I have a sore head. It's not good but it's the price you pay for a great night out. Ruby Lounge…read moretotally exceeded expectations. Me, planning, making a decision is a rare thing. My suggestion was actually a hit. I did my indecisive alterego very proud. There are many quality club nights organised by the Lost and Found name and this was no exception. Dance off, being £1 entry, sold it for me. Doubles for £3, a range of sambucas £1.50? Messy. Dance off saw a battle between three major DJs, strangerways, good vibrations and juicy DJs playing a mix of Joy Division, The Temptations and Dr Dre. Amazing combination. Ruby Lounge is renown for it's quality club nights and live music. The venue is perfect, with an adequate dance floor, a stage to match and plenty of seating on a slightly raised level for a chill out. Another great Northern Quarter location that needs to become a regular thing for me.

I think this might be a strip club. In fact I'm pretty sure. Well, it wasn't when I was in the Ruby…read moreLounge last night for a Lost and Found gig which is why I felt comfortable to take my boyf in with me. The gig was billed as The Cribs Aftershow but it was basically just a gig- most of the spectators were either in one of the four bands, looked like they should be or were girl groupies who were way too impressed with themselves that they were getting backstage. The sofas and high backed armchairs in the main bar area were nice touches, there were a few mirror balls around too. Plus velvet curtains - hello, strip club? Then you turn to the grimy stage area with the big grill up between the bands and the crowd. That said, no one went past the pillar anyway. Too cool to stand right at the front. Alright drinks prices - get some of their cheap vodka mixers or flavoured sambucas otherwise you'll run out of money quickly. After the bands they had Gareth Brooks from Xfm DJIng but we didn't end up staying.

If you're looking for either a glam night out with the girls, or a night out with the guys checking…read moreout the glam girls then Mechu is the place to go. A firm favourite with the cities footballers and high earning business professionals, you can expect to see bottles of champagne all over the place. I'm 26 and the last time I went I felt quite overwhelmed with how many older men were in there. If you're looking for a wild drunken night with a younger crowd then this probably won't be for you unless you go on the student night which takes place on a Thursday. However if you prefer the idea of drinking with a more mature crowd in quality surroundings then it's definitely worth checking out on a Saturday night. Some of the cities best DJ's can be found playing so you'll be provided with the perfect soundtrack all night long.

Although it seems a bit perfunctory to diss Mechu for its VIP-style snobbery and expensive bar…read moreprices (after all, that's the point!), it has to be said that this is not for the likes of people like me who spent most of their formative clubbing days spilling snakebite over their converse in various dark and dingy indie discos. However, having attended the upmarket Mechu on a couple of occasions for work parties, I'm happy to report it's not without its pleasures. It's a swanky bar and relatively spacious, the music from the decent DJs supplying both a mix of dance and urban cuts. The booths are good if you're in a group, but make sure you have a stacked wallet. The thing that generally puts me off - and why I'm probably not the intended audience in the first place - is the 'footballers wives' vibe it gives off. I'm not into my footie, so I wouldn't recognise the much purported cameos from Villa FC players - however, there are lots of glam, slightly orange women 'coyly' approaching the blokes in smart threads at the bar and suddenly I'm humming the tune to that Amy Winehouse tune 'F### Me Pumps' as it could have been written about this place. If you've got the cash and you want to avoid the lower-rent version that is Rococo on Broad Street, then by all means splash that cash here. I'd rather lounge about in Island Bar, thanks.

The Zanzibar in Stafford is terrible. The entrance isnt at all welcoming, the paint is peeling off…read morethe MDF sign, theres gum all over the tiled floor, and now (because they dont have a proper smoking area) half of the front is sectioned off for people to come out and smoke. The inside is just as bad, the floor is dirty and sticky and everything looks old. I heard a few months ago that it was going to get refurbished but theres still no sign of that happening. The drinks are quite cheap, which is super, because there is no way you could stay in there unless if you got super drunk. I have had one or 2 good nights in there but that was due to the people I was with, not the venue of the party. It is the biggest club in Staffordbut size isnt everything.

Zanzibar is and has been the biggest nightclub in Stafford for a while. It has some competition,…read morenamely from Chicago Rock Cafe (Now Love2Love) just round the corner, but its sheer size compared to the town means that it won't go out of business anytime soon. However, this also means it doesn't have to spend grand amounts of money on décor either. The carpets are generally sticky along with bars and tables. But the clientèle don't care, and nor did I up to point. But trying to dance (I use the term dance loosely!) on a sticky floor where your feet don't move easily isn't very comfortable. Prices are very favourable with Friday Nights being a 99p special night with drinks at 99p. On Tuesdays, its Student night and drinks are weirdly more expensive at £1.25. Toilets have attendants and could do with a refit, but it isn't too bad for the lads. Zanzibar is going through a refit soon and changing its name to Escapade; which is probably to counter the refit and re-branding of Chicago Rock round the corner, its only real competition. This place isn't excellent, but it isn't somewhere to avoid like the plague either. Worth a try to make up your own mind, but I give it 3 stars.
