Unnecessary procedures and the reservation system does not understand "No". Staff was nice but possibly understaffed; did not answer phone calls or return calls

8/3/21 Call
Kurt C.

Dr. Silva A. Arejian is unprofessional & hung up the phone on me twice for no apparent reason. Tuesday (8/3/21) @ 9:21 am (6-min call) - First called to get info on their teeth whitening services as I have no prior knowledge/experience. Was told teeth whitening would be $299 for the Zoom service & that it'd be a 1-hour service. Person I spoke w/ recommend I get a cleaning first. I already used up my Dental insurance allowance for the year, so I asked how much was cleaning w/o insurance which they said $123. They asked about scheduling and I said I need to think about it as the purpose of my call was to get info. I thanked the person & said I will think on this. Wednesday (8/4/21) - The next day I contacted my main dental office (in DTLA) to ask about their dental whitening service which they gave me 3 options but said Zoom was the most popular. They said the Zoom service is $750 & that it'd be a 2-2.5 hour service. I told them that I called another dental office in DTLA (Dr. Silva A Arejian) that quoted me $299 for Zoom & that it'd be a 1-hour service & was curious to understand why $750 and 2-2.5 hours. They said they couldn't speak to what the other dental office was doing & that I should call them to find out, but they explained that they've seen the Zoom service range from $500-$800. They explained that they put a gel like material on my teeth and the laser activates it and that it takes about 2-2.5 hours. So at this point, I'm confused since the price/time difference is so great. Wednesday (8/5/21) @ 3:19 pm (3-min call) - So I decided to call Dr. Silva A. Arejian's office to understand their pricing/service in detail since I was confused at the price/time difference & want to be an educated consumer. I actually called w/ the intent of getting educated enough & book my cleaning & Zoom service w/ Dr. Silva A. Arejian's office all in this one call. I just though there were different options for Zoom, similar to like a 60-min vs. 90-min massage. Unknowingly at the time, Dr. Silva A. Arejian answered the phone herself as her staff member was on her break. I mentioned that I called earlier in the week to ask about their Zoom service & that I was quoted $299 for a 1-hour service. I told her that I then contacted my main dental office & was quoted $750 for a 2-2.5 hour service & that I couldn't understand why the price was so different & wanted to understand what their Zoom service entailed. I understand Dr. Arejian isn't a salesperson, but when a person calls & says a competitor is that much more expensive, that is a sure sign of hooking them in & selling your services & getting that person as a customer. Instead, Dr. Arejian oddly took the approach of getting defensive & just said that I'd have to contact my dental office to ask about their services & that it might be a better option to go w/ them & then HUNG UP! Yes, I couldn't believe it. Mind you I'm having a good day & I'm not rude (I'm from Hawaii) over the phone to justify such behavior. It was obviously extremely unprofessional & rude, but I just thought it was a disgruntled employee that was having a bad day & no one else around to see this bad behavior. Like I said, I didn't know I was talking to the actual Dentist/Owner herself. If so, I wouldn't even have called back, but I did thinking I could just ask for a supervisor or the Dentist to get the info I needed & book my appointment. Wednesday (8/5/21) @ 3:23 pm (13-min call) - So I called back & Dr. Arejian answered (still didn't know I was speaking to her) & the first thing I said was "that was extremely rude to hang up on me like that". I asked why she hung up on me like that as it was uncalled for. Dr. Arejian said that she didn't know how to help me as she didn't know what the other dental office does & that I'd have to contact my dental office to understand their services. I explained that I already contacted my dental office to ask about their services & was calling to ask about your services. Dr. said she misunderstood, then went on to explain pricing & service, about teeth cleaning first, then when I was about to ask a f/u question, the Dr. said her staff is back & that I could schedule w/ her & just left me on hold for 30 secs. When the staff answered I asked who that person was since they were rude & the staff made it seem like she didn't know. I said I was about to ask a question which the staff said they could help, so I then reexplained my story. I got additional info the Dr. didn't mention. I had another question, then all of a sudden the Dr. answered, I asked who this was & this is when I found out it was Dr. Arejian the whole time. She said we were on the phone for 15-mins & she didn't understand what else I wanted & said am I going to book an appointment. I said we spent most of the time wasted cause she hung up & that I had further questions & I was intending to book an appointment. She said this isn't the right place for me & then HUNG UP again. Consumers have been warned.

