I've been going to see him since the eighties when it was just Ernesto and a solo chair operation. Business started to boom and I guess they couldn't sharpen the scissors fast enough, so on came the Gary expansion of about '88, prompting for the first time the most vexing of decisions: do you accept Gary's warm invitation for a trim should his chair open up first, or whip up some diplomatic and tactful message about wanting to wait for Ernesto while hoping not to offend Gary. Sort of a 'it's not you it's me' thing. Like Ron Woods in the Rolling Stones, ol Gary arrived late but with about 30yrs of clipping under his belt, has evolved into a solid member of the group. He's cut my hair several times over the years but I still tend to wait for Ernesto. These days there's a third chair with a younger barber behind it, a very nice guy named Tri who doesn't mind at all when I give him a polite head shake + nod combo, the instantly recognized & understood gesture to simply say, no thanks...I'm waiting for The Man himself. No matter what the best part of any cut from Ernesto's is at the end of the process, you'll get the warm foam treatment on the back of your neck + straight razor to get the hairline perfectly 'high & tight'. There's nothing like it. $16 for the cut, and if you try to slap down more than $20 Ernesto sort pleads with you that it's ok and you don't need to leave so much. He's the type of sweet sincere man you like to hug.....which I often do.

This place is perfect (minus the somewhat limited hours). They have three barbers working most of the time, and even on a Saturday, the wait is never more than about 15 minutes. Ernesto gives me my favorite cut, but all three barbers are top notch. The best part, it is only $16 (including tax). It is cash only, so make sure to bring some extra money for a tip. Parking can be a little bit dificult in the Glebe. I'd walk if you can. If not, try to pair your hair cut with your grocery shopping at Whole Foods and they will validate for you.

The shop is really classy. Exposed brick walls, a super cool ceiling, great barber seats, and a huge tv to watch when you're waiting or in the chair. The staff are great, there's always someone there to greet you at the front desk when you walk in, or to pick up the phone when you need to make an apt. You can also reserve online. My go to barbers are Brandon and Farhan, they're both great! They don't rush, are killer at fades, and shape great beards as well. What's nice about them and the other barbers too is that they actually talk to you while cutting, about lots of different things, which is nice. There's a great social atmosphere here, and everyone is super friendly. I've had a few different styles of cuts here, and they cater to whatever you want, and give good suggestions of trends in men's hairstyles. The prices are fair. In the men's barber market, it seems that $30 is standard for a good cut, plus $5 for a beard, and with tip it comes to about $40. If you get this once every 4-6 weeks, I find that it's affordable. One big plus is that they accept credit, debit, and cash, as opposed to cash only, like some barber shops. The only issue I've had here is sometimes, even with a reservation, someone will sneak in ahead of you without an apt. It hasn't happened the last few times, but the rare time it does happen, it messes up your entire schedule. Like I said, incidences of this have been decreasing, so they're definitely cracking down on it. I've been going here for about a year now (they're celebrating their one year anniversary this upcoming weekend, congrats!), and I am going to continue hitting them up. You'll need to checkin online early in the morning to get an appointment, especially on weekends. We visited on a Sunday. I checked in online at 10am (when they open) and got a call back within 15 minutes, letting us know our appointment was at 11:30. By 11:30 all their appointment slots were full for the day. All barbers have been great and take the time to listen to what you want. They are great with kids! Many of the chairs have a tv in the mirror, which my kids love. The waiting area is also great for parents or siblings who have to wait. They have free coffee or Soda, video games, fooseball, iPads, tvs and comfy chairs. The prices are reasonable and they take the time at the end to make sure they got everything right! They also have a lot of nice mens hair products to choose from.
