. They also serve specials dishes, but I stuck to a chicken korma. The prices are cheap here and so it is ideal for students or those who want to purchase a curry without breaking the bank! When we finally got round to eating our food back at home we were impressed. It was tasty and very flavourful. I would recommend this place if you are in the area and in need of a curry!

Unlike many Indian takeaways that go for big, flashy store front facades in order to draw the customers in, it's fair to say that Sam's is the other end of the spectrum, being very small and unassuming (it looks very reminiscent of a conservatory). Some may prefer somewhere that seeks to really draw you in with its appearance, however the basic style of Sam's was what drew me to it in the first place, as I assumed they were willing to let their food do the talking and win them custom rather than gimmicks that, after all, don't have any bearing on the quality of the food. The prices are extremely good - with mains ranging from £4.25 to £7.50 - and there's even greater value to be found in the specials (try Sam's Special Balti - one of the best curries I've ever had for just £5.95). The food is too die for, it has a fairly typical Indian menu but some amazing Bangladeshi dishes and chef's specials. The chef will also make bespoke dishes to your requirements if requested. The prices are also amazing, you can get a 4 course meal for 2 for about 35 quid. The staff are friendly and helpful and will bend over backwards to make your visit to the outskirts of Brum worth it. The interior is modern and bright, although the toilets are a little dark. For group booking I would recommend phoning ahead and booking a table, but for groups of less than 5 you can just rock up and normally get seated straight away (unless it's a Friday). Thania Spice isn't licensed, so bring your own alcohol, it does serve soft drinks and coffee. The only reason I've given it 4 stars not 5 is because there is no disabled access, the restaurant is on the first floor above a shop. My top tip: On Tuesday and Thursday, you can get a 4 courses (popadoms, starter, main, rice/naan, coffee) for 8quid!! Bargain!

For my main I had chicken & kheema madras with pilau rice, with a buttered chapatti. Again everything was freshly prepared and the portions were generous. It would be wise to book in advance over the weekend as it's a cosy licenced restaurant, has a car park & you can bring your own booze. Overall it's a great Indian restaurant that's welcoming with freshly prepared food and reasonably priced.