Fake quote, I got two other opinions from acclaimed dentists and they said I had no cavities and it's impossible for a cavity to just vanish

She told me to call back for a follow up if it persisted. Once the numbness wore off, the bite was definitely wrong. The filling felt too flat on top and didn't line up with my upper molar. I went back on Feb 20 for an adjustment, but Hyeyoung Cho came into the room with a hostile attitude. She basically started interrogating me. It's hard enough to articulate a bite issue since you can only go by feel, but her intimidating vibe made it so much worse. I felt so uncomfortable in the chair that I eventually just said "it's okay now" purely so I could get out of there and escape the hostile environment. After stepping out, I gathered myself and went back inside to try and resolve the issue one more time. The dentist practically yelled at me. She dismissively told me that if I wanted to get it checked, I should just go see another dentist. I have never had a professional act this way. You'd expect basic respect, especially when you're seeking help for discomfort caused by the dentist's own procedure. Her behavior was incredibly rude, showed a total lack of professionalism, and she outright refused to provide standard follow up care.

You can read my review of the other place I went to, to compare my night and day difference of an experience. My experience began when I arrived here for a second opinion from another dentist that I went to the day before that I had a completely awful experience at. I was able to book an appointment, got sent instructions for parking and how to find the office and a nice confirmation. The process was so smooth compared to my last place. I also very much so appreciate the questionnaire they made me take where I could share my dental history and general feelings of the dentist. I think because of this the doctors definitely took note of my anxiety being in the office. Upon arrival I was checked in immediately and before I could even finish signing my papers I was already called into the room. Unheard of. I was here because I woke up to an extremely inflamed face that was causing toothache, nerve pinching, etc and I assumed it was from a tooth abscess (self diagnosed through google lol). Dr. Azy was the one who saw me, she was warm and patient while also acknowledging my concerns. If you looked at my face you could see right away something was wrong with how swollen I was. The dental assistant took my x-rays and then she began my examination immediately after. Unlike the other location I went to, she was very careful about how she probed my face and always checked in to see if I was ok or feeling pressure. She even acknowledged that she didn't want to do too much to cause me more pain and explained what she thought it might be and even explained to me how the medications I got prescribed by the previous doctor would help (I got zero explanations from the other place and was almost taking them blindly) I got sent out with follow up instructions and scheduled another check in visit. Even after my visit Dr. Azy called and texted me personally to check up on me. It was so thoughtful and kind and really made me feel like someone actually cared about what was happening to me. Eventually my swelling went down and things completely healed, I came back for my checkup and was able to schedule additional services with them that I was due for: a cleaning and some cavities. I was told I need a deep clean from the other office and here they told me I didn't, I was also quoted for 2 additional cavities at the other place and had less here. I didn't have dental insurance but learned that they have their own in house dental insurance and I chose to go that route just from the experience I had. To follow up I eventually went to my third appointment and was seen by Dr. Nasiry. I really wanted to be seen by Dr.Azy just bc of the comfort I had with her but Dr.Nasiry and team took amazing care of me. From the welcome, injections, procedure, etc everything was done with such grace and kindness. Halfway through the process she could tell I was getting a bit anxious and she paused to give me a break without me even asking. The dental assistant that assisted was also amazing. He really took the time to make sure I had everything I needed and thoroughly explained everything before which really helped with my anxiety. If you are looking for a dental office that truly cares and feels like a well oiled machine I would highly recommend this clinic. It is absolutely one of the best dental offices I've experienced and that's coming from someone who would avoid a dentist like a black plague if she could. I look forward to my next visits now knowing that I'm going to be taken care of and not dismissed just because of my anxiety. I 10/10 would recommend both Dr. Azy and Dr.Nasiry in a heartbeat!

