This is the second kiddo hockey tournament I had placed here. It is an amazing rink with two sets…read moreof ice: the main rink, and a practice rink. Upstairs is the regular arena where the Irish play NCAA games. Downstairs is access to the practice area. Games are held on both but championship tourney games are traditionally held in the main. If you are looking for food and snacks, there is a snack shop near the bottom arena and also a place to rent skates and/or request regular skate maintenance...I.e. skate sharpening, blade falls off, etc. Parking is pay through an app during weekdays but was free on weekends. Not expensive though. I recommend eating at Rohr's which is connected to the Morris Inn if you have time. It's a much better option than other restaurants and extremely close. Easy walk on a nice day; if it is cold, park outside the bookstore and walk in. And, I mean, the campus bookstore, not the other one near all the random restaurants. Have fun! Beautiful campus!

Today we attended yet another birthday party here for a daughters' classmate. Here are my…read moreobservations in update.. With the rearranging of the picnic tables, the small party space now seems to be a bit bigger. Upon arrival I was pleased to see it decorated per the parents decorations, so it would appear my last review was taken into account by letting future parties in a few minutes before to decorate. Staff was very polite & helpful. Again, not much has changed in leu of decor. Walls surrounding the skate floor look like they were painted by a toddler. I don't think it would cost the owner much to think of a more aesthetic alternative. Perhaps let artists from the local high school have at it? As for the food.. imagine my surprise when the parents didn't bring their own pizza & instead opted for a dozen 6" mini pizzas from the snack bar. I watched dumbfounded as the staff shuffled the pizzas between two microwaves. Every food item available seems to be nuked, there are no fryers that I see. I ordered my son some mozza stix, they had a really strange taste.. I hope they're not expired or bad. I'll update my review should we get sick later. All in all, the kids had a good time. I think with a few more improvements, this place could be great!

It was a decent rural drive, through small towns and blueberry and apple farms, and when we first saw the arena from the outside, it was a mix of awe and curiosity. My son thought it looked shady (in a bad way), nested in the middle of local homes and businesses. I didn't know what to expect, so when I saw this outdoor rink (ODR) had a roof and an attached building, I was optimistic. I thought the kids would have to dress in the trunks of their cars and waddle through snow to get to the rink. I was pleasantly surprised at the level of sophistication. There's a lobby with a heater inside, so I watched the game from there at first. Many of the parents did, given that it was about 7 degrees F, with 30mph winds. Later in the 1st period I noticed there were parents in the outdoor stands. I found out that there were overhead heaters there and it provided just enough warmth to keep me comfortable. I had to stand though, sitting in the stands you couldn't feel it as much. My son also told me the locker rooms were equipped with heaters, so at least for a little while, before warming up, the boys could get a little relief from the cold. Overall, I like the rink. It feels warm, nestled in the neighborhood and it offers regular public skating in addition to the games. It was a nice change from the standard barns we've been to in the Midwest. I highly recommend you take a visit!

The rink we were on was chilly, plus it was freezing outside, but there were some overhead heaters that really helped keep in comfortable. The ice was not good here, even after the Zamboni cleaned it up. There were a lot of gashes and divots that caused some stumbling. We won the game, so the rink wasn't a factor, but I wish there was better parking and better eats. I'm sure this place will be up to par after construction, so don't take my rating as final.

