A really beautiful carousel with 2 fun features - the tokens are all stamped with a different animal from the carousel AND you can purchase a passport in the gift shop to keep track of all of the figures that you've ridden. So cool! The architecture of the building is also amazing - it looks like enormous popsicle sticks all the way up. The only detractor was one religious panel on the top of the carousel, which felt out of place for such a public space.

Such a cute little stop on your way back to the beach! I love the history it has about the beach and how they have some of the original horses that used to be in the original Carousel.

The gift shop inside the building is called "The Brass Ring Gift Shop"

A fun place for children and adults alike. The carousel animals are adorable, the treats available are basic but good and the gift shop is the cutest. I enjoy coming here with my best friend and nephew, who loves riding the carousel and never wants to leave. My favorite animal on the carousel has the be the giraffe. The staff is fun and attentive, I really like the announcer guy for the carousel, Larry. He is very nice and has been working here for a decent amount of time. I will definitely be back.

We stopped by the Carousel early and we're met by Ken the operator and he walked us through the history for the carousel and even the history of the Rooster. It made for such a wonderful experience, Ken is truly passionate about Carousels and it shows!

We had our wedding reception at the Shadowland Ballroom and rented the carousel for one hour during the event. It was FANTASTIC! The staff is great to work with and were excellent communicators leading up to the event. We had 150 guests (all older than 21) and the carousel was a hit. We did our rental from 8:00-9:00pm, so right after we finished dinner at 6:45, we did the first dance, mother / son, father / daughter dances, and went straight out to the carousel to do our professional photos before opening it up to guests. I liked that timeline because guests could get a drink or two in them first before enjoying the ride. Photos on the carousel did take longer than I expected, so the full hour was pretty necessary. If you're debating whether or not to book the carousel for your event, I recommend you go ahead and do so. It's super fun! And as a bonus they give you 60 free ride tokens at the end. We're including them in our thank you cards! Ben Pancoast was our photographer and did an INCREDIBLE job!! Out kids love this place! This is probably the nicest carousel I have ever seen. Beware though-- it is fast!

Talk about charming! St. Joseph truly is the Riviera of the Midwest. Old fashioned town full of quaint shops and restaurants, but the gem is the hand carved carousel set inside a fabulous building brimming with artifacts from long ago carnivals. Look outside and see a super clean white sand beach, and a long pier where you can walk out to a beautiful lighthouse, and just an all around fabulous place to be. As much as we enjoyed it all, we couldn't have without all the volunteers who treat everyone like a special guest. The loveliest of all is BARB RADEWALD who so patiently explained everything we shouldn't miss. She grew up here and in my opinion should be named Ambassador of St. Joseph. She's amazing!

A must! Purchase a token and ride a carousel. All of the workers are so kind that it is a great experience. There are also a few train displays set up and for a quarter or a token (use a quarter, way cheaper than a token!) you can watch the display and learn the history of Silver Beach. The gift shop also offers a cute Christmas book about the Carousel.

The carasoul was amazing. Of course, we rode on it for my girls, but it was so worth the $3 per person cost. You can dress up in different hats while you ride and there is an assortment to ride on. The volunteers that run the place are so sweet and so much fun. I am so glad we brought our girls in here before heading home.

St. Joseph in general is a beautiful city. It is full of great restaurants, and many mom and pop shops. The carousel itself is history that's still present. The carousel is very well maintained, and reasonably priced. I love the vintage style music, and wonderful animals that show a big part of history for the community.

This place is so cool. Not only is the carousel full of the most beautiful and unique animals (did a praying mantis really just go by?), but seeing the historical photos and artifacts from the full amusement park that was here back in the day is fascinating. My recent visit here was made especially interesting because I was with my mom. She attended her prom in the original Shadowland Ballroom. I'm so jealous. Seeing it through her eyes really made the history of the place come that much more alive. What a treat it was visiting this place!

    Fun carousel and its indoors!

So great! The operator was wearing an old timey striped suit and the music was fun! Very clean, too. They sell concessions as well.

In the spring there is a wine & cheese walk that I am excited to attend this year and also a living mannequin display, both events being in March.  If it's still cold, the two indoor activities I mentioned before are open year around.  If it's warm, walking around downtown is a great activity. In the summer there are lots of events.  My favorites are the antiques on the bluff, farmers market, the artisan fair and chalk the block.  If none of the events strike your fancy, the beach is a wonderful place to go.  There are lots of ice cream shops around town and wonderful restaurants for a quick bite. In the fall I enjoy going downtown to trick-or-treat at the businesses with my nephew.  The air is usually still warm for a good walk through November.  Long story short, I shop in this city, work in this city, grew up in this city and went to school in this city.  I'll always love this city.

And if I'm being honest, Howard Park makes much more interesting use of its physical geography than Golden Gate Park does with that single playground, so the nod may go to Mayor Pete's hometown. It gives me so much hope that architects and landscape architects and engineers are still willing to build public areas that are both functional and physically attractive. The playground part of the park incorporates so many wonderful and unusual elements. Just when you think you can't be surprised again, you get surprised again. All of my nieces and nephews are older now, but I wish this place had existed in 2014 so that I could have brought their young selves to explore it in its entirety. So that's the playground. Like twelve stars out of five. The rest of the park is well maintained and laid out nicely. There are areas to picnic or just lounge and enjoy the weather in the summer. I know, I know, South Bend has bad weather for much of the year. But you know what? You could do a lot worse than coming to the nearby farmers market to pick something up for a late-breakfast/early-lunch picnic at Howard Park before a Notre Dame football game on a crisp autumn Saturday. Thanks, South Bend politicians and city employees, one-and-all. (I'd thank Mayor Pete, but I don't know whether he played any part in this project, and I'm still a little annoyed with him for having moved to Michigan--once you're elected mayor of somewhere, I feel like you should live there the rest of your life if you can.) Who says the Midwest can't have nice things?

    (154 reviews)

Back in July I went to De Zaanse Schans in the Netherlands and then in August I came here to…read moreWindmill Island Gardens - so I feel like I have a good way to compare the parks. The windmill is identical to what is in the Netherlands. The only difference between this windmill and the ones in the Netherlands is that each level of this windmill has different types of jobs that were done that relied on windmill power such as clog carving and flour milling. I feel like the people in costume don't really want to chat or start a discussion around the park except for one woman at the very top of the windmill who was giving out stickers and one doing the pipe organ demonstration - everyone else in costume were either chatting with each other or kind of zoned out. Outside of the windmill, there's not much to do - we watched the short informative film and the pipe organ demonstration, but that's it for activities. We were told that the park had horses in the pasture but we walked the entire park and all the paddocks were empty. There is a carousel for kids and there is a gift shop selling the exact same stuff as all of the gift shops in Amsterdam. Even though we were in Holland, Michigan, everything just says "Holland" on it - I even saw the exact clog magnet I purchased in Amsterdam for sale here! Even the paper shopping bags for small items are identical to what is available in the gift shops in Amsterdam. (The cheese is local though.) One that that was pretty cool was looking at this big miniature town that they have on display from the 1930's. If you have never been to Windmill Island Gardens, then you'll have no idea of the significance of the miniature town in Nicole Kidman's basement in the film "Holland" that she starred in. It is set in Holland Michigan and features many shots of this particular windmill. My husband and I watched it after we stumbled upon it after our visit and having been here was kind of cool while watching. Overall, I'd say you can do absolutely everything in 2 hours here, including walking the entire loop around the fields. It was fine but I'd definitely like more of the employees doing talks discussing Dutch culture, crafts, architecture, whatever. Visited: August 2025