While reclining in the dental chair, my blood pressure was checked for the first time. I was informed by Sammy, the dental technician?, that this is a new procedure as the practice continues to update its protocols. My blood pressure was taken twice using a CVS store-brand cuff placed over a thick sweater. During the first reading, my arm was positioned hanging down at my side with my arm bent on the dental bed. I was not asked to rest it at heart level, nor was I seated with my feet flat on the floor, as is standard practice in most medical settings. The second reading was taken in the same manner, again over my sweater and arm hanging down. I slightly adjusted my arm position myself during the second attempt. Both readings were elevated, and I was told that my dental cleaning could not proceed. And...that's ok. What I found concerning is that upon returning home, I checked my blood pressure using two different machines BEFORE taking my medication. I took my sweater off, sat upright, feet on floor, and arm by chest/heart level. While my readings were elevated, they were SIGNIFICANTLY lower than the measurements taken at the dental office. If blood pressure readings are being used to determine whether routine dental care can proceed, it is important that staff are properly trained in correct blood pressure measurement techniques. To clarify, I do have high blood pressure, and my physician and I manage it carefully. In addition, I had not yet taken my medication prior to the dental appointment. However, my at-home readings were nothing comparable to those taken at the dentist. Had my blood pressure truly been as high as indicated at the dentist, I would have sought immediate emergency care, especially given that I am pregnant and aware of the seriousness such readings would pose. I am grateful that I rechecked my blood pressure at home for peace of mind. I even called my doctor, went in to the doctor's office, showed my doctor the sweater, explained how it was done...and my doctor said it was done incorrectly! *For transparency, a prior positive post about this practice was made after being offered a discount for doing so. At this point, I believe it may be time to seek care elsewhere.

In the beginning I wanted Invisalign, because I was a college student back then and didn't want to spend my college years having braces on, but Dr. Nam convinced me to first get braces for about 6 months and then switch to Invisalign since the braces would be more effective in the beginning stages. I agreed, and thought 6 months wouldn't be too bad. However when the 6 month mark passed, and I asked him about switching to Invisalign, he said to me in Korean, "why are you so focused on your looks, you should be more focused on your studies..." umm excuse me?!! Long story short, I did not have a backbone back then and didn't want to argue with him (I'm Korean and talking back to someone older than you is extremely taboo), but that statement stuck with me for over a decade and I still can't believe he had the audacity to say that to me. I did not end up getting Invisalign and had braces during a good chunk of my college years because of him. Honestly it's one thing to convince me to get braces all together, and another to bait and switch what you say.. All and all, if you want someone to talk down on you and go back on their word, go to Dr. Nam. He also tried charging me like $700 for a retainer replacement when other dentists have provided them for free or half the price.

I recently moved to Downtown Los Angeles and decided to try a local dental office instead of continuing to drive to my longtime dentist in the Valley. I thought I found a trustworthy office, especially since the receptionist and doctor were Iranian like me, which made me feel more comfortable initially. Unfortunately, that trust was completely misplaced. From the beginning, the receptionist was oddly pushy and pressured me to come in the same day despite me clearly saying I had a long workday and was exhausted. Looking back, that should have been my first red flag. Before my appointment, I sent over my insurance card. At absolutely no point did anyone inform me that this doctor was OUT OF NETWORK. No warning. No transparency. Nothing. When I arrived, they immediately proceeded with scans and X-rays without clearly explaining costs or coverage. They provided with a false estimate for my review, no words again at all again the costs may change based off the fact that we are out of network. I was then pressured into an expensive "deep cleaning" after being told that if I didn't do it, I could potentially end up with severe health consequences, even cancer. Fear-based tactics in a dental office are completely unacceptable. I paid around $1,300 out of pocket that same day for the treatment they strongly pushed. Then, a month later, I received an additional surprise bill for over $600 because, surprise, the office was out of network and many services were not covered. What made this even worse was the complete lack of professionalism afterward. When I tried contacting the office to discuss the billing discrepancy, my calls were ignored. I specifically asked to speak with the receptionist who handled my intake and insurance information, and I was repeatedly told she was "busy" and that she would call me back. She never did. Instead, I later received an email containing a completely different explanation of the charges and why I supposedly owed an additional $600. The explanations were inconsistent, unclear, and did not align with what was communicated during my visit. The issue is not whether I can afford the bill. I can. The issue is the principle, the lack of transparency, and the unethical way this office conducts business. I have been to multiple dentists throughout my life and have NEVER experienced a situation where an office withheld out-of-network information after receiving my insurance in advance, while simultaneously pushing expensive procedures without full financial disclosure. Patients deserve honesty, transparency, and informed consent....not pressure, scare tactics, and surprise bills afterward.