SK8 World Is Awesome!…read more I had planned to spend my Friday night watching a few episodes of True Detective while enjoying the last of my stash of small batch Guatemalan coffee, but alas, it was not to be. I was pulling into the parking lot of the Applebees's in Munster, Indiana when my wife asked me if I wanted to check out a new skating rink in Portage, Indiana. I didn't! In an attempt to sweeten the pot, she told me that SK8 World's Facebook page was boasting that Tim "Spinnin" Shommer would be onsight to perform, as it was opening night. This accomplished nothing because I had no idea who Tim "Spinnin" Shommer was. Listen, it's not an indictment on Tim or his talent but instead, a glowing example of how out of touch I am with the rolling ring industry "D.J. Elite." So back at Applebee's in Munster, I'm trying to satisfy my hunger with a protein-rich, carb conscious, 8oz sirloin smothered in parmesan and decorated with a fistful of shrimp. It also came with a cup of garlic mash and more than generous serving of steamed broccoli. The garlic mash was on point (5 stars) but the broccoli would only act as to color my otherwise sepia-toned meal. My wife was across the table being silent, allowing my six-year-old daughter to do all the convincing. She knew what she was doing. In fact, they both know their respective roles, both independent and collective. My wife planted a seed in our daughter's brain when she initially presented the idea, and it was now in full bloom. They both had SK8 World in their sights and knew exactly what they needed to do to get there. My wife, with her "I guess we can just sit at home and rot, again" attitude and my daughter presenting the puppy dogs eyes she's obviously perfected. An hour later, I'm 20 miles east of Applebee's, east of my coffee, and east of season one of True Detective. I'm standing in a long line outside of SK8 World, waiting impatiently for this experience to both begin and end. I'll admit it, I was dug in. I was not gonna have fun if it killed me. While I saulked, an employee who exited the building inviting anyone in possession of their own shoes (He's talking about skates) to cut to the front of the line, so they could pay their admission to roll. He did this every five minutes or so. We had only had our tennis shoes so we weren't going anywhere fast. Us line waiters were also being told that SK8 World had run out of skates and that we could pay to get in but might not have the opportunity to skate. We would have to wait until someone who had rented skates in ou desired size had their fill for the night if we wanted to have a go. Luckily, we were able to procure a tiny pair for our daughter and one for the wife, as soon as we got inside. They were happy, which made me happy. I was also happy, happy to be left alone to hold their coats and shoes and have absolutely zero fun. But eventually, something changed, After watching my wife and daughter go around a time or two, I couldn't deny that I longed for my chance. I couldn't tell my wife I wanted to skate, I had my pride. I had committed to my anger and I didn't want to let it go. Then I devised the perfect plan. It was totally obvious that my wife was not a graceful skater and that she was having difficulty maneuvering around the floor with our daughter. So after they struggled for a couple of laps I proposed to my wife that she take a break and that I escort my daughter around the rink a few times. She didn't agree or brag that "she told me so," she just grabbed me some skates. Truth be told she just wanted to get me into some skates so she and I could skate together. She's smarter than me, what can I say. The minute my skates hit the floor I was transported back to 1987. The music, the lights, and ambiance. Tim Shommer was on his game. It was like he had been cryogenically frozen in time, only to have been thawed out for this event. Every song choice perfect, ever light transition, precision. I did shuffle around the rink a few times with my little girl, but that's not where the magic happened. It was when I flew solo. I raced, I spun, I twisted, and I twirled. I skated backward like most people dream of skating forward. I soared like an eagle. My wife also got her couples skate. Everybody won. The price was right, the bathrooms were clean, and it had a great family-friendly atmosphere. I just want to know which night is 80's punk rock night. I, well I mean WE, will definitely be back. Upon entering the park, one will notice how this garden sends off quite a different "vibe" than western-style gardens do. Typical of Japanese design, it was thought out quite a bit, and there is a reason behind every little detail within. Every changing month seems to bring its own charm to the park. An excellent park to go to for feeling closer to both God and nature. This has got to be the loveliest acre of land in Mishawaka.

This park celebrates the sister city status of Mishawaka and Shiojiri, a city in Nagano, Japan…read more Niwa is Japanese for garden and this park takes on many of the characteristics of a Japanese Garden. Some of those characteristics include: Water - renewal and calm Stone - longevity and forces of nature Yukimi-gata Lantern (a snow lantern) Bridges The park has all these but the water/pond which would ideally contain fish /koi. Of course, the weather here would necessitate wintering of the fish elsewhere, so it is probably a cost management issue. The park is well kept and is filled with plants, small trees, and gardens. There is also a bronze sculpture to the right of the entrance that commemorates the relationship between the two cities. Review #3099
