Maybe because it's like a loop where you can enter at one end and exit at the other. A person could walk the entire length of the park in 30 minutes (or less). There are lots of big shade trees for their many picnic tables. There's a pavilion for large parties (call the number on the display board to reserve) with a small, fenced in playground next to it for the youngsters. There's also a full sized basketball court. Importantly, not far from the entrance there's a block building with restrooms. It's located adjacent to the Herbert Hoover Dike which encircles Lake Okeechobee and was built in response to the great Miami Hurricane of 1926 and the Okeechobee Hurricane of 1928 which killed thousands of people when the Lake breached a small simple earthen dike. It was designed for the purpose of flood control, water conservation, prevention of saltwater intrusion, and preservation of fish and wildlife populations. For the engineers or mechanically inclined, you'll find some old retired pumps on display, that you may find interesting. I enjoyed my brief visit as it gave me a chance to get off my bike and stretch after a long ride. Next time I think I'll walk up onto the dike. Park hours are sunrise to sunset. Dogs must be on a leash. It's worthy of a stop.

It does have parking spaces next to the park. It has a small walking trail all around great for exercise. The view is nice if you walk it. I think it will probably take 10 minutes to complete the entire walking trail. The parked is well maintained. It has beautiful flowers planted all around. It has big beautiful trees and a good variety of plans too. This is one pretty park. I saw a really cute gazebo too. This place is perfect for an afternoon. I saw tennis courts next to the park. I don't know if they are part of the park or they just happen to be next door.

That is how the playground got its name of Sweetest Town Playground. The park was formerly known as Woodworks Park which opened in 1992. The original playground was built of wood which deteriorated over time and eventually had to be dismantled in the early 2000's. In 2013 the playground was rebuilt with help from U.S. Sugar Corp, and a number of other sponsors. I love all the uniquely Florida touches that were added to the playground like the orange tree and a scene from the Everglades, The playground has climbing structures, a boat, a truck, slides, and swings. The only thing missing right now is the children to enjoy it. Hopefully they will be back playing soon.

During the COVID lockdown, walking the trails became my favorite pastime. Especially as a pregnant woman looking for peace and fresh air, lol. Years later, those same trails are still a favorite activity for my son and me. More recently, I've taken up disc golf and was excited to find out the group I joined regularly plays at the Okeeheelee course. It's been such a fun and engaging experience! Just yesterday, I attended a picnic at one of the park's pavilions, and it was wonderful. The swings and playground next to the pavilion made it perfect for a family-friendly event. The space provided plenty of seating and shade, so everyone could enjoy themselves without being overwhelmed by the heat. There's still so much of this park I haven't explored yet, and I genuinely look forward to continuing to visit for years to come.

It was a magical Disney princess moment. This year deer were right at the entrance as we arrived for the 5k. There was one spot on the trail where my nose was amused by the scent in the air. Smelled like there were mint plants close by but I did not want to go rouge touching the flora and end up with a poison ivy story. We also spotted a rabbit on the trail. I always look forward to coming here to take a break from the city life and enjoying all of nature's beauty.

Local knowledge directed us to take Loop Road through the Miccosukee tribal lands to reach Big Cypress NP-Oasis Visitor Center. Note: Loop Road is only paved to about the Miccosukee Cultural & Visitor Center. Very interesting one hour route through virtually untouched Everglades with sporadic homesteads. We then arrived at Big Cypress in the afternoon. Staff was very helpful. To my surprise there are still Miccosukee/Seminole men that put on alligator handling shows for tourists. The canal that parallels the visitor (Rt 41 Tamiami Trail) is filled with alligators, fish, turtles, ahingas, egrets & herons. A worthwhile stop when travelling through the Everglades. The Hamrick Butterfly Garden opened on June 30 of 2020 and it is the most recent addition to the…read morefive block Flagler Park that runs along the center of Main Street. The garden was created through a partnership between Okeechobee Main Street, Waste Management, Inc and the University of Florida's Okeechobee Extension Office's Florida Yards and Neighborhood Program. The garden is designed in four sections with red, white, blue, and yellow butterfly attracting flowering plants. The low maintenance plants were chosen by the Florida Master Gardeners and volunteers from Riverwoods Nature Center. They are drought tolerant and designed to exist on rainfall and not need further watering. Park benches made from 100 percent recycled materials were then added to the garden. The garden was built with donations from local businesses and the city is also selling personalized bricks that will be installed in the walkway. Installed in the garden are 8 large artist designed butterflies and 2 smaller student butterflies that were painted by Okeechobee High School students with the Grand Oaks assisted living center residents. I love how the real butterflies attracted by the plants mingle in and out of the butterfly sculptures. I saw several Monarch Butterflies circling around. You can get food, coffee, or ice cream from one of the restaurants lining Park Street and enjoy it in this tranquil oasis of nature.

There was a port-a-potty close by and a real bathroom with showers about a 4 minute walk. Staff cleaned the restroom often and the port-a-potty was well maintained. We rented bikes. Castle like structures, obstacle course, swings and slides. I also love there's only one entrance to the playground, this is a huge plus since I'm usually with at least 3 kids (but 5-7 when we come here). There are shaded areas, water stations and restrooms. They also have pavilions you can use for free during the week or rent on the weekends for birthday parties.
